The Himalayan Club will hold the Annual Seminar on SaturdaySaturday,,,, 18th and Sunday, 19th February 20172017. It is open to all members and guests. Leading mountaineers, explorers and writers will be presenting audio visuals and illustrated talks on various topics.

4:00 PM INAUGURATION Pheroza J. Godrej

Dr. Pheroza J. Godrej, an art-historian, is a Ph.D. in Ancient Indian Culture. She is a member of the Board of Studies for the Department of Ancient Indian Culture of St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. She is the founder of Cymroza Art Gallery, which was established in 1971. She has written/ co-edited several publications and curated several highly-acclaimed exhibitions in leading National and International Museums.

She is a member of the Apex Committee of the National Gallery of Modern Art, and a former Chairperson of the Advisory Committee of the National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai. She is the Chairperson of the Museum Society of Bombay, and President Emeritus of the National Society of the Friends of the Trees. She is a trustee of the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum and Impact Foundation.

Dr. Godrej is the Chairperson of the Godrej Archives Council.

4:15 PM KAIVAN MISTRY MEMORIAL LECTURE Leo Houlding Reflections

In his talk Leo will reflect on some of the highs and lows of his life of vertical adventure. From his early days on the traditional climbs of his home region of the Lake District in the UK, to his initiation into the world of big wall climbing in Yosemite and onto some of the mightiest and most spectacular yet little known summits on Earth. Illustrated with jaw dropping photography and nail biting video clips shot and edited by some of the world's best adventure film makers, Leo assures he will introduce us to some places and some things we have never seen before. Arctic Canada and living on a freezing for two weeks, to questing through the Venezuelan jungle and terrifying encounters with tribal Shaman to reach the incredible Cerro Autana deep in the Amazon and onto the first ascent of the mile long N.E. ridge of Ulvetanna in Queens Maud Land, Antarctica - a peak Leo considers to be the most spectacular of Earth and one of his proudest achievements. Touched by tragedy as well as triumph Lep has packed a lifetime of extreme adventure into his 36 years and is sure to amaze and inspire!

5:15 PM JAGDISH NANAVATI AWARD CEREMONY

Jagdish C. Nanavati (1928-2011) was President Emeritus of the Himalayan Club, and an eminent personality who metuculously analysed many expeditions. He made it his mission to make Indian expeditions plan, study, execute and report the venture expertly. He was also keen on welfare of support staff and supported them in different ways. As a tribute to Jagdishbhai, the Himalayan Club and the Nanavati family have set up the Jagdish Nanavati Award for Excellence in Mountaineering and the Jagdish Nanavati Garud Medal for outstanding support staff.

The Himalayan Club in association with Naoroji and Godrej family and has set up a Mountain Literature Award for the best book on the Himalaya in memory of Kekoo Naoroji (1915-2003). Mr Naoroji had a long association with the Himalayan Club where he served as President and Secretary in the past. The KeKeKekooKe koo Naoroji Book Award for Himalayan Literature will be presented to for his book Up and About ––– The Hard Road to Everest .

6:30 PM DOUG SCOTT Up and About ––– The Hard Road to Everest ‘Why I am relucreluctanttant to write an Autobiography’

Doug will talk about his hesitation and what finally made him put pen to paper, that resulted in this award winning book. Hopefully he will read some excerpts from it.

NUNGSHI MALIK The NT Foundation for Outdoor Leadership and Girl Empowerment through Outdoors

Despite roots in one of India’s most conservative rural Haryana state notorious for its skewed sex ratio in favour of boys, Nungshi and Tashi Malik, by the young age of 23 years achieved several global gender iconic milestones. They are the world’s first siblings and twins as well as youngest persons and the first South Asians to complete the ‘Adventurers Grand Slam’ (scaling highest peaks in all continents including Everest, and skiing to North and South Poles). Guinness World Records has already featured them for several of these including ‘first female twins to scale Everest, first twins and siblings to scale the Seven Summits and youngest person to complete Explorers’ Grand Slam’.

In the summer of 2016, The Himalayan Club organised an expedition to attempt the first ascent of Shahi Kangri (6934m) in the Eastern mountain ranges. A five-member climbing team, accompanied by a young city lad keen for a new experience, set out together for this never-done- before task. Together, they explore the route to Shahi Kangri, and when they realised it wouldn't be possible, they attempted to scale the mighty Nya Kangri (6520m), where they had to retreat from just 200 m below the summit. This is a unique story of adventure, passion, struggle, perseverance and faith set in the breath-taking landscape of the rugged and beautiful Eastern Karakoram mountains.

5:00 PM THE WILDEST DREAM Film featuring Leo Houlding and Conrad Anker

In 2007 Leo was part a major expedition to shoot the IMAX doc-drama movie 'The Wildest Dream" on the N.E. ridge of Everest. Led by renowned American mountaineer Conrad Anker who famously discovered Mallory’s body on the upper slopes of Everest in 1999 and narrated by an allstar cast including Liam Neeson, Alan Rickman and Ralph Fiennes. Leo will introduce the film before hosting a question and answers session following the screening.

6:00 PM A CRAWL DOWN THE OGROGREEEE Doug Scott

Doug Scott will present an account of the first ascent on Baintha Brakk (Ogre), 23,900 ft in Karakoram by a British expedition comprising , Chris Bonington, Paul Braithwaite, Nick Estcourt, Clive Rowland and Doug Scott. The summit was reached on 13 July, 1977 by Scott and Bonington by a route up the West Ridge. It is the 40th anniversary of that ascent and the world premiere of the lecture.

7:00 PM PANEL ANANDD OPEN DISCUSSION --- ETHICS OF CLIMBING Doug Scott / Leo Houlding / Malik Twins

Doug will lead the discussion on the practice of drilling and bolting, touching upon his paper - The UIAA's Declaration on Preserving Natural Rock for Adventure Climbing.
