Nicknaming of individual athletes and sports teams is a multifaceted phenomenon the analysis of which reveals numerous reasons for choosing a particular name or nickname. The practice of nicknaming has become so embedded in the concept of sport that it requires exceptional attention by those who create these labels. The goal of this research was to analyse the semantic structure of boxers’ nicknames, i.e. the possible principles of their formation. To realize the research aims 378 male boxers’ nicknames, predominantly in the English language, were collected. The nicknames were allocated to semantic categories according to the content area or areas they referred to. Counts and percentages were calculated for the nicknames in each subsample created with regard to the number of semantic categories used to create a boxer’s nickname and for the group of nicknames allocated to the miscellaneous group. Counts were calculated for all groups within each subsample. Key words: hero, association, figurative language, figures of speech 1. INTRODUCTION Are nicknames only arbitrary formations of little account or are they coinages contrived meticulously and with a lot of prowess? He defended the title eight times and retired as undefeated champion in 1925, to please the only woman he loved, his mother. But the 1929 Wall Street Crash wiped out his fortune and he was forced to make a comeback at 35.

    Johnny Kilbane: The Making of a Boxer Not many Clevelanders of Irish descent can boast that 200,000 people lined the streets of downtown Cleveland just to catch a glimpse of them. That’s what happened on March 17, 1912, when boxer Johnny Kilbane returned from California to his hometown after winning the world featherweight title for the first time a few weeks earlier, on February 22. It was a title Kilbane would retain through 1923—a record of ten straight years that, even today, has yet to be beat at any weight category in professional boxing. Kilbane was born in 1889, in “the Angle” neighborhood of Cleveland on West 28th Street, near Old River Road. His father, also John Kilbane, had immigrated about a decade earlier from the small island of Achillbeg, off the western coast of Ireland. His mother, a Mary Gallagher, had been born in Cleveland to Irish parents. Johnny’s mother died when he was three, his father subsequently went blind, and Johnny had to leave school at St. Malachi’s at a young age to work as a laborer. Under those tough circumstances, he would later recall, “I was just one of those little kids that run wild, and, like Topsy, ‘I just grew.’” The young Kilbane dreamed of joining a vaudeville “hoofing” or tumbling act. But in 1906, he attended a boxing match at the LaSalle Club on West 25th Street and was hooked. As he would remember, “the lights and the crowd, the prominent Clevelanders present, the heavy cigar smoke and the general atmosphere of romance made a deep impression on me.” A friend suggested that Johnny seek out Jimmy Dunn, a professional fighter who was training at that time near Vermilion.

A PageRank algorithm was utilized to rank the boxers from the network to determine a list of the top 10 fighters from 1897 to 2019. Two data sets were utilized, a truncated subset and a larger data set, to explore the impact of network size on the rank of boxers. Additionally, the researchers systematically varied the damping factor of the PageRank algorithm to determine the effects on the rankings. A discussion of the results includes a comparison of journalistic rankings and those from a points-based system from the respected boxing website BoxRec.
