NOTES ON THE PROGRAM ALEXANDER BORODIN Born November 12, 1833, Saint Petersburg Died February 27, 1887, Saint Petersburg Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor BY RICHARD FREED Borodin was not a full-time musician: he was by profession a chemist and physician, and while an important one, as documented by the statues erected in Russia in honor of Borodin the scientist. Prince Igor, his most ambitious musical work, occupied him for some 18 years, but his other commitments left him no time for completing the opera. He wrote his own libretto, with the help of the critic Vladimir Stasov, based on The Epic of Igor and His Army. He studied the lore and music of the Turkomans and Tatars, and he set about to write a thoroughly Russian opera, as Mussorgsky had done, owing little or nothing to Italian or German tradition.

However, they continue to play an important role in Russia’s self-exploration and historical identity. This dissertation seeks to address the matter of what it means to interpret history through the lens of opera. What assumptions about history are present in these works by virtue of the genre? To answer this question, this dissertation draws on the essays of W. H. Auden who asserts that in opera, virtuosic singing causes even real, historical persons to seem like the gods and heroes of myth. This principle serves as something of the reversal of the concept of displacement that Northrop Frye discusses in Anatomy of Criticism. According to Frye, all plots have a mythic core. Realistic works displace their mythic core by limiting the power of heroes and placing greater obstacles in their way. In opera, the process collapses. A realistic or historical plot may displace the mythic elements of the story of an opera, but the virtuosic singing reconnects the plot with its mythic core.

It was built by the Meneely Bell Foundry of Watervliet, NY. The Meneely Company’s origins go back to 1785, to a spot only two miles from Storrs Congregational Church. Colonel Benjamin Hanks, the first founder of church bells in the United States, operated his foundry on Hanks Hill Road in Mansfield. Later he moved to upstate New York, where a Meneely married into the family and took over the business. The Dunham Memorial Carillon was installed in the tower of the present Meeting House by the Meneely Company in 1931. Although the carillon was to be the property of the college, the college determined that the church tower was the most suitable space. At a special meeting in December, 1930, the congregation of the church voted to allow installation of the bells in its tower. Special holes were cut in the ceiling of the church vestibule and the tower room and extra bracing installed in the tower room.
