We have recently been successful in our submission for the Qld Governments $10,000 Get Going Grant! The Grant is specifically for “conducting come and try days, provide training and accreditation and purchase equipment to support sailing at Hollywell.” We have been working on this since September and have done a lot of homework and research and refinement on exactly what we need for our Sailing Academy. After leaving no stone unturned, we have decided on 3 more X3’s to handle the bulk of our Sailing Academy students. Just to give you an idea on numbers: we just put through 691 kids in February and March alone this year. We average 25.59 kids per class, and we do it on only 5 boats which are 13 years old and still going strong. Based on these figures we need at least another 3 boats to run these numbers. Problem was 3 boats cost more than the grant! This is where a big thank you comes in to the Ladies Associates Committee as well as the Powerboat Division for coming up with the shortfall! We are most grateful for your assistance!

Annabelle Davies (WA) and Thomas Cunich, two sailors competing in Italy in June, finished close behind. Eva Lorenz was awarded First Queensland Female Sailor, for the third year in a row. Later she will be competing with James in Japan at the Asian Cup. The weather was fairly light with conflicting tides. On the Saturday 8-10 knots, there was a strong tide and changes throughout the day; Sunday was averaging 15 knots, cloudy and cool. Once again the constantly changing tide was the main influence on the races. Overall, it was a very successful weekend that brought out the best in many of Queensland’s young sailors. Clubs.Once again we are very grateful to receive assistance from both The Rotary Club of Southport and the International Yachting Fellowship of Rotary Bryce Wilson (IYFR). Through the generosity of The Rotary Club of Sailability Gold Coast President Southport we have been able to purchase forty self- inflating life jackets which our sailors with disabilities find more comfortable than the bulky older type. With the assistance of IYFR we have acquired much needed shade and safety protection equipment. Sailability Gold Coast is most grateful for the continued support of Rotary. While the storm damage to the Hollywell pontoon has caused Sailability to revert to a reduced operation pending the availability of the new pontoon, planning is in place for an exciting programme once we are back in full operation. This program is aimed at involving sailors with disabilities who would like to learn to sail independently and or competitively with a progression on to SYCs programmes as the ultimate objective. Sailability continues to grow throughout Queensland with the recent opening of the ninth branch at Biloela, sailing on Lake Callide. Three more new branches “FREEDOM ON THE WATER REGARDLESS OF ABILITY” are expected to open in the near future at McKay, Photo caption: Allan Taylor, Grahame Werrell, Bryce Wilson Toowoomba, and Graceville on the Brisbane River. He might have been diminutive in stature, but Ian ‘There is absolutely no truth in the rumour that Matt ‘Stripey’ Grant walked tall in the sailing scene in Allen is considering a pre-race name change from Ichi Queensland. Ban (number one in Japanese language) to Ichi Bum In recent decades Stripey was best known as a in Aussie slang after the super scorched her yachting journalist who travelled the length of the bottom peaking at an anti-foul blistering boat speed coast reporting on sailing activities for newspapers, of 33 knots during last week’s race to the Gold Coast. magazines and radio. He was a man who had time for Fair winds Stripey. You will be missed – big time! everyone and every event. Rob Mundle His favourite annual race was the Brisbane to Gladstone, and had he been there for the start on Past Commodore Good Friday, March 29, this year it would have been Southport Yacht Club his 53rd year of involvement with the classic. Sadly though – and quite ironically – it was just a few hours after the start of this year’s race that Stripey passed away in Brisbane’s Greenslopes Private Hospital: the consequence of a heart attack following a major stroke four weeks earlier. He was 76. Making this loss even more poignant for his family and many friends was the fact that his death came just three weeks after his ‘Child Bride’ of 52 years standing, Marie, passed away following a long illness. In sport, Stripey had two loves – hockey and sailing. Had it not been for injuries he would almost certainly have been selected to the Australian Olympic hockey team for the 1956 Games in Melbourne. His passion for sailing started when, as an inquisitive eight-year-old, he was swept along by the excitement Ian ‘Stripey’ Grant and wife Marie of skiffs being prepared for racing on the banks of the Brisbane River at Bulimba. He was soon ‘adopted’ as a Photo credit to ‘Andrea Francolini’ ‘boatshed boy’, helping some of Queensland’s legends of skiff sailing by polishing the steel centreboard or ‘wooling’ spinnakers, balloon jibs and ringtails. Before long he found himself afloat, sailing as a bailer boy – shovelling water out of the bilge of the skiff as fast as it came in. He was bailer boy aboard Culex III when she won the Australian 18ft skiff title in 1949. Bob Miller, who later changed his name to Ben Lexcen and went on to design the 1983 America’s Cup winner, Australia II, was also a close sailing associate. 2013 / 14 That same year, 13-year-old Stripey pedalled his bicycle 40 kilometres across Brisbane just so he could sit on the end of the Woody Point jetty and share in AUSTRALIAN TITLES the excitement of the start of the inaugural Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race. Little did he realise that he was observing the start of an exciting new chapter in at Southport Yacht Club his life: the Gladstone race would become a passion, so much so that he was a crewmember aboard the famous Mouse of Malham when she won in 1960. 11 - 16 November 2013 His career as a journalist, which started with Queensland Newspapers in the early 1960s, saw him initially reporting on hockey, rugby league and sailing, but eventually he concentrated solely on sailing. He was a regular contributor to the Courier Mail and Sunday Mail. In 2002 Stripey’s contribution to the sport was well recognised when he took out Yachting Australia’s media award.
