Michael Dadap Solo
MICHAEL DADAP Guitar, Conducting, Composition, Principal Conductor, YSE ,ESE Bio (432 Words) Michael Dadap was born in the Philippines to a family of musicians. His early music interests were as a jazz and folk guitarist before becoming interested in classical guitar. He studied philosophy at the University of the Philippines; and, in 1971 he moved to New York City to study music theory and classical guitar at Mannes College of Music, and composition and conducting at Juilliard. In reviewing COS Young Symphonic Ensemble (YSE) at New York’s Town Hall on May 3, 1993, music and dance critic Bert Wechsler dubbed Michael Dadap a “fine, sensitive musician who is obviously also a mighty orchestra builder…a teacher. What drives Mr. Dadap’s work is his faith in the children’s capacity to learn and his energy, patience, and special talent in communicating his love for music to the children.” Mr. Dadap has recorded six CD albums for the classical guitar. His “Intimate Guitar Classics” for solo guitar was the featured album in February 1990 on The New York Times classical radio station, WQXR. Mr. Dadap performs as the Dadap- Ma Duo, in the United States, Asia and Europe. He also travels annually to the Philippines to concertize, teach, and give workshops on Philippine Folk Instruments orchestra called the Rondalla. Mr. Dadap became the first recipient of the “2000 Artist of the Year Award” sponsored by the Flushing Council on the Arts in Queens. In December 2006, he received the “Philippine Presidential Award” in the Philippines’ Malacanang Palace in recognition of his remarkable achievements as a virtuoso musician, composer, music teacher, proponent of Philippine traditional music, and for promoting Philippine culture and causes through his work.

Michael Dadap's Visit
MICHAEL DADAP'S VISIT Flashback 25 years. We first met Mike Dadap unknow- ingly in Los Angeles sometime in the late 1980s during a concert of a Filipino group from the East Coast. We were there to see our good friend Maurie Borromeo, music major from UP, who later had done graduate studies in ethnomusicology. In the group was soprano Priscilla Magdamo, which rang a bell because her sister, Martha, was part of the close-knit Tanjay circle of friends we maintained in Los Angeles. At the end of the concert, we purchased a vinyl record produced by Magdamo, and it indicated that the solo guitar accompanist was Michael Dadap. The album "Ang Katahum Mubihag (Beauty Captivates) - Songs of the Visayas", was dated 1982. Except for well known pieces such as "Ay Kalisud" and "Dandansoy", most of the other selections were not, as they originally were taken from field recordings of ethnic music collected by Magdamo from the Visayas and Mindanao in the mid 50s, as part of a Silliman Music Foundation project under a Rockefeller Foundation grant. The pieces were the collaborative effort of Magdamo and Dadap. One that caught my fancy was titled "Day, Baling Mingawa" where in the highlands of Valencia, west of That's Lisa with Mike in 2007, at the Dumaguete Exposition Hall, Dumaguete, haunting calls echo about loneliness, and the where a whole lot of Philippine goods were displayed. DJ Neil Armstrong turned his love of music and hip hop culture into a career that has allowed him to play music for the masses all over the world – from small 100 person venues to large scale music festivals with thousands in attendance. Neil initially gained notoriety for his mixtape projects, which showcased his DJ skills as well as his vast eclectic knowledge of music. The growing audience lead him to work with brands such as Adidas and Undefeated, which in turn led to working with large scale related industry entities like the NBA, BMW, and VH1 to name a few. Eventually Neil’s reputation landed him a spot as Jay-Z’s tour DJ. From 2008-2010 he backed up Jay-Z on 4 tours around North America, Europe and Africa.
