Common date coin with beautiful color and a big price tag Back in the day collectors would put brand new coins from their local banks into blue Whitman folders. It was the best method we had to store and show off our “treasures”. Little did we know a secret was lurking within the blue folder. Only decades later could we see the effect of the “secret”. Provided The cardboard used to produce SWOSU recently announced its team that will represent the university at the 2019 NASA Human Exploration the folders contained sulfuric Rover Challenge in Alabama. Therefore, it is a common date for coin collectors. But, the “hero” of this column went to the auction block in September 2018 at Las Vegas sponsored by Legend Rare Coins. The pre-auction estimate was $15,000 to $17,000. The particular half dollar was certified by the Professional Coin Grading Company (PCGS) as a Mint State 67+ Full Bell Lines (FBL). (It is just a “whisper” away from a Mint State 68). When the hammer fell this 1958 half dollar brought the house down. The lucky buyer paid $129,500 for a common date, and brightly toned, half dollar. Anyone own a Whitman folder with half dollars in it? If so, call 405-222-8718. Thanks for reading.
