Checklist of Birds Recorded in San Diego County, California Philip Unitt, Collection Manager, Department of Birds and Mammals, San Diego Natural History Museum This list covers all species and subspecies of birds reported reliably in San Diego County. The distribution and status of each species is unique. The following codes can only place this status in broad categories. If the species occurs in multiple roles, two may be indicated, but this simple system cannot capture the rich complexity of many patterns of bird distribution. B -- breeds in county regularly E -- designated as endangered or threatened by federal or state government--or should be I -- not native to San Diego County, introduced by man M -- occurs in county mainly in migration O -- breeds in county occasionally or exceptionally P -- pelagic, occurring mainly offshore and rarely visible from land R -- more or less resident, occurring in county year round S -- occurs mainly as a summer visitor V -- vagrant, not occurring in county annually, except in a few instances where individual birds have remained W -- occurs mainly as a winter visitor (small numbers of certain nonbreeding water birds occurring mainly as winter visitors remain year round) X -- extirpated from county as a breeding species (may still occur as a nonbreeding visitor or migrant). ** Double asterisks specify that the bird's occurrence in San Diego County is supported by specimens in the San Diego Natural History Museum. * Single asterisks specify that specimens in other museums have been reported in the literature. The English names are those adopted in the sixth edition of the American Ornithologists' Union (AOU) Check-list of North American Birds and its biennial supplements published in the Auk; alternative names by which the species is often or more commonly known are included. The scientific names and species-level classification are those of the AOU Check-list and supplements. Some commonly used alternative classifications at the level of genus are also indicated; in these cases, the genus under the less inclusive concept is placed in parentheses. The subspecies-level classification reflects my best understanding as reflected by the collection in the San Diego Natural History Museum; for those subspecies that I have not had the opportunity to study first-hand, the classification reflects the fifth edition of the AOU checklist (1957) or more recent published studies. The order of species is that of Devillers et al., Noms Français des Oiseaux du Monde (1993, which likely reflects closely the order the AOU will adopt in the upcoming seventh edition of its list.
