Music Providing in New Ways Rumble Delivers the Hits March 4, 2019, Issue 642 Music Providing In New Ways For 10 years, Henry has lived in a nursing home as one of the estimated 5.7 million Americans with Alzheimer’s. A man who once loved singing and dancing, who would regularly take his kids on walks to perform “Singin’ In The Rain” – complete with jumping and swinging around poles – was reduced to barely speaking. That changed the day Music & Memory set up an iPod program at his nursing home. Launched in 2006, the New York-based program is on a mission to bring personalized music to the elderly and infirm nationwide. Not surprisingly, the country community has jumped in with support. Little Big Town headlined a 2017 ACM Lifting Lives event benefiting the non-profit organization. “The reason we all fell in love with music in the first place is because it reaches you at a depth that nothing else does,” noted LBT’s Jimi Westbrook at the time. To that point, back to Henry, whose once unresponsive face lights up with expression upon hearing his favorite music. (A 2012 video clip went viral. See it here.) A Conversation with Brandi Carlile by Frank Goodman (7/2007. Puremusic.com) Raw talent vs. expensive packaging is always a pleasant surprise in the entertainment business. Brandi Carlile is the very rare exception to the rule; she and her band made their own EP, piece by piece with their own money, and Columbia ended up buying it and putting it out. Rolling Stone chose her as one of the 10 Artists to Watch in 2005. The subsequent Columbia full length debut CD contained new versions of a number of the songs from the EP. Relentless gigging leading up to the EP and through the debut had already moved her through various styles with her running twin partners, the Hanseroth Brothers. Tim and Phil had had a hard rock band called The Fighting Machinists, and they bring that honed edge to the BC sound. She is not only a vocalist that can literally do it all, the band itself moves fluidly and convincingly from flat out country right through edgy pop radio rock. She's the only artist you can see on CMT whose main cited influences are Elton John, k.d. lang, Jeff Buckley, and Radiohead. One hears all the time now about how acts getting tunes on Grey's Anatomy can practically launch their career, but in BC's case, there was a Grey's episode that actually debuted a version of the video for Brandi's big song "The Story." Overall, no less than four of her songs have been used in the show. She's hot, super talented, and a driven workaholic.

September 3 2019, Issue 669 Pick Six: Label Draft 2019 Seven years ago, Country Aircheck’s Fantasy Label Draft began as an entertaining forum for radio pros to chat about artists and make bold predictions for the year to come. For the first six seasons, VP/GM Chuck Aly served as commissioner and declared winners based upon a method that is just questionable enough to have come from the New England Patriots’ camp, “Chuck’s Eyeball Test.” But this is 2019, and all bets are off. No participation trophies here! What good is a game without a winner? And how do you declare a winner without a score? Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.
