COUNTY Shropshire Federation of Women’s Institutes NEWS 1919 TO 2019 April 2019 Clun WI Ditton Priors WI Eyton on the Weald Moors Hadnall WI Hinstock WI Kemberton WI Message from our Federation Chairman One of the most enjoyable aspects of the job of Federation Chairman is the opportunity to meet members. As I write this I am getting ready to travel to Denman College for our Federation weekend when Dot Henderson and I will be looking after eighty plus Shropshire members. There will be familiar faces but also members whose paths have not previously crossed with mine. I love hearing about their different experiences, how they joined WI in the first place, how their meetings differ from those of my own WI, which course they are following at Denman It is twenty years since I first visited Denman College. An invitation came from a neighbouring federation which had spare places on a weekend break. It came at an opportune time; my daughters would both have finished their exams. so I was no longer needed for tea and sympathy. I signed up not knowing another soul who was going and had a wonderful time. The learning was interesting and fun and having no household chores to do made me feel thoroughly pampered. I have been several times since then, mainly “working” rather than following a course for fun (all my training sessions to be an adviser took place there) but any visit to Denman is something to look forward to. If you have never been, do look out for news of our next federation visit. It is a great way to enjoy your first trip so start saving now, you will not regret it. Best Wishes Heather ‘Show the love’ campaign A huge thank you to all involved in our ‘show the love campaign’ from collecting milk bottles, to cutting and inking hearts and attaching them to our trees as well as to those who joined us at the train station. I would like to also thank Cindy Mason Morris, mayor of Wellington for all her hard work and Julie Cooper from Creative Collections by Jules and Co for keeping us warm on the day. It was lovely to have the community involvement this time and to be able to get feedback from the public. Show the love is a fabulous campaign to spread the word about climate change and its effects on our lives. We need to make changes for future generations NOW. I have just undertaken some WI climate ambassador training and hope to be able to share more information soon. In the meantime our display is still at Wellington train station if you want to go over and take a look before it’s too late.
