Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal. -

Captain Marvel Jr. #4, (Feb. 19, 1943). Inset bottom is Raboy’s first and his kid sidekick Bucky. It was during the fall of 1941 that Herron came cover for Fawcett and the first of the CMJr origin trilogy, Master Comics #21 (Dec. 1941). Below up with the idea of a new addition to the Fawcett family. With Captain is a vignette derived from Raboy’s cover art for Captain Marvel Jr. #26 (Jan. 1, 1945). Marvel sales increasing dramatically since his debut in February 1940, Fawcett management figured a teenage version of the “Big Red Cheese” would only increase their profits. Herron liked Raboy’s art very much, and wanted a more illustrative style for the new addition, as opposed to the C. C. Beck or Pete Costanza simplified approach on Captain Marvel. The new boy-hero was ably dubbed Captain Marvel Jr., and it was Mac Raboy who was given the job of visualizing him for the very first time. Jr.’s basic attire was blue, with a red cape. -

Committee on Evaluation of Comic Books Collection
Mss. 126 COMMITTEE ON EVALUATION OF COMIC BOOKS COLLECTION Scope and Content: The Committee on Evaluation of Comic Books donated the comic book collection in the Rare Books & Special Collections Department of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. It contains the founder, Reverend Jesse Murrell’s, correspondence, lists and articles regarding the Committee on Evaluation of Comic Books. This committee was founded in Cincinnati in 1948 shortly after Reverend Murrell preached a scathing sermon regarding comic books in May. Reverend Jesse Murrell of Covington, Kentucky organized the Committee. Another founding member was Ernest Miller, then the associate director, later becoming the director of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. The bulk of the collection consists of over 500 comic books from 1948 to 1966 that were evaluated by the committee. In 1950 the committee’s evaluation list was published in the February and October issues of Parents’ Magazine. It was published in this magazine every year from 1950 to 1959. From 1948 to 1960 the committee produced the evaluation list at least once a year, sometimes twice. On May 21, 1970, Mr. Miller was appointed the archivist of the Committee and all materials were housed at the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, Main Library. The Committee on the Evaluation of Comic Books continued to meet until 1979. “Our major purpose is to help the people formulate critical judgment as to the comics, then we try to help them buy and read selectively.” Reverend Murrell died in 1972; as did Mr. Miller. Such an analysis is favored by plaintiffs because it 6seemingly forecloses a conclusion that the newspaper strips were made at 7Detective Comics' instance and expense. 8Although each side frames the issue differently, both do so in a manner 9that limits the analysis of the work for hire issue to the artists and Detective 10 Comics. (Pls.' Opp. to Defs.' Sur-Reply at 6; Defs.' Reply at 9 n.8). However 11 tempting it is to follow suit, the Court cannot so easily unburden itself from 12 confronting the relevant evidence in the record and is instead tasked with 13 attempting to give legal meaning to that evidence. 14 In determining the significance of McClure's role, the Court does not write 15 on an empty slate. The significance from a copyright perspective of the terms in 16 these very agreements was previously litigated and adjudicated by the courts, a 17 fact which neither party brought to the Court's attention in their briefs, at oral 18 argument, or in the numerous unsolicited post-hearing briefs submitted. 19 In 1941, Detective Comics filed suit against Fawcett Publications, alleging 20 that Fawcett's comic book character Captain Marvel, a character who possessed 21 super strength and super speed, who wore a skin-tight costume with a cape, and 22 who hid his superhero identity by way of a radio-reporter alter ego, infringed the 23 copyright to Superman. -
