About This Guide

How is this guide organized? This section, “Getting Started,” contains all of the preparation information for the Connect Aveda: Hair Styling program, such as learning objectives, pre-work, required materials, and room set-up. Following this section is the “Training At A Glance” table. This table can serve as your overview reference, showing the module names, timings, and process descriptions for the entire program. Finally, the program itself is divided into modules, each of which is comprised of one or more lessons. A module is a self-contained portion of the program, usually lasting anywhere from 20 to 90 minutes, while a lesson is a shorter (typically 5-20 minute) topic area. Each module begins with a one-page summary showing the Purpose, Time, Process, and Materials for the module. Use these summary pages to get an overview of the module that follows.

About This Guide, continued

How is the text laid out in this guide? Every action in the program is described in this guide by a text block like this one, with a margin icon, a title line, and the actual text. The icons are designed to help catch your eye and draw quick attention to “what to do and how to do it.” For example, the icon to the left indicates that you, the instructor, say something next. The title line gives a brief description of what to do, and is followed by the actual script, instruction set, key points, etc. that are needed to complete the action. A complete list of the margin icons used in this guide is provided on the following page.

IMPORTANT NOTE You may also occasionally find important notes such as this one in the text of this guide. These shaded boxes provide particularly important information in an attention-getting format.

Page 65 Direct learners to the Connect Aveda Participant Workbook. Learning Objectives

SAY Our learning objectives for today are:

 Educate guests on the hair styling domain and its associated products

 Use the appropriate tools and service behaviors to discover guests’ hair styling needs

 Use the appropriate tools and service behaviors to provide appropriate solutions for guests’ hair styling needs

 Effectively perform the Signature Hair Styling Rituals and the complete Hair Care Experience

ACTIVITY: MAGAZINE HAIR STYLES

 Give the learner a culture or fashion magazine that includes images of a variety of people and hair styles.

 Instruct the learner to tear out as many images as they can that represent a variety of hair styles.

 Give the learner 2–3 minutes to tear out as many images as they can.

 Instruct the learner to describe, in their own words, the hair styles they chose. (Listen for: Smooth, curly, volumized, natural, glamorous, etc.)

Welcome and Introduction

SAY Every guest styles their hair differently—and many like to switch it up from day to day. Aveda has the hair styling systems needed to create any hair style, including the ones you chose from the magazine. Today’s training is all about using the tools available to discover and provide appropriate solutions for guests’ hair styling needs.

Page 12 Connect Aveda: Hair Styling

Hair Styling Product Knowledge and Service Tools

KEY POINTS The purpose of this lesson is to review the tools the learner can use to improve their hair styling product and service knowledge.

Slide 3

Give the learner copies of the Hair Styling Positioning Chart, Shelftalkers, End Benefit Cards, Product Resource Guide, Hair Care Consultation Tool and Purescription™ Pad.

SAY We already reviewed most of these tools earlier in the Connect Aveda training. You know that the Shelftalkers, End Benefit Cards and Product Resource Guide provide different degrees of product information; the Hair Care Consultation Tool helps you collect detailed information about the guest’s hair care needs; and the Purescription™ Pad helps you record product recommendations for guests to take home.

Hair Styling Product Knowledge and Service Tools

Slide 4

Direct the learner to the Hair Styling Positioning Chart.

SAY The only tool that should be somewhat new to you is the Hair Styling Positioning Chart. Let’s take a look at it now. The Hair Styling Positioning Chart is double-sided. One side lists Aveda’s hair styling products by step (prep, style, finish), product family and associated result and individual product benefit. The other side lists them according to their level of hold.

ASK What do you remember about hair care systems?

(Listen for: Hair care systems serve as the for any hair style; they should address the guest’s primary concern; they consist of a , conditioner and treatment product.)

Page 14 Connect Aveda: Hair Styling

Educator Guide Hair Styling

Hair Styling Product Knowledge and Service Tools

SAY Exactly. Before you can recommend any hair styling systems, you need to make sure you’ve addressed the guest’s hair care needs with the appropriate hair care system. As you learned in the last training module, a hair care system is the foundation for any hair style and should address the guest’s primary concern. Just like a great painting begins with a well-prepared canvas, great hair styles start with hair in superior condition. In this module, you will learn about Aveda™ hair styling products. These products also work best as part of a system. A complete system is like building a house. You could build one with just four walls and a roof, but it will look better with paint, shingles and attractive décor!

Slide 5

Page 65 Direct learners to the Connect Aveda Participant Workbook. Hair Styling System

© 2012 Page 15 Rev. Date 4/26/2012 Hair Styling Educator Guide

Hair Styling Product Knowledge and Service Tools

SAY Just like you learned in the last module, knowledge of hair texture and density will help you recommend the appropriate styling products. You’ll also need to know how the guest wants their hair to look when it’s styled. Some guests want to work with their natural texture, some don’t. To get the best styling results, guests should select a complete hair styling system, with a minimum of one product from each of the following categories:

 Prep – Protects and prepares hair for styling to build the foundation for a long-lasting style – Generally applied to towel-dried hair

 Style – Provides varying levels of hold that smooth , create volume, define curl or create hold – Applied to damp hair

 Finish – Provides varying levels of hold that create texture, add shine or hold with hair spray Therefore, a complete hair styling system consists of: 1. Prep 2. Style 3. Finish Aveda has a system that will help guests smooth frizz, create volume and define curl. Let’s look at these specific results, and then you will have a chance to explore individual styling products.

Slide 6

SAY For guests looking to achieve smooth, straight hair styles, Aveda recommends prepping the hair with Smooth Infusion™ Style-Prep Smoother™ to help protect hair from heat styling, smooth hair and defend against humidity. Style the hair with Smooth Infusion™ Glossing Straightener, which smooths and straightens hair. If the guest has more coarse hair, style the hair with Brilliant™ Universal Styling Creme to help define texture and seal in moisture on medium to coarse hair. Finish the style with either Light Elements™ Smoothing Fluid or Brilliant™ Emollient Finishing Gloss. The former creates body, natural shine and movement in fine hair; the latter conditions, smooths, adds high-gloss shine and makes combing easier for medium to coarse hair.

Hair Styling Product Knowledge and Service Tools

SAY For guests looking to create volume, Aveda recommends prepping the hair with Pure Abundance™ Style-Prep,™ which thickens hair, detangles and creates long-lasting volume. Style the hair with Volumizing Tonic™ and Phomollient™ Styling Foam. Volumizing Tonic™ creates targeted lift at the roots, and Phomollient™ Styling Foam creates weightless volume and body all throughout the hair. Finish the style with Pure Abundance™ Hair Potion, which thickens hair and adds matte texture and/or Pure Abundance™ Volumizing Hair Spray to provide a firm humidity-resistant hold.

Slide 8

Page 18 Connect Aveda: Hair Styling

Hair Styling Product Knowledge and Service Tools

SAY For guests looking to define their curl, Aveda recommends prepping the hair with Be Curly™ Style-Prep™ to define and maintain and curls while moisturizing and providing all-day frizz control. Style the hair with either Be Curly™ Curl Enhancer, which intensifies curls, combats frizz and boosts shine, or Be Curly™ Curl Controller, which smooths and elongates curls. Finish the hair with Be Curly™ Curl Enhancing Hair Spray to provide weightless, all-day hold while controlling frizz and defending against humidity.

Slide 9

SAY Aveda also has additional styling products that can be used with any system to provide additional hold. Like Aveda’s other styling products, these gels are intended to be used on wet hair. Recommend the appropriate product based on the guest’s hair texture and desired level of hold.

Slide 10

SAY Aveda also has several other finishing products that help create texture, add shine or hold with hair spray. Finishing products are intended to be used on dry hair. If a guest is looking to create texture in their final style, recommend the appropriate product based on their hair texture and desired level of hold and finish (i.e., shiny, matte, natural.)

Slide 11

Page 20 Connect Aveda: Hair Styling

Hair Styling Product Knowledge and Service Tools

SAY If a guest is looking to add shine to their final style, recommend the appropriate product based on their hair texture and desired result. Light Elements™ Smoothing Fluid is great for all hair types, but especially fine hair. Brilliant™ Spray-On Shine is great for all hair types, but especially medium to coarse hair. It provides shine, helps tame frizz and eliminates flyaways. Brilliant™ Emollient Finishing Gloss is designed for medium to coarse hair, as it smooths and delivers more shine and slip to the hair. Brilliant™ Humectant Pomade and Brilliant™ Anti- Humectant Pomade are best for coarse hair. The former activates, defines and enhances curls or wave with high shine, and the latter tames curls and waves, prevents frizziness and flyaways and gives a satiny finish.

Hair Styling Product Knowledge and Service Tools

SAY If a guest is looking to hold their final style with hair spray, recommend the appropriate product based on their desired level of hold and desired result.

ASK

 What does a hair styling system consists of?

(Listen for: A hair styling system includes at least one product from each styling category—prep, style, finish.)

 What prep products do? (Listen for: They protect and prepare hair for styling to build the foundation for a long-lasting style; they’re generally applied to towel-dried hair.)

 What style products do? (Listen for: They provide varying levels of hold that smooth frizz, create volume, define curl or create hold; they’re applied to damp hair.)

 What do finish products do? (Listen for: They provide varying levels of hold that create texture, add shine or hold with hair spray.)

Page 22 Connect Aveda: Hair Styling

Educator Guide Hair Styling

Hair Styling Product Knowledge and Service Tools

SAY Correct. A complete hair styling system consists of at least one product from each category. Depending on the guest’s desired style, they may need more than one. Often, complicated styles require several different products. Remember, you already learned how to use the other tools earlier in the Connect Aveda training, so we’re not going to review them again now. And just like the Hair Care Positioning Chart, the Hair Styling Positioning Chart is a valuable source of information when it comes to determining an appropriate hair styling system for a guest.

Hair Styling Product Knowledge and Service Tools

ACTIVITY: HAIR STYLING PRODUCT DISCOVERY

 Explain that the learner will use product testers to experience each prep, style and finish product.

 Instruct the learner to experience the products in the order they are listed in their workbook (i.e., prep, style, finish).

 Instruct the learner to apply a small amount of each product to the back of their hand (using disposable applicators if necessary) to experience the product’s texture and aroma and to take notes in their workbook.

 As the learner has experiences each product, instruct them to record the product’s associated benefit and to make note of any questions they may have.

 After the learner has experienced each product, answer their questions.

 When they are finished, use the Hair Styling Positioning Chart to check their answers, making sure to explain any inaccuracies.

Discover Needs

KEY POINTS The purpose of this lesson is to review the tools and service behaviors associated with discovering guests’ hair styling needs, including reinforcing how to use the Hair Care Consultation Tool.

Slide 13

Direct the learner to the Hair Care Consultation Tool.

SAY As you already learned, the best way to discover a guest’s hair styling needs is to use the Hair Care Consultation Tool to perform an effective consultation.

ASK Which Hair Care Consultation Tool questions do you think will provide the most information about a guest’s hair styling needs? (Listen for: How do you want your hair to look when it’s styled, do you use heat styling tools to help you achieve this style.)

© 2012 Page 25 Rev. Date 4/26/2012 Hair Styling Educator Guide

Discover Needs

SAY That’s right. Even if you know that a guest has come into the EC looking for a hair styling system, it’s important to ask them every question on the tool rather than jumping straight to the styling questions. In fact, it’s likely that the very first question on the Hair Care Consultation Tool will provide the most information about a guest’s hair styling needs.

ASK Can you please read the first question on the Hair Care Consultation Tool aloud? (Listen as the learner reads the first question: Tell me about your hair.)

SAY Thank you. “Tell me about your hair” is an open-ended question that allows the guest to respond freely. More than likely, the guest will describe their hair texture.

ASK Do you remember the three hair texture categories?

(Listen for: Fine, medium, coarse.)

SAY Correct. This is important information. Knowing the guest’s hair texture helps us determine how much hold it needs from styling products. Fine hair typically needs products with less hold; coarse hair typically needs products with more hold. Therefore, it’s not enough to know how the guest wants their hair to look when it’s styled. Knowing both the guest’s Page 26 Connect Aveda: Hair Styling

Educator Guide Hair Styling

Discover Needs

hair texture and their desired style will help you recommend the appropriate hair styling system. You already practiced determining hair texture earlier in the Connect Aveda training, but let’s do a quick hair texture practice to keep that skill fresh.

ACTIVITY: HAIR TEXTURE PRACTICE

 Invite a team member to join you and the learner.

 Instruct the learner to determine your hair texture.

 Instruct the learner to determine the team member’s hair texture.

 Allow the learner to reference their notes if necessary, and coach them as needed.

 Debrief the activity by giving the learner feedback on what they did well and what they could improve.

 Demonstrate the things you are asking the learner to do differently, and then have them practice the new behavior.

SAY Well done. Earlier in the Connect Aveda training, you practiced performing the instant and elite hair care consultations, including the elasticity and porosity tests and scalp analysis. We’re not going to practice them again now unless you feel you need it.

ASK Do you think you need to practice performing the instant and/or elite hair care consultation? (Accept any answer, and practice if necessary.)

© 2012 Page 27 Rev. Date 4/26/2012 Hair Styling Educator Guide

Discover Needs

SAY Let’s move on to providing hair styling solutions.

Page 28 Connect Aveda: Hair Styling

Educator Guide Hair Styling

Provide Solutions

KEY POINTS The purpose of this lesson is to review the tools and service behaviors associated with providing appropriate solutions for guests’ hair styling needs, including reinforcing how to use the solutions formula and Purescription Pad™ to make product recommendations and how to perform the complete Hair Care Experience.

Slide 14

SAY As you learned earlier in the Connect Aveda training, providing solutions involves suggesting, educating on and recording a system of three or more products. The solutions formula (“Because (guest challenge/need) I recommend (system) which will (results)”) is what you use to recommend product systems to guests. The Purescription™ Pad is what you use to record your recommendations. Now I’m going to give you an activity that ties both of these tools together.

Page 75 Direct learners to the Connect Aveda Participant Workbook. Hair Styling Needs and Solutions Formulas

© 2012 Page 29 Rev. Date 4/26/2012 Hair Styling Educator Guide

Provide Solutions

ACTIVITY: HAIR STYLING NEEDS AND SOLUTIONS FORMULAS

 Instruct the learner to choose three of their favorite hair styles they tore out of the magazine earlier in the training and to record the appropriate product system solutions for each style.

 Give the learner three blank Purescription™ Pads, and instruct them to record their recommendations.

 Instruct the learner to use the solutions formula to recommend their product system solutions as though you were each guest.

SAY Great job! So, we’ve already covered two of the provide solutions service behaviors:

 Suggest and educate on a system of three or more products.

 Provide a Purescription.™ We’re not going to review share a reason we’re different: mission, packaging, sourcing, etc., or introduce what’s new because you already learned about these service behaviors earlier in the Connect Aveda training.

ASK Do you know which provide solutions service behavior we have yet to discuss? (Listen for: Offer an Aveda Ritual of Renewal.)

Page 30 Connect Aveda: Hair Styling

Educator Guide Hair Styling

Provide Solutions

SAY With elite hair care guests, we perform either the Stress- Relieving Hand Ritual or Stress-Relieving Neck and Shoulders Ritual.

ASK The hair care consultation and the Ritual of Renewal are two of the three parts of the complete Hair Care Experience. Do you remember the third part? (Listen for: Signature Hair Styling Ritual.)

SAY That’s right. The complete Hair Care Experience consists of a hair care consultation, a Signature Hair Styling Ritual and a Ritual of Renewal. With instant guests, the Hair Care Experience may consist of a hair care consultation and either a quick application of the finishing product you’re recommending or a quick ritual. Let’s take a closer look at the Signature Hair Styling Rituals now.

Slide 15

Page 76–78 Direct learners to the Connect Aveda Participant Workbook. Signature Hair Styling Rituals

SAY The five Signature Hair Styling Rituals were created by Antoinette Beenders, Aveda’s Global Creative Director and a world-renowned hair stylist. The purpose of the rituals is to elevate a simple styling demonstration into something more transformational—to show the guest how the product can improve their style. The Signature Hair Styling Rituals do not include every Aveda styling product. If you recommend a styling product that isn’t part of one of five rituals, you should perform a quick application of whatever finishing product you’re recommending. The names of the Signature Hair Styling Rituals are:

 The Gloss

 The Lift

 The Puff

 The Tousle

 The Twist Let’s review each one in detail.

Page 32 Connect Aveda: Hair Styling

ACTIVITY: SIGNATURE HAIR STYLING RITUALS DEMONSTRATION AND PRACTICE

 Invite two or three team members to join you and the learner. Instruct the team members to play the role of the guests while you play the role of the advisor.

 Explain that you are going to demonstrate how to perform the Signature Hair Styling Rituals on one half of the team member’s head and that the learner will eventually have the opportunity to practice performing the rituals on the other half of the team member’s head.

 Explain each ritual in your own words before demonstrating. Instruct the learner to take notes in their workbook.

 The Gloss – Who Guests with medium to coarse, one-length (no layers), shoulder-length hair or longer who want shine – Tools • Brilliant™ Spray-On Shine • Uruku Bronzing Brush Note: For markets that don’t carry these supplies, Light Elements™ Smoothing Fluid may be used to perform this ritual. – Steps 1. Spray 3–4 pumps of the product onto the brush. 2. Take a small section of hair, and focusing primarily on the ends, use the brush to paint the product onto the hair, working from the ends up. 3. Take Action

KEY POINTS The purpose of this lesson is to give the learner further opportunities to observe and practice hair styling service behaviors, test the learner’s hair styling product knowledge and have the learner assess their skills and commit to developing their ability to discover and provide appropriate solutions for guests’ hair styling needs as they grow into their role as an advisor.

SAY Now it’s time to practice performing the service experience, from discover needs to provide solutions. Watch me as I demonstrate the complete Hair Care Experience. Afterward, you’ll have the opportunity to practice.

ACTIVITY: HAIR CARE EXPERIENCE DEMONSTRATION AND PRACTICE

 Invite a team member to join you and the learner. Instruct the team member to play the role of the guest while you play the role of the advisor.

 Create a hair styling role play scenario using the team member’s hair type as the context.

 Demonstrate the discover needs and provide solutions service behaviors, using any necessary hair styling product knowledge and service tools: – Ask a minimum of three open-ended questions to understand the guest’s needs. • Ask the learner the questions from the hair, scalp and style sections of the Hair Care Consultation Tool and record their responses. • Perform a time check by using the following language: “I’d like to further analyze your hair and scalp to better understand your needs. Are you

doing ok on time?” Note: The learner should say “yes.” • Perform the elasticity and porosity tests and scalp analysis and record the results. – Suggest and educate on a system of three or more products. • Review what you determined as their desired style and why. • Recommend a complete hair styling system (prep, style, finish) using the solutions formula. • Educate them on how to use each product in the system. • Perform the appropriate Signature Hair Styling Ritual. – Offer an Aveda Ritual of Renewal. • Perform the Stress-Relieving Hand Ritual or Stress- Relieving Neck and Shoulders Ritual. – Share a reason we’re different: mission, packaging, sourcing, etc. • Share an Aveda story and allow them to experience the product’s aroma. – Provide a Purescription.™ • Record your recommendations on a Purescription™ Pad. – Introduce what’s new. • Share the most current product or program focus or a product from a different domain.

 After the role play, discuss each service behavior with the learner and have them share their observations.

© 2012 Page 39 Rev. Date 4/26/2012 Hair Styling Educator Guide

Take Action

 Switch roles, and instruct the learner to play the role of the advisor while you play the role of the guest. Use your own hair type as the scenario.

 Allow the learner to reference their notes if necessary, and coach them as needed.

 Debrief the activity by giving the learner feedback on what they did well and what they could improve.

 Demonstrate the things you are asking the learner to do differently, and then have them practice the new behavior.

SAY Great job on the role play! We’ll continue to work on improving your hair styling product and service knowledge to make sure you feel fully confident in your ability to discover and provide appropriate solutions for guests’ hair styling needs. We’re nearing the end of the Hair Styling training. Now it’s time to test your knowledge.

ACTIVITY: HAIR STYLING PRODUCT SCAVENGER HUNT

 Explain that you are going to give the learner three different hair styling scenarios and that they must go around the EC and collect all the hair styling product testers that relate to the scenario. Remind the learner to refer to the Shelftalkers and End Benefit Cards if they need help. Note: Tell the learner that for this activity, they should collect all the products that relate to each scenario, which may include products from multiple product families.
