VATICAN, April 28, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In an ancient practice, Catholics around the world are often reminded to pray "for the intentions of the Holy Father". Every month, the Pope releases prayer intentions (usually two) asking the Church to focus on specific needs.

One of the prayer intentions for the month of May, which were released today by the Vatican Information Service, asks the Church to pray for legal protection for life from conception till natural death.

"That in the mission countries those responsible for the public institutions may," said the official text, "with suitable laws, promote and defend human life from its conception to its natural termination."

In his short time as Pope, Benedict XVI has also requested the Catholics to pray with him for the other major cultural battle - that of the family. His general prayer intention for the month of November last year was: "That married people may imitate the example of conjugal holiness shown by so many couples in the ordinary conditions of life." GENERAL INTENTION: For Christians in the world: strengthened by the gifts of the Holy Spirit, may they build a world of peace and justice.

MISSIONARY INTENTION: For those responsible for public institutions in mission countries: may they adopt laws to protect human life from conception to natural end. ******************************************************************* New Canonical Pastor: Bishop Thomas Olmsted has decided to name Father James Wall as the new canonical Pastor of Mater Misericordiae Mission to replace Fr. Alonso Saenz, who has resigned the post and taken a leave of absence. The Pastor of Saint Augustine Parish will be Father Carlos Gomez, from St. Mary Parish in Chandler. He will begin his new office in mid- July.

Parish Pastoral Council: Canon 536 says that a parish pastoral council is to be established, in accordance with the judgment of the diocesan Bishop. On Saturday April 22 there was a meeting of several members of Mater Misericordiae Mission, asked by the Pastoral Administrator to begin the work of a Pastoral Council. Some of those present were selected as officers: Mr. Lee Cowles – Chairman; Mr. Joseph Bright – Vice chairman; Duane Schmidt – Secretary; John Brogley – Treasurer. Marsha Larson is also a voting member. More members can be added in the future, if there is a need. The Pastoral Council has an advisory role in the making of decisions that affect the life of the Mission community. If you have any concerns or suggestions please bring them to these members of the pastoral council. At a future date the meetings will be open to all those who wish to attend, and hopefully they can be held at St. Thomas Apostle.

If any of your information has changed (Address, Phone Number, or new family members) please fill out a new registration form and return it at your convenience. If you are new to Mater Misericordiae Mission and would like to register as a member of the Mission, please ask one of the Ushers to give you one of the registration forms. Once you have filled it out you could return it to us, or even just put it in the collection basket. You will begin to receive your contribution envelopes within 60 days by regular mail.

7:00am Mass at Saint Augustine Church: all the members of Mater Misericordiae Mission are reminded that there is a Traditional Latin Mass offered at 7:00am on Sunday (and Saturday) mornings at Saint Augustine Church: 3630 N. 71st Avenue. The Epistle and Gospel are read in Spanish followed by a sermon in Spanish and in English. On the second Sunday of each month the Mass is sung in Gregorian Chant. Although it may be further for some, others may find that it is more convenient to go to Mass earlier some times. You can use your same envelopes to assure that your contributions are added to your account.

Meeting in Lincoln: Father Fryar was absent from Phoenix from April 24 to April 27, in order to attend the Priest Meeting of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter. During that meeting nine Delegates were selected from the priests of the North American District. These Delegates will travel to Germany to represent this District at the General Chapter of the Fraternity that will take place between July 4th and July 20th .During this Chapter many important issues need to be discussed, and important decisions need to be made, and a new Superior General has to be chosen. These decisions will affect all the priests of the Fraternity and our Apostolates. In your kindness please pray for a good outcome to these meetings, and that God’s Will be fulfilled.

Modesty reminder: As the warmer weather comes upon us please remember the need and importance of dressing modestly, especially when we are in church, in the Presence of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament.

Here are some practical “helps.” Clothing composed of a transparent (i.e., “see-through”) material isn’t modest because of its obvious intent to expose various body parts needy of cover. Men and boys not only have a responsibility to dress modestly but they also are to encourage to whatever extent they can the women and girls of their acquaintance to dress modestly, even avoiding those who do not when they themselves are tempted to sin precisely because of that immodest clothing. But it must be admitted that the sight of unclothed (even partially) bodies of women and girls has generally inspired lust and desire more than the bodies of men and boys. Clothing that reveals the front and back of women and girls and highlights their breasts is reprehensible. Skirts that rise much above the knee, emphasizing the shape of the leg for that very purpose, are inappropriate. The human body is “God’s masterpiece in the visible world”; Jesus elevated the human body “to the rank of a temple and an instrument of the Holy Spirit, and as such must be respected.” God has made the human body beautiful. Immodest attire neither contributes to the promotion of the human person nor to the establishing of the Kingdom. The modesty practiced by Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the Saints is obtainable and necessary for us. Pope Pius XII declared: “It might be said that society speaks through the clothing it wears. Through its clothing it reveals its secret aspirations and uses it, at least in part, to build or destroy the future.” What the Holy Father said in 1957 is still pertinent: “ . . . no matter how broad and changeable the relative morals of styles may be, there is always an absolute norm to be kept after having heard the 3 admonition of conscience warning against approaching danger; must never be a proximate occasion of sin.” (Adapted from a booklet available inexpensively in multiple copies for easy distribution: Queenship Publishing Company, Goleta, California.) The Sacred Triduum Missal: For your convenience and benefit the Mater Misericordiae Mission purchased these books, so you could follow all the ceremonies of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. Unfortunately, many of them were not returned. If you came to any of those ceremonies please check at home or in your car to make sure you have not “stolen” any of these books. If you would like to purchase them you may do so at $4.00 each.
