It is evident that Hayes and Bryant have had a significant affect on the young pair's coaching philosophies, because both N. C. State and Clemson depend heavily on the ground game, the trademarks of outstand- ing Alabama and Ohio State teamsoverthe last 20 seasons. Both N. C. State and Clemson have av- eraged over 230 yards per game on the ground to rank two-three in the conference rushing statistics. Clemson has run the ball on 84.0 percent of its plays this season, while N. C. State has given the ball to a running back on 81.6 percent of its plays. In looking at the teams' rosters it is easy to see why the "three-yards and a cloud of dust" philosophy is so prevalent among the teams' game plans. The Wolfpack have the most decorated offensive lineman in the Chuck McSwain Tracy Perry South and possibly the country in center Jim Ritcher.
