  • Exploring Canzone Napoletana and Southern Italian Migration Through Three Lenses
Exploring Canzone Napoletana and Southern Italian Migration Through Three Lenses John L. Vitale Preamble and Purpose As a first-generation Italian-Canadian, the southern Italian immigrant experience has figured centrally in my upbringing. I have vivid memories of the rich and vibrant conversations that transpired at the dinner table every day. There were countless tales of my parents’ childhood, which included living in impoverished conditions and surviving the devastation of the Second World War. Other common topics of conversation included crossing the Atlantic, being separated from family, and the daily struggles of immigrating to an English-speaking country. At the very core of these conversations, however, was music, particularly the form of popular song that emanated out of Naples in the 19th and 20th centuries, otherwise known as the canzone napoletana. These songs of love, laughter, sorrow, and pain—famous the world over— have always been a genuine and sincere portal into the heart, mind, and soul of the southern Italian immigrant experience in Canada. The purpose of this article is threefold. First, through a biographical lens, this article investigates my own personal experiences as a first-generation Italian-Canadian and explores how post-World War II southern Italian immigrants in Toronto, Canada used the canzone napoletana as a coping mechanism for the daily hardships and struggles of immigrant life. Second, through the lens of the Italian Diaspora, this article investigates how Neapolitan song became the metaphorical voice for the vast majority of southern Italian immigrants around the world. Lastly, through the lens of non-Italians, this article examines how the canzone napoletana influenced non-Italian perceptions about Italy on a global scale.

The Russo-Japanese War Origins and Implications Benjamin Mainardi The 1904-1905 Russo-Japanese War was the first major conflict of the twentieth century and a turning point in the balance of power in East Asia. In the short term, Russia’s defeat helped precipitate the 1905 Russian Revolution and the 1917 October Revolution. More broadly, the aftermath of the war informed Japan’s imperial ambitions in Manchuria—the early stages of World War II in Asia during the 1930s—and continuing Russo-Japanese enmity over Sakhalin Island and the Kuril Island chain. Studying this historical conflict in terms of international relations provides valuable insights into the nature of the conflict and how the past continues to shape modern geopolitics. As a case study, the war offers important lessons in the difficulties of sustained power projection and the exigencies involved in adaptable war planning. Equally important, Russia and Japan’s intractable imperial ambitions coupled with their failures to credibly communicate resolve serve as a cautionary tale on the consequences of inept diplomacy.

  • Foreshadowing the Reversal of Roe V. Wade: the United States Supreme Court and Cases Impacting Women’S Health
FORESHADOWING THE REVERSAL OF ROE V. WADE: THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT AND CASES IMPACTING WOMEN’S HEALTH FULTON WALD* This summer, the Supreme Court handed down decisions on June Medical Services LLC v. Russo1 and Little Sisters of the Poor Saints Peter and Paul Home v. Pennsylvania.2 Both of these cases addressed accessibility to women’s reproductive health within an increasingly conservative court. Although June Medical’s outcome was not as destructive as pro-choice advocates projected,3 Little Sisters indicated that June Medical may be the exception to SCOTUS’s favorable holdings on women’s health, not the rule.4 With a newly solidified 6-3 conservative majority following the confirmation of Justice Amy Coney Barrett, the Court is likely positioning itself to battle abortion rights in its next session.5 This Article discusses the future of abortion rights in the current Supreme Court, citing June Medical and Little Sisters as the two cases most indicative of similar upcoming decisions. After discussing the background of the cases, this post addresses their future implications and the worrying trends to which they point. I. June Medical Services LLC v. • Developing Models of Settlement for the Florida Gulf Coast
Chapter 12 Developing Models of Settlement for the Florida Gulf Coast MICHAEL RUSSO AND IRVY R. QUITMYER One puzzle with which archaeologists struggle is determining when people began to be less mobile and more sedentary. In many parts of the world seden- tism is linked to plant domestication. Residential sedentism without domestic plants is less frequently reported. However, Calusa communities on the south- western Gulf coast of Florida in the 16th century A.D. exhibited many features considered hallmarks of sedentary societies: permanent structures, storage facil- ities, large villages, and large-scale public works in the form of shell and earthen mounds. The Calusa political system maintained hegemony over the entire southern tip of the peninsula (Widmer 1988). Although the Calusa lived in per- manently-occupied villages, domesticated plants were not a significant food source (Scarry and Newsom 1992). Instead, Calusa economies were based on the bountiful, non-domesticated plants and animals of Florida’s coastal estuaries, marshes, and swamps. When did this tradition of sedentism in the absence of a domestic food base appear and how was it supported? This study elaborates upon evidence for early sedentism on the southwestern Gulf coast of Florida and reveals two distinct patterns of bay scallop (Argopecten irradians) collection. EVIDENCE FOR SEASON OF USE Traditional markers of sedentism present difficulties for interpreting archaeolog- ical sites in southwestern Florida (Figure 12-1). “Permanent structures” made of leaves and branches degraded quickly and subterranean storage pits were less 235 236 MICHAEL RUSSO AND IRVY R. • The Undue Burden Standard After June Medical Services V. Russo
1 The Undue Burden Standard after June Medical Services v. Russo The U.S Supreme Court decided June Medical Services v. Russo on June 29th, 2020, invalidating a Louisiana abortion restriction that would have shuttered most of the state’s remaining clinics. In doing so it preserved its landmark opinion from four years earlier that struck down an identical Texas law-at least for now. In the prior Texas case, Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt (“WWH”), a five-justice major- ity emphatically rejected restrictions that impose burdens on access to abortion that out- weigh benefits. Five justices inJune Medical Services (“JMS”) agreed that WWH controlled and rendered the Louisiana law unconstitutional, while one of them, Chief Justice Roberts, disagreed about the application of the legal test that courts should use to evaluate abortion restrictions going forward. In JMS, Justice Breyer wrote a four-justice plurality opinion striking down the Louisiana law while fully upholding WWH and its strong “undue burden” legal standard which considers a law’s lack of benefits alongside the burdens it imposed on abortion access. Chief Justice Roberts voted to strike down the law under stare decisis, since WWH had rejected an identi- cal Texas statute and he agreed it controlled the result. But he would have adopted an undue burden test that does not balance benefits against burdens and instead considers whether an abortion restriction has a legitimate purpose and is reasonably related to that goal as a threshold requirement, before consideration of the restriction’s burdens. In short: • Whole Woman’s Health requires a court to assess a law’s benefits, if any, along with its burdens; when burdens outweigh benefits the law is unconstitutional.

  • Charles Brigham Biography by David Russo
Charles Brigham biography by David Russo Charles Brigham was descended through his father from Thomas Brigham, who emigrated from England in 1634, and after a short stay in Watertown settled in present-day Sudbury, where he practiced civil engineering, a somewhat unusual profession at the time. Brigham was descended on the maternal side from Lieutenant Griffith Crafts, who settled in Roxbury in 1630. Charles Brigham, was born in Watertown, Massachusetts, on June 21, 1841, to a major Watertown lumber dealer, and lived in the Coolidge Tavern as a child, a Revolutionary War-era tavern where George Washington had slept and taken meals for a time. Brigham was educated in the Watertown schools and graduated at age 15 in 1856 in the first class of Watertown High School. Thereafter, Brigham spent another year at the high school, preparing to pass a college examination. Instead, however, he became an apprentice in the office of Calvin Ryder, a Boston architect. This experience continued for three years, and he then secured a position as draughtsman in the establishment of the well- known Gridley J.F. Bryant, a man of talent who left his mark upon the Boston architecture of his day, including the Charles Street Jail and the Old City Hall. Brigham, then, had no formal architectural education and his genius was therefore self-taught and self-learned. This apprenticeship was interrupted when the Civil War broke out and Brigham enlisted in 1862. He served as second sergeant in a company of the K Company of the Fifth Massachusetts Regiment commanded by Captain Crafts, who may very possibly have been a distant relative of his.

(Slip Opinion) OCTOBER TERM, 2019 1 Syllabus NOTE: Where it is feasible, a syllabus (headnote) will be released, as is being done in connection with this case, at the time the opinion is issued. The syllabus constitutes no part of the opinion of the Court but has been prepared by the Reporter of Decisions for the convenience of the reader. See United States v. Detroit Timber & Lumber Co., 200 U. S. 321, 337. SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES Syllabus JUNE MEDICAL SERVICES L. L. C. ET AL. v. RUSSO, INTERIM SECRETARY, LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HOSPITALS CERTIORARI TO THE UNITED STATES COURT OF APPEALS FOR THE FIFTH CIRCUIT No. 18–1323. Argued March 4, 2020—Decided June 29, 2020* Louisiana’s Act 620, which is almost word-for-word identical to the Texas “admitting privileges” law at issue in Whole Woman’s Health v. Heller- stedt, 579 U. S. ___, requires any doctor who performs abortions to hold “active admitting privileges at a hospital . located not further than thirty miles from the location at which the abortion is performed or induced,” and defines “active admitting privileges” as being “a member in good standing” of the hospital’s “medical staff . with the ability to admit a patient and to provide diagnostic and surgical services to such patient.” In these consolidated cases, five abortion clinics and four abortion providers challenged Act 620 before it was to take effect, alleging that it was unconstitutional because (among other things) it imposed an undue burden on the right of their patients to obtain an abortion.
