The Hulu Original will feature stories told through a distinct reporting lens, immersive narratives and fresh perspectives on the important -- and sometimes controversial -- issues defining today’s culture. Hulu has ordered a ten-episode season of VICE Investigates, which will stream exclusively on Hulu launching the first three episodes on Friday, November 1, 2019, followed by monthly, one episode per month, premieres beginning in December. Each of the ten VICE Investigates episodes will provide audiences with an in-depth experience exploring timely topics and questions, such as the complex geopolitical divide between Iran and Saudi Arabia; a deep dive into the seldom seen human side of K-Pop rockstars; and a first-hand look at the experiences of intersex and transgender athletes attempting to redefine the gender lines of competition in a non-binary world. VICE Investigates joins Hulu’s growing offering of premium news content and culturally relevant documentary series and films, including the The Weekly from The New York Times, in partnership with FX, as well as Hulu Original Documentaries such as the Oscar®-nominated Minding The Gap, Ask Dr. Ruth, Fyre Fraud, Crime + Punishment, Untouchable and The Amazing Johnathan Documentary. The three premiere episodes of VICE Investigates include: AMAZON ON FIRE: Emmy award-winning VICE News correspondent Seb Walker will take audiences to the front lines of the fires blazing throughout the Amazon where politics are rolling back decades of work to save the forest and potentially the planet. As Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro is confronted with an unprecedented ecological disaster conservationists are placing blame squarely at his feet. Key interviews include French President Emmanuel Macron, an outspoken critic of the government’s response, as well as indigenous people and ranchers who have been living on the land for generations but are in bitter opposition over its value, legacy and stewardship. RUSSIA’S WAR ON HIP-HOP: Hip-hop has taken Russia by storm, quickly becoming one of the most popular genres among young people. But the Kremlin claims Hip-hop artists are encouraging drug use, violence, and other social ills, and now their concerts are being cancelled.     April 2021 #105 ________________________________________________________________________________________ _______ Pre-Upfront Thoughts on Broadcast TV, Promotions, Nielsen, and AVOD By Steve Sternberg Last year’s upfront season was different from any I’ve been involved in during my 40 years in the business. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were no live network presentations to the industry, and for the first time since I’ve been evaluating television programming, I did not watch any of the fall pilots before the shows aired. Many new and returning series experienced production delays, resulting in staggered premieres, shortened seasons, and unexpected cancellations. The big San Diego and New York comic-cons were canceled. There was virtually no pre-season buzz for new broadcast or cable series. Stuck at home with fewer new episodes of scripted series than ever to watch on ad-supported TV, people turned to streaming services in large numbers. Netflix, which had plenty of shows in the pipeline, surged in terms of both viewers and new subscribers. Disney+, boosted by season 2 of The Mandalorian and new Marvel series, WandaVision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier, was able to experience tremendous growth. Where I learned how not what to think – truly one of the greatest gifts of a UChicago education. It’s also where I met my husband and made lifelong friends. But 16 years ago, sitting where you are, I still had so many questions. I was free! I was going to do big things. But how exactly would I do those big things? So I come here today with five hopefully valuable lessons, some more hard won than others, that I’ve learned on my post-UChicago journey.
