During the caregiver sessions, the people with dementia also enjoyed their own activity sessions where they played games, sang and did exercises. After the caregiver talk finished, the caregivers joined the patients and they socialized together. The feedback from the 84 questionnaires collected was overwhelmingly positive, with 90% of caregivers expressing satisfaction with the information and support provided by the Dementia Cafés and 93% of caregivers saying their caring stress had been lessened by the emotional support and experience of sharing with other caregivers. The AWA grant of HK$16,500 supported the refreshments for HKADA’s Dementia Cafés, which happened once per month in their Jean Wei Centre (Wan Chai) and Brain Health Centre (Kowloon). The HKADA hosted a total of 24 sessions — 12 in each center. They included a Christmas party and a Chinese New Year party, as well as sessions on topics such as caregivers’ stress and stress management; caring for people with advanced stage dementia; and the application of technology in daily caring. However, having the right mindset, skills and determination could be the precursor to a successful startup. Karena Belin, co-founder of Hong Kong-based WHub (https://whub.io/), a platform for the startup community, has advice for those looking to launch their own business. “Become comfortable with the uncomfortable” is Karena’s mantra, and rightfully so. Implicit in the idea of a startup is the premise of forgoing stability in order to follow your passion and make an impact.
