    Brian Deese’s Policy Record Hurt The Most Vulnerable From 2008 - 2016, Brian Deese rose from a law student to a Presidential advisor on fiscal policy, climate change, and trade. Deese’s personal geniality and intelligence drove this rise — but a review of his policy positions reveals a history of backing wildly incorrect conventional wisdom convivial to the powers that be. We agree with the Action Center on Race and the Economy that Brian Deese should not ​ ​ be appointed to lead the National Economic Council, or indeed any other economic or regulatory policy position. He has a demonstrated track record of furthering dangerously concentrated private financial power, supporting anti-factual austerity policies, tolerating and abetting climate change, and generally refusing to stand up to powerful interests when the situation demands it. FINANCIAL STABILITY Deese is currently a public spokesman for BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager which has at least a 5 percent stake in more than 97.5 percent of the global S&P 500. Deese is especially involved with BlackRock’s efforts to “greenwash” its status as the world’s largest investor in fossil fuels — Deese claims these criticisms are unfair since “we [BlackRock] own the market across the spectrum,” including in green energy. This supposed defense of the firm points to the fact that BlackRock is, in fact, “the new money trust” in the words of the American Economic Liberties Project: a titanic financial monopoly that is too big to fail, too big to manage, and too big to exist. The Dodd-Frank Act, which regulated Too Big To Fail institutions through a new Financial Stability Oversight Council, was one of the Obama administration’s signature achievements.

The outbreak of the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, and the disease it causes, COVID-19, has been declared a public health emergency at both the national and international levels.1 Since late 2019, the virus has spread across the globe, sickened millions of people, and resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths.2 The virus has spread rapidly across meat processing plants, with over 115 facilities in nineteen states reporting outbreaks.3 At least 4,913 meat processing plant workers have contracted the virus and twenty have passed away from it.4 The CDC plays a critical role in gathering and analyzing data from factories, responding to requests for assistance from state and local authorities, and providing guidance for safety improvements. The NTSB makes safety recommendations to federal and state agencies, transportation providers, and manufacturers, which may or may not choose to implement them. In recent years, NTSB recommendations have helped build support for laws enacted to mandate positive train control systems, a safety technology now being installed on certain railroad lines; Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations to address airline pilot fatigue; state laws addressing distracted driving; federal safety standards for helicopter air ambulances; and crashworthiness standards for helicopter fuel systems, which are required under a new federal law. She graduated from University of Kent, and University College, London in 1977 and 1980 respectively. Her working experiences encompass the fields of culture, youth and sports and community development. She is also a former Commissioner for ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children. She is a leading proponent on the rights of women and children and other vulnerable groups and delivered various papers in areas covering Community Development and Women issues. It is an undeniable fact that in order to achieve real and lasting progress, women must be placed at the forefront of the socio-economic agenda. Empowering women is key towards a more sustainable and better quality of life for all. Our presence here today and our achievement to date is living testament of that fact. It is therefore a privilege and an honour for me to be among the contributors of such progress at the World Assembly for Women in Tokyo 2014. In the cockpit’s left-hand seat was an experienced Serbian captain, Vladimir (Vlatko) Vodopivec, who had no idea that this was to be his final flight. Shortly after departure, a passenger, seated in a window seat in the sixteenth row, detonated, either knowingly or unwittingly, the improvised explosive device concealed within the laptop computer he had brought on board – one given to him, after the screening checkpoint, by airport-based employees. The blast ripped a hole in the Airbus’ fuselage and sucked Abdullahi Abdisalam Borleh out of the aircraft. But the explosion had taken place at relatively low altitude and Captain Vodopivec was able to maintain control of the aircraft and return to, and safely land in, the Somali capital. On the anniversary of the attack, Philip Baum travelled to Belgrade to meet with the heroic commander to hear his account of the Daallo Airlines bombing. PB: How long have you been flying?
