In my role I am constantly in touch with individuals who are serious about climbing the greasy pole to the higher echelons of the profession.

Over time, one identifies certain traits and behaviours that tend to lead to Collaboration career success, and others that tend to lead to dissatisfaction. The second ‘success trait’ is an understanding that learning the craft of lawyering requires co-operation with solicitors from rival firms as well as Craftsmanship competition with them. The first characteristic that tends to lead to success in the legal sphere is a desire to master the craft of ‘lawyering’ - it’s about taking your skills Curiosity about what competitors know, think, or doubt and a willingness seriously, developing something solid in yourself to sell. to build collaborative bridges with rivals are hallmarks of lawyers who are destined for the top.

Conversely, sheer possessiveness with intellectual capital and aggression towards competitor lawyers are traits often seen in lawyers whose careers never seem to take-off.

Perhaps the best evidence for this is the regular professional contact that the Managing Partners from Manchester’s leading law firms have with one another. They find the exchange of information and ideas invaluable, and in many cases they secure their appointments, in part, because their partners know they are skilled at building bridges with opposite numbers - a process which they probably began as Trainee Solicitors, if not undergraduates at their law faculty.

Manchester Law Society The Manchester Law Society provides a framework in which you can build such collaborative bridges with your peers, and in doing so, enable yourself to become a better and more-rounded professional.

Legal education and training (even at the most enlightened law firms) is largely based around the acquisition of facts and technical skills. Most lawyers take this seriously, but it is those who also learn to listen to and collaborate with the profession more widely, that are likely to have the most fulfilling and prosperous careers.

There is nothing new about the idea of building collaborative bridges with competitors, craftsman’s guilds, scientific institutions and professional societies have contributed to the commercial success of businesses for hundreds of years.

In today’s demanding environment of chargeable hours, billing targets and inter-professional networking, younger lawyers may think that the intra- professional collaboration encouraged by the Manchester Law Society is a waste of their time.

Ironically, it is precisely this type of intra-professional collaboration that may empower and enable them to successfully meet all the other more obvious and pressing challenges of their careers. 6 The Manchester Law Society Messenger Manchester MOVERS & SHAKERS Celebrity Lawyer Mr Loophole Successfully Intellectual Property comes to JMW Trademarks “Mr Loophole”!
