Worried about England’s weak North Sea coast defenses and chased off by the aptly-named German gunboat Blitz, the two begin to suspect something sinister afoot. Under cover of thick fog, the pair navigate the treacherous sandbanks to discover a nefarious plot: hidden away on the island of Memmert they spy hundreds of German barges readied for the invasion of England and overhear invasion-scheming German officers. Davies, it turned out, had visited the East Frisian islands previously and had fallen in love with a beautiful German girl, Clara. It was then that he had started to suspect that her father, Dollmann, might be an English double agent and that something suspicious was brewing on the island. Discovered, Davies, Carruthers, Clara, and Dollmann escape, the disgraced Dollmann sacrificing himself to the rough seas on the way back to England where the plot is revealed to the Admiralty. Published in 1903, Riddle of the Sands was enormously popular in its time and remains a fascinating document of Edwardian Britain’s love-hate relation- ship with Imperial Germany: admired for its efficiency and industrial progress yet also feared as an economic and imperial rival. It also tapped into real invasion fears. Indeed, it was itself only barely a novel, based as it was on Childers’ own suspicions about Germany awakened by the Transvaal Crisis and then deepened while serving as an artillery driver during the Boer War.

Invaders evoke deep cultural anxieties and challenge our identities on both a personal and national level. This theme has been readily adopted by shooter video games, where players gleefully blast through hordes of foreign invaders, human or otherwise. Most of the scholarly attention given to video games has focused on attempting to find a correlation between video game violence and real world violence, while little attention has been given to the forms this violence takes. This thesis attempts to correct this deficiency by analyzing the theme of invasion in video games. Linking these games to earlier invasion narratives, such as George Tomkyns Chesney’s The Battle of Dorking (1871) and H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds (1898), I argue that the aliens in these narratives are linked to cultural anxieties concerning Otherness. Brought into a contemporary, post 9/11 setting, I argue that video games in series such as Halo and Call of Duty portray Muslim and Arab peoples as invading Others and play into conservative political rhetoric concerning the “War on Terror” that renders Otherness inhuman and an object of fear.

In Le Carré’s fiction, political betrayal usually goes parallel with personal betrayal and the clash of duty with individual conscience is a common theme. John le Carré is the author persona created by David Cornwell, a former officer of the British Secret Service who also served as an intelligence agent during the Cold War era. Although it is not a must to go back to the author’s life in literary criticism, in Le Carré’s case, it is his insider experience about the clandestine world that distinguishes him as a realistic author and gives his critically acclaimed novels their merit. The aim of this study is to do a close reading of three novels by John le Carré, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1974), Our Game (1995) and The Constant Gardener (2001), in order to examine the elements of paranoia and betrayal in the light of the historical and political atmosphere of their respective era.

The reason for its neglect may stem from the relative brevity of the Edwardian period stretching roughly from the turn of the last century to the beginning of WWI. Another reason might be that the geographies of Victorianism and Modernism cover the intervening years sufficiently to obviate the need for a geo-critical study of the era. This essay, therefore, explores the era’s geographical spaces through a number of subject-matters in an attempt to show the period’s genuine geography.
