From the Desk of Father Mizzi-Gili th 8 Sunday in Ordinary Time March 3, 2019 Greetings to All! As I sat down last week to write my page for the bulletin, the passage about which I had written was from Mark’s Gospel and of the weekday and not last Sunday- apparently the 3 cups of coffee I had were not enough- lol (laughing out loud.) From last Sunday’s Gospel from Luke, we continue on in chapter in chapter 6 and in the sections on love of emeries and on judging others, we come up to the section of the tree and its fruits. As we journey on this path to holiness, we learn from last week and this week that, holiness is dependent upon unconditional love of our enemies. The central teaching of Christ’s ministry is commonly called the Golden Rule and is an extension of the Shema Prayer- Deuteronomy 6:4-9. HE calls for an unconditional love of enemies and persecutors and a selfless generosity to those who are in need. (Catechism 1789, 1970, 2510)” Where then is mercy if we show that love? Mercy is a path towards holiness. “Christ effectively defined mercy as the ultimate mark of holiness and commanded his faithful to reach out to others in that mercy according to the example of the Father, who is so merciful in forgiving us our own sins.
