The Group has performed well in the first half of 2018 as our half-yearly results show. Underlying profit was up 6% with good We are recognising performances, in particular, from Astra and Jardine Cycle & Carriage. the impact of technology Our businesses are on a solid footing, but we should not take our success for granted. We operate in the most dynamic and rapidly- on our businesses evolving continent in the world and our customers are increasingly well-informed and digitally connected, and are challenging us and are responding to it by to do better all the time. making progressive We are, however, well placed to take advantage of the opportunities created by our leading positions and assets, and it is exciting to see changes. several of our businesses branching into new ventures in response. Jardine Cycle & Carriage’s investment in Vinamilk, which has a 58% market share in Vietnam, and Jardine Pacific’s acquisition of Managing Director Greatview, giving it access to a new and rapidly growing wholesale Ben Keswick market, are just two examples. I am also pleased to see how we are recognising the impact of technology on our businesses and are responding to it by making progressive changes to how we are organised and how we deliver our products and services to our customers. For example, Dairy Farm has appointed its first Chief Customer and Chief Digital officers, and Jardine Lloyd Thompson is investing in a global system that will give a single and complete view of each of their clients and enable greater insights into the market as a whole. Growth and expansion are all about seizing opportunities. Hongkong Land’s expanding presence in mainland China reflects the development of the market there and the increasing demand for mid-to-high end residential homes, and lifestyle and luxury retail offerings. As the Perspective on pages 8-13 shows, mainland China is the core market for Hongkong Land’s development property portfolio, accounting for just over 60% of the total developable area (as of June 2018). With the number of sales completions predicted to increase in the second half of this year, particularly in relation to Chongqing where it has its greatest concentration of projects, Hongkong Land is well placed to continue setting new benchmarks for quality in both the residential and retail premium sectors. I expect a good year for the Group as a whole. While there will always be challenges along the way, I am confident that our continued focus on growth and delivering the best experiences to our customers will help us achieve success.

During research, the initial in Indonesia. team came across a video on how doctors can predict the fatality of prematurely born babies by analysing their vital signs. “We thought if doctors can do it for babies using limited data, then we with the advantage of richer data from telemetry sensors should be able to predict machinery failure,” said Head of UT Digitalisation Cindy Christian. The biggest challenge was bringing together data going back many years. Sensor data was manually downloaded and stored on site, while maintenance data that recorded component failure and replacement was mostly paper based. Ultimately many boxes of documents were shipped to UT’s head office in Jakarta for scanning and input. An App was created to enable the input of all data in a digital format and a dashboard was also built to monitor, control and detail the condition of machinery, including an alert for any abnormality. For many, this improvement was an impressive enough achievement. Taking it to another level by developing a predictive maintenance model would verge on the impossible. Not, however, for the UT team. “Many people thought we should focus on digitising manual processes, but the goal of UT digitalisation is to create an extraordinary customer experience. Unscheduled breakdowns have been customers’ biggest issue so the ability to predict and prevent these will enable us to deliver that goal,” said Head of Predictive Maintenance Ferdinand Wijaya. “We had our ups and downs, but supported by excellent teamwork, we achieved the impossible.” The pilot model is centred around two heavy machines, the HD785, which is a large dump truck and the PC2000, a large hydraulic excavator. In total, it can predict failure for nine key components.
