Framing is one techniques used to enhance the visual impact of a photograph. In some cases, the framing technique can be used to hide away distracting objects such as trees, lamp posts etc. This will help prevent the viewer from being distracted and the building will appear more prominent. This photograph was shot from a low angle with the camera pointing upwards. Distortion is inevitable and my priority is to have the building composed in a pleasing manner, never mind if the structure used for the framing technique is severely distorted.

SHAPES (RIGHT) , Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO400, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/200s, Aperture f9, 10.5mm Fisheye PERSPECTIVE AND LINES (ABOVE) While waiting at the airport terminal, the shapes of the Nikon D2X, 3D Matrix Metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO125, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/250s, Aperture f5, 18-200mm roof attracted me. We had a lot of time and I enjoyed VR set at 18mm looking at the roof. I needed the wide coverage to include the shapes within the viewfi nder. As the Perspective shows the distance and depth of a structure. It allows one to view the scale of a building, interior or exterior, from a photograph which is actually 2 fi sheye lens was used, I had to carefully play with the Dimensional. This is one of the most effective and frequently used approaches by photographers. I had the fl exibility of a 18-200mm VR lens which is my all time distortion. The noise level at ISO 400 for the D300 is favourite. I took various angles, vertical, horizontal and fi nally this wide angle with 18mm. I was attracted by the perspective, lines and also the shadow. A low ISO relatively low, hence I often photograph the interior can be used as the lighting was suffi cient. with ISO around this range if I did not bring my tripod. The Program Mode gave me an aperture of f9 which was good enough for a decent depth of fi eld. If I had a tripod, I would set the ISO to 100 and aperture set at f22 with Aperture Priority Mode. However, this is quite unlikely to be done inside the airport while transiting, less the security personnel come after me.

DISTORTION CONTROL (BELOW) Both picture taken by Nikon D60, Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO100, Program Mode, 12-24mm set at 12mm

Very often, many photographers will photograph a building from a low angle and this often leads to distortion, especially if no Distortion Control (DC) lenses are used. In this case, the better way to solve the problem is to try to photograph the building from a further distance or photograph the building from a higher building opposite. The photograph on the left above was photographed from across the junction on the road, hence from a low angle, distortion is inevitable. The photograph on the right was taken from the building opposite, on the 4th fl oor. Distortion is minimized.

ARCHITECTURE AT NIGHT (ABOVE) , Centre Weighted metering, Auto White Balance, ISO200, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/20s, Aperture f6.7, 18-70mm set at 70mm

Darkness blanketed the sky. The lights were switched on. I was on the Sheares Bridge walkway and found this angle interesting, with framing, patterns and lines. Despite the sky being black, the lights on the buildings somehow made this a pleasing photograph. I had a tripod hence I used a low ISO 200. The buildings are quite a distant away, hence an aperture of f6.7 was suffi cient to provide a decent depth of fi eld for overall sharpness. I also tried to avoid getting a slower shutter speed as the bridge would vibrate when vehicles moved past. Well, there was no way I can stop the traffi c on the expressway.

FROM AERIAL VIEW (ABOVE) Nikon D2X, 3D Matrix Metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO100, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/250s, Aperture f8, 12-24mm set at 12mm

This aerial photograph was shot from a helicopter hovering high above the buildings. It showed the prosperous region of Singapore where the sky scrappers occupying the expensive piece of land. It was a thrilling experience as the door of the helicopter was removed and what held me was a harness strap. It was cooling up there and the helicopter had to hover around up and down several times to get the angle right. The lighting was more than suffi cient and very bright from high up in the sky. The trip high up in the sky was not cheap, hence I took many photographs of various angles especially the horizontal and vertical angles.

The building lights were switched on and from this view, the sky scrappers, the old shop houses the artifi cial ambient lights were switched on. The artifi cial and the HDB fl ats were all portrayed in a single photograph. The contrast of the old and new buildings attracted my attention. The buildings are at a far distant ambient lighting, if placed appropriately, can render the away, hence there is no need for a small aperture. ANCIENT RUINS (ABOVE) Nikon D2X, 3D Matrix Metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO800, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/250s, Aperture f3.5, 18-200mm VR set at 18mm

Do not forsake the ancient ruins. These are historical testament to the civilizations of the past. It can be a great experience exploring and photographing the ancient ruins, and visualize how they look like in their days of splendour in the past. The structures are not colourful and the day was cloudy. I thought that the monochrome effect would render the photograph with a rustic mood. Traditional techniques like burning can be done in the image enhancement software. I set the aperture to f3.5 as I did not want to have a greater depth of fi eld. The statue on the right is sharp and the rest in the background are blurred due to the shallower depth of fi eld. This allows me to create a visual feeling of the depth and distances between the statues and the walls.

NATURAL LIGHTING AND TIME OF THE DAY (ABOVE) Nikon D300, 3D Matrix Metering, Daylight White Balance, ISO640, Aperture Priority Mode, Shutter speed 1/500s, Aperture f5.6, 18-200mm VR set at 200mm

It is very common for architecture photographers to photograph the buildings and structures either in the early morning or late afternoon when the lighting is not PATTERNS (RIGHT) too harsh. This is mainly about the quality of light. Singapore is very close to the equatorial line and unlike countries in the northern and southern hemisphere. Nikon D70, Centre Weighted metering, Daylight White Harsh lighting is common in the late morning, noon and early afternoon. The golden glow of the late afternoon gave this building a visually soothing effect, with Balance, ISO400, Program Mode, Shutter speed 1/250s, the shadow and highlight showing the shapes and contours of the building. I used a higher ISO at 640 as I did not have a tripod with me. The focal length used Aperture f9, 18-200mm VR set at 70mm was at 200mm. With the VR (Vibration Reduction) switched on and the biggest aperture used at f5.6 at 200mm, I managed to get the photograph with a shutter speed of 1/500 of a second without camera shake. I found the repetition of the windows very unique and very neat indeed. With light shining in from the right, the contours were revealed through the shadows and highlight. Though the building is not colourful, the shades created by the shadow and highlight made up for it. The image enhancement software was used to manipulate the distortion to make the lines as straight as possible.

The colours of the roof of this temple in Tibet struck me. I was appalled at how the ancient civilizations in the past can create such wonderful structures and have them painted with such rich colours. The tradition still lives on today and the refurbishment of the temple brought the temple back to its past glory. With focal length at 18mm and shutter speed of 1/80 of a second using ISO320 and the VR switched on, I had no problem photographing this image without a tripod.

I did not have my tripod with me as it was not easy to set up the tripod in the interior of the temple where I had much space constraint. ISO 800 was used and my focal length set at 14mm. Aperture f2.8 was used and a shutter speed of 1/80 of a second was achieved.
