WELCOME TO THE VET DESK…

Welcome to all the new families of Henley High and welcome back to all the existing families. I would like to introduce myself; Tania Duff-Tytler aka. Ms D or Ms Duff, as the student’s call me. I am the VET coordinator for Henley High for 2010. I have a trade background and have taught at TAFE for several years and am passionate about student learning, career pathways and study options.

The education department is full of acronyms and the VET sphere seems to embrace them with a passion. VET stands for Vocational Education and Training, and within a school context; this translates into courses being offered to students with Nationally Accredited Units, which are part of a Nationally Accredited Certificate or a Trade Certificate. It allows them to gain partial or full Certificates in a trade or industry specific area.

Henley High School is part of the Western Futures cluster group, which is a group of 28 schools who offer a range of VET courses and Nationally Accredited Certificates to all of the students in all of the associated schools.

At Henley High we are proud to run 11VET programmes on site.

 Certificate II in Creative Industries / Multimedia (to be offered in 2011)  Certificate II in Sport and Recreation (Event Management)  Certificate I in General Construction (Doorways to construction)  Certificate I in Furnishing  Certificate II in Information Technology  Certificate I in Metal & Engineering  Certificate 1 in Electro technology  Certificate I in Introduction to Vocational Education (IVEC)  Certificate II Hospitality (Food & Beverage)  Certificate II Community services (Childcare focus)  Certificate III Fitness  Defence Industries Pathway Program (DIPP)

These programmes are delivered by Henley teachers (DIPP in conjunction with TAFE) who are registered trainers and assessors, who have trade qualifications or current industry experience. To provide optimum training for our students, our teacher/trainers are always looking to further their skills and knowledge through professional development courses run by Industry Partners or TAFE SA so that they can provide training that is current, up to date and industry specific. The teacher/trainers at Henley pride themselves on delivering engaging, interesting and industry focused courses to provide students with the necessary skills and knowledge pertinent to the industry they may wish to pursue, whilst simultaneously instilling the work ethos and personal attributes expected by employers of that specific industry.

It is my job to ensure student needs are met; on an academic and career pathway level, and I urge students or parents to make an appointment to meet with me or call me on 83557000 or email me [email protected] to discuss an aspect of Vocational Education and Training and students future pathway options.

Tania Duff-Tytler VET Coordinator

I would like to introduce Chris Houltby the Apprenticeship Broker Servicing Henley High School. Working closely with myself; Tania Duff-Tytler (VET Co- ordinator). Chris main duties involve connecting students with local industry and business; with the intent of creating School Based Apprenticeships (SBA’s) (part time).Students can “learn and earn”, gaining a nationally accredited qualification whilst completing their SACE. I encourage any student or parent interested in traineeships and apprenticeships to meet with Chris on Wednesday mornings via an appointment through Chris G at Student Services or contact him on 0488 584 029 or email [email protected]

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY BUILDINGS REDEVELOPMENT Cont. YEAR 8 CAMP REPORT

The Year 8 camp for 2010 got off to a great start with beautiful weather at the beginning of the week, and slightly cooler weather towards the end.

Activities included Snorkelling, Fishing, Billy Carts, Problem Solving, Beach Sports, and Raft Making. There were plenty of opportunities to get in the water, relax, hike, and scramble for ‘best team’ on the Quiz nights. A tie for first place was decided by a spelling competition – to thunderous applause.

The food was plentiful and enjoyable, and many stu- dents were able to show their cleaning up skills after meals. Ms Ambler was happy to demonstrate correct The view of the extended area in Woodwork mopping techniques to interested students, and Ms and Plastics Queen knew that students were finally asleep when a giant moth flew out of one dorm room – and no one screamed!

A very enjoyable camp for all concerned!

ABORIGINAL EDUCATION Quiet Sumner ready to roll

By Michael Rogers 12:51 PM Fri 19 February, 2010

With all the hype surrounding the ’ off-season recruits, fans could be forgiven for overlooking the progress of young midfielder Byron Sumner.

Daniel Bradshaw and Shane Mumford both arrived at the club in a hail of publicity, while fellow draftees and were both highly regarded first-round NAB AFL Draft selections.

Even fellow late-round draftee, Trent Dennis-Lane, has earned his share of headlines with standout performances in the club’s practice matches. While Sumner might have flown under the media radar, his work ethic and football smarts certainly haven’t escaped the attention of the Swans’ football department. Development coach Stuart Maxfield and coaching co- ordinator John Longmire have both praised the South Australian’s ability to adapt to a new game plan while maintaining his natural flair.

Now, Sumner will join Rohan, Jetta and Dennis-Lane in wearing the red and white for the first Byron Sumner time in Saturday night’s NAB Cup opener against Carlton at Blacktown Olympic Park. And he couldn’t be more excited at the prospect.

“It’s something I’ve really worked hard for and a dream that I’ve had all my life. To come here and do a hard pre-season - it’s really all paid off now,” he said.

It certainly has, with the 174cm young midfielder/forward sporting a vastly different physique after adding nine kilograms to his frame since the night he was drafted.

Sumner credited the experience of doing an SANFL pre-season with his former club, Wood- ville/West Torrens, with his ability to cope with the new workload.

“I did a bit of league pre-season back home in Adelaide, so training every day wasn’t such an issue,” he said. UNIFORM SHOP

“It was just the amount of training, I guess. I struggled a bit at the start but I got through.” Due to the current work being Sumner had nothing but praise for his Swans teammates who had helped him adjust to life in a done on the Tech Studies new city - “They’re real people, down to earth people” - and said he couldn’t wait to take the building the Uniform Shop will field with his fellow draftees. only be open on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8am- Sumner’s father will also be in attendance on Saturday night, having driven almost 1400km to 9am. And with some luck, Saturday’s game will be a stepping stone to any young player’s holy grail - a senior AFL debut in round one.

“It’s still my biggest goal and I’ve got to go out Saturday night and do what I’ve got to do, keep training hard and fight for a spot,” he said.

SPORTS DAY 2010

2010 SPORTS DAY INFORMATION

PARENTS/CAREGIVERS

Parents/Caregivers are invited to attend to cheer for their sons and daughters and add to the atmosphere of the day. All students need to return the tear-off slip below to their Care Group teacher. If intending to attend, please respond accord- ingly on the slip below to give us an indication of how many to cater for. If you wish to assist in any way on the day, or on the following school representative meets, please also indicate below, giving your name, contact number and type of assistance offered.

TOO HOT OR TOO WET??

If the forecast on the radio at 7.30am on the day is for 35 degrees Celsius or higher, then students must bring their books and the day will proceed as a normal school day. The Sports Day would then be cancelled. If it looks as if the weather is going to be too wet to continue or start, students should bring their books to school just in case.

However, as we predict it to be a magnificent day, we shouldn’t need these precautions!!

IMPORTANT NOTES

All students will meet their Care Group Teacher at a designated area at Henley Little Athletics Oval at 8.40am for Care Group teachers to mark their roll. A brief assembly in front of the Little Athletics Clubrooms will take place before events begin at 9.15am sharp.

EVERYONE is encouraged to bring their own;  WIDE-BRIMMED HAT OR PEAKED CAP  SUNSCREEN  SUNGLASSES

Competitors should wear their House colour, including wide-brimmed hat and turning the collar of their shirt up to help protect their neck from the sun. House Groups are encouraged to set up sun shades or umbrellas. DO NOT bring books and valuables down to the oval; leave them at home please. If you have to bring valuables to school, get some advice/ help from your Care Group teacher.

ALL students should ensure they have a nutritious breakfast to enable them to compete safely and effectively, and bring food and DRINK with them. Drinking plenty of water the day before competition helps prevent dehydration, as well as replacing fluid as it is lost on the day. Do not wait until you are thirsty before you have a drink. The canteen staff will again be running a food/drink van.
