STATE LEAGUE PREVIEW

This long weekend will surely be a long weekend of football with games on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The QBE Insurance$ 1,000 Challenge will be played on Sunday between Hills •Demons• and the Western Suburbs •Magpies•. Saturdays game could be the litmus test for Parramatta against the testing team East Sydney, Parramatta has improved but have they improved that much. Coach Ken Welsh has done a super job of melding his neYt' players into his team to make a very menacing side. The strength and purposes of Parramatta newcomer Alan Seymour, the utility player from Manuka, plus the always busy Hawke brothers Brian and Ian could really trouble the Bulldogs much vaunted on the ball players. Easts now "famous• on the ball players have put the Bulldogs well into calculation for the finals - led by the ageless John Glynn and newcomer Chris Masterson. Chris MasteJson has been able to locate the big sticks regularly where Rogan Sharpe and Rod Lewis drifting down from the centrefield. The very even Demons and Magpies clash on Sunday at the Demons home ground, Pennant Hills, is the QBE Insurance $1,000 game of this round -with the winner annexing the $1,000 by courtesy of the State League Sponsors, QBE Insurance. These are two of the youngest sides in the competition and will play this vital game at full pace - both clubs proud of their dependence on youth. Respective centrefield warriors Doug Scholz (Hills) and Rob Trkula (Wests) could hold the key to success in the ruck duels. Besides ruckman Rob Trkula, Wests youngsters Scott Nicholas and Lee Urquhart could prove testing material. The solid Doug Scholz in the ruck plus the mercurial Paul Whelan, back to what he promised last year will give Hills a lot of drive. ~ North Shore will be looking to be firmly back on the premiership track when they tackle Sydney Uni on Gore Hill OVal on Sunday. Ruck dominance could be the keystone of victory for Shore with their giant captain coach Tony Smith assisted by the laconic beanpole Alistair Watchorn. Not forgetting that very dangerous goalgetter Peter Robertson who can climb high for a strong grab or sneak through a pack to raise the two flags. The in- form David Querzoli, bustling flanker Tony Loton and winger Ken Phillips should continue their recent good showings at the State Championships. Sydney University - this is a better balanced side than the students have had for some seasons thanks in large part to their coach Phil Manassa newcomers Sam and Bill Moore_ have shown desire and commitment with busy players Tim Driscoll and Andrew White well to the fore - so Bears beware! The •no frills' Campbelltown Blues have the dead set secret of success and whoever can topple 'fhem will have done a pretty fair job. Campbelltown versus St George is the match of the round for two top of the ladder teams. Saints could not be keener to upset Campbelltown and with goalkicker Mark McGrath back in ' good form again the St George forward line could do just that Not a lot of stars in the Red and White Colours but they team together and display cohesive fight tough teamwork. Man of the match at Broken Hill, the elusive Rod Podbury has never been in better form - this habitual winner of Best and Fairest Awards can be relied upon to make those all important breaks for Campbelltown that lead to goals. A close margin could be the result but St George are really sick of close margins - losing to East Sydney in their last game by 4 points, so a win by them will make the long trip to Macquarie Fields worthwhile. The "vital• or •grand final• third quarter will be just that-vital - once again, ahead at the final change Blues or Saints will be tough to catch. Not a game to leave to get a pie or you well might miss some all _important action. N.S.WA.F.L Football Record 1989

DAVO'S DEVELOPMENT DIARY

Football Is All About Being Positive It's so easy to knock things - it's human nature - or so we are told. One would venture to say that on one has gone through a single day without hearing something negative uttered by someone or other.

In football, and especially in today's "modern" game, the total emphasis is placed on thinking and acting in a positive fashion.

Detailed below are ten "positives" for players:

(1) Be Positive - Remember you are one of 18 - play for the team. (2) Be Positive - Accept the Umpire's decision - arguing only wastes time and disrupts your concentration (3) Be Positive - And you will minimise your mistake rate. (4) Be Positive - Make the football your object. You should win if you have possession [- of the ball. on more occasions than the opposition. (5) Be Positive - Listen to the instructions of the runner and follow his messages to the letter. (6) Be Positive - When possible be direct in your passage to goal. (7) Be Positive- Remain calm and composed as this will help with your concentration. (8) Be Positive - Always attempt to use your possessions wisely, creating opportunities for teammates. (9) Be Positive - Be courageous and confident (1 O) Be Positive- Listen to your coach and make certain you carry out your allotted task implicitly.

These points are all important and should not be taken in any order. Once you have perfected all of them, then you will become a very good player indeed. / << MAXIPRINT

Football Record 1989 SUPER RAFFLE Since the start of the season the RECORD have been writing the merits of the SUPER RAFFLE. You may well ask "What is the SUPER RAFFLE?" Well some time last year the administration at the NSWAFL came up with an idea which would help raise funds for football clubs right across the state.

It was resolved then that the NSWAFL would raise all the raffle prizes plus print the tickets and distribute to the clubs who made application for them free of charge. As you can see below, the League have obtained some quite healthy prizes for this venture and clubs are required to return one third of the proceeds with the ticket stubs so the state body can see some gain for their efforts as well.

The raffle will be drawn on THURSDAY, August 10 at the League Offices and results printed in the public notices section Sydney Morning Herald on August 11.

If your club has not yet obtained their issue of tickets, get on to your club secretary to contact the League Office or if they have make sure you sell your quota and return the stubs to the club raffle organiser as soon as possible. With this wet weather and the washout of games, it is becoming increasingly difficult for clubs to raise funds, so this is a great way to give your support to the game and your club. We wish you all the very best, they're not hard to sell!

The NSWAFL wishes to acknowledge the support of the following companys or people and list the prizes in the programme:
