The review also includes suggestions for further areas that should be designated within the scope of these two Directives. Although the two Directives have different objectives, the areas designated as sensitive or vulnerable are reviewed simultaneously because of the similarities in the designation process. The investigations will focus upon: • Checking that those waters that should be identified according to either Directive have been; • in the case of the Nitrates Directive, assessing whether vulnerable zones have been designated correctly and comprehensively. The identification of vulnerable zones and sensitive areas in relation to the Nitrates Directive and Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive is carried out according to both common and specific criteria, as these are specified in the two Directives. 1.1 THE URBAN WASTEWATER TREATMENT DIRECTIVE (91/271/EEC) The Directive concerns the collection, treatment and discharge of urban wastewater as well as biodegradable wastewater from certain industrial sectors. The designation of sensitive areas is required by the Directive since, depending on the sensitivity of the receptor, treatment of a different level is necessary prior to discharge.

    Doc. 12526 23 February 2011 The situation of the inhabitants of Rhodes and Kos with a Turkish cultural background Report 1 Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights Rapporteur: Mr Andreas GROSS, Switzerland, Socialist Group Summary The Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights notes that the inhabitants of Rhodes and Kos with a Turkish cultural background are generally well integrated into the multicultural societies of the two islands. It commends the Greek Government for its genuine commitment to maintaining and developing the islands’ cosmopolitan character. The islands’ multiculturalism is the fruit of their rich history, which includes four centuries of generally tolerant Ottoman Turk rule. The good understanding between the majority population and the different minority groups, including that with a Turkish cultural background, is an important asset for the economic prosperity of the islands. The committee notes that better knowledge of the Turkish language and culture would benefit not only the inhabitants with a Turkish cultural background, but also their neighbours. Other issues raised by the inhabitants concerned include the apparent lack of transparency and accountability of the administration of the Muslim religious foundations (vakfs), and the unclear status of the Muslim religious leadership on the islands.     Tectonic Map of the Hellenic Volcanic Arc and Trench (Dominey-Howes and Minos-Minopoulos

    Saturday, May 3rd Santorini, Greece Santorini is part of the Hellenic Volcanic Arc of the southern Aegean Sea (Greece). This arc is due to the subduction of the African plate beneath the Eurasian plate (Aegean subplate). The Hellenic Volcanic Arc extends about 500 kms., from the eastern coast of mainland Greece to western Turkey and is located approximately 250 kms. north of the trench. The Hellenic Volcanic Arc includes the volcanic islands of Aegina, Methana, Poros, Milos, Santorini, Kos, Yali and Nisyros. Milos, Santorini, Kos and Nisyros have been the most active recently. The rate of subduction is approximately 5 cm per year to the northeast at the Ionian, Pliny and Strabo trenches south of Crete. The Pliny and Strabo, to the east, are transpressional while the Ionian, to the west, is more compressional. Santorini rests on a basement of Mesozoic marbles and lower Tertiary phyllites and metasandstones (Druitt and Francaviglia, 1990) that experienced Alpine deformation. These basement rocks are similar to the adjacent Cycladic islands of Anaphe, Ios, and Amorgos. Santorini is a volcanic complex made up of several islands around a flooded caldera. The caldera is a composite structure, the result of multiple collapse events. Druitt and Francaviglia (1992) identified at least 12 major eruption events in the past 200,000 years. The caldera margin rises 400 meters above sea level and 400 meters below and is dissected by three channels. The islands of Thera, Therasia and Aspronisi contain volcanics that predate an 3600 BP (Late Minoan) eruption while the islands of Palaea and Nea Kameni contain dacitic lava that were extruded after this Late Bronze Age eruption.

Οι πηγές Αντικείμενο της έρευνας μου στο πλαίσιο του προγράμματος ΠΥΘΑΓΟ­ ΡΑΣ II, με θέμα «Ελληνικές Κοινότητες και Ευρωπαϊκός Κόσμος (13ος-19ος αι.). Μορφές αυτοδιοίκησης, κοινωνική οργάνωση, συγκρότηση ταυτοτή­ των», αποτέλεσε η ανασύνθεση της ιστορίας των αστικών συσσωματώσεων που συγκροτήθηκαν στις βενετοκρατούμενες περιοχές της Πάργας (15ος αιώνας), της Πρέβεζας και της Βόνιτσας (18ος αιώνας), μέσα από στοιχεία που συγκεντρώθηκαν από το Κρατικό Αρχείο της Βενετίας και τις βιβλιο­ θήκες της πόλης. Για την ανασύνθεση της ιστορίας της Κοινότητας της Πάργας κατ' αρχάς κρίθηκε σκόπιμο να μελετηθεί και να αποδελτιωθεί το έργο του Ludwig Salvator, Parga, die Seestadt im Epirus\ το οποίο εκδόθηκε στις αρχές του 20ού αιώνα. Στο έργο αυτό δημοσιεύεται αρχειακό υλικό, το οποίο απόκει­ ται κυρίως στο Αρχείο του νομού Κέρκυρας και μέχρι σήμερα έχει παραμεί­ νει ανεκμετάλλευτο. Επιπλέον, το γεγονός ότι δεν έχει σωθεί ο καταστατικός χάρτης της Κοινότητας κατέστησε αναγκαίο να μελετηθούν τα κείμενα των πρεσβειών, που η πόλη της Πάργας κατά καιρούς απέστειλε στην κεντρική βενετική διοίκηση, καθώς και στους ανώτερους βενετούς αξιωματούχους * Η παρούσα μελέτη υλοποιήθηκε στο πλαίσιο του υποέργου «Ελληνικές Κοινότητες και Ευρωπαϊκός Κόσμος (13ος-19ος αι.).
