BLACKSTAR BY JOSHUA VIOLA PDF In a world blasted and barren, the last bastion of civilization is a fortress-city called Central. Kaine, the city's benevolent arbiter, rules over the people in exchange for his gift to them: Re:memory—a public archive containing humanity's memories of the world before it was destroyed. Rezin doesn't know who he is or why he's in Central, but he does know this: he is a Reaper. His combination of gifts and abilities allow him to decrypt any system and steal information to sell to the highest bidder. His talents afford him a life of luxury until the day he plugs into Re:memory and reaps something he wasn't looking for—something Kaine will do anything to get back. When Rezin meets Elara, an intrepid adventurer with a troubled past, and Vray and Bastian, mysterious twins possessing incredible powers, they embark on a journey through space and time in search of the answers Rezin seeks. Alongside the book, an original musical score (available separately) by producer/composer Celldweller accompanies the story, composed of over an hours worth of cinematic atmospheres to transport you directly to Central, The Outlands and the world of Rezin and Elara. ● Sales Rank: #894497 in eBooks ● Published on: 2015-09-18 ● Released on: 2015-09-18 ● Format: Kindle eBook Most helpful customer reviews 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Prepare to have your mind BLOWN - awesome read. By Ashley Wow! This story blew my tiny mind! Do yourself a favour, and read it along to the sound of the awesome and ridiculously talented Celldweller's original musical score that accompanies this book (separately). It only enhances the experience of your immersion, and makes it, the imagery, and rich, completely INSANELY rich tapestry of futuristic scene scapes even more intoxicating. I loved the characters, spending time with them was easy and a bit of fun. The story has exciting layers of complexity that keeps the reader hooked. It's clear a lot of care and attention has gone into creating this world and the characters that inhabit it, you are very quickly drawn in, and enchanted. I did find myself craving a bit more 'sexy' between the epic characters Rezin and Elara, because their chemistry was a beautiful, beautiful thing to be part of as a reader, but this is not a romance after all. Get on it! 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Be ready for a ride through space and time unlike anything you've experienced before. By Bookseller The characters of this book jump at you from the opening pages and drag you in. Read this one while listening to the driving tunes of Celldweller and you'll be in for a wild ride through space and time. Joshua Viola knows how to pull you through the worlds and times he created and you'll want to see and learn more the whole way. Rezin, Venus, Elana and Viola's other characters will take you to places you won't soon forget. Give this one a read. Then be sure to read Joshua Viola's other work, The Bane of Yoto, Luna One and his newest, Nightmares Unhinged, a horror anthology which he edited with stories by some of the best writers of today should not be missed. Keep an eye out for more from Joshua Viola. He's on a roll and he's just getting started. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Overall enjoyable despite some plot holes By Jessica Shook I'm a pretty big sci-fi/cyber punk/time travel fan, and so the read was right up my alley and enjoyable. I did find some formatting/grammar/syntax problems, but I've found far worse in some "critically acclaimed pop sensation" books; they did not detract from the enjoyment of the read. Pacing was well done. I feel like there was plenty of action and suspense interspersed throughout the novel, and the dialog was well worked. It was very descriptive, but didn't suffer from purpley-prose. There were only two style choices that I wasn't offended by, but others may be. It's told from 3rd person omniscient most of the time, but will then sometimes dive down into the person's head, give their thoughts/feelings/senses, which is then 3rd person limited. It's also told in past tense, but includes present tense words like "this", "now", and "here". Rezin, our leading man, was left a bit blank, and I feel this is unfortunate. He could have inspired a lot more feeling from me, but there were some missed opportunities to link me to him. The only thing that irked me a bit was some of the references to Celldweller/Scandroid music. A few would have been alright, but within the first 50 pages, there's nearly 12 references to different songs/song elements. It gets to a point where it feels very forced, and they don't mesh together as well as I was hoping. Battle descriptions were fantastic. I always felt very in the moment when it came to combat. Josh pulled out all the stoppers on his vocabulary. Embarrassingly enough, I had to look up a few words through my read. All the more to add to my own mental dictionary, though! I enjoy variety in my reading. Seeing the same words over and over gets pretty exhausting. ~~~~~~~~~~SPOILERS AHEAD~~~~~~~~~~ The main issue I took with the novel was a few plot holes. #1 The solution to all of their problems could have been solved in the one retro of Rezin saving Kaine years ago. He could have gone back in and just stopped himself from saving Kaine, Vray, and Bastion. Novel over. This could have happened about halfway through. #2 The Outlanders respond to Elara's (excuse me for saying but) short/weak rallying speech, when previously some of the Outlanders spoke candidly of raping and killing her. She was not developed as a leader of her people, and it didn't seem to fit that the Outlanders responded to her call at the end of the novel. #3, and this one is TOTALLY unimportant, just an observation of the end of the book. A tangent universe was created and sustained independently where Kaine was killed and reborn with Solaris' powers, yet the universe where Kaine was destroyed at 20 years old did not result in a universe where Elara and Venus were born, though they may already exist... and then, when Kaine was killed in the past before he melded with Solaris, the future him from the main branch universe held together, possibly by the existence of Elara and Venus themselves, disappeared from existence, but they didn't? Time travel creates an interesting layer of complexity, but some of the events when held side by side don't match identical behaviors of time travel paradoxes.
