Hank Kaplan, historian, promoter, colleague, friend and an IBRO'er corresponds with this tourist. Hank's love for our boxing "dodge" stands out in every note he writes. Kaplan, chock full of info, tells us visited Hank at his home. Always loves seeing Tom. "Heeney, now 84, is in good shape only somewhat forgetful, expectedly so, considering the tough battles he was in."

Al "Bummy" Davis - Hank Kaplan notes Davis was killed in a bar - stick - up. Sports historian James Bus wrote, "Recalling the date around November 20, 1945, was killed (shot) in a tavern. Actually he was in a bar/tavern operated by a friend of his, when two hoods came in and held up the place. Bummy, being a boxer, was ready to take the two guys on with his bare fists. As you know, fists can't match bullets. As I recall, Davis was shot a couple of times inside the bar. But that didn't stop him. Al managed to make it outside on the sidewalk and was shot a couple more times and he actually died out on the sidewalk, as I recall."

Don Cockell - Gilbert Allnutt, secretary for the Croydon Ex-Boxers Association, , England, sent us a copy of his April, 1 983 most interesting newsletter. is fondly remembered with admiration. (ed. note - Cockell passed away in London on July 17, 1983 after a long bout with cancer). The Croydon Ex-Boxers Association has been in touch with the Cockell family and many sources are getting together to help financially. Write to them at 25 Melrose Avenue, London SW 16, England. Some of Cockell's great bouts: Feb. 27, 1951 - , London KO 1 July 30, 1954 - Harry Matthews, Seatfle KO 8 May 16, 1955 - Marciano, KO by 9 (heavyweight title)

Larry Holmes - Lucien Rodriguez WBC heavyweight championship bout - Scranton, Pa. Art Rust, Jr. (WABC radio N.Y. sports talk show host - "boxing's historic mind") "Total farce." "Holmes fine heavyweight in any era." (ABC radio sports) - "That mess in Scranton."

Remembering Jack Cuddy - (Jack Cuddy died 9-2-75) Mr. Cuddy covered virtually every major fight for the United Press and U.P.I. from 1 932 until his retirement in 1965. Cuddy started his extraordinarily fine newspaper career with the Journal. Jack had also worked for the Daily News, the Daily News and the Item-Tribune. He joined U.P. as night manager in in 1926. Cuddy then transferred to the bureau in 1927. The stories he covered included Charles A. Lindbergh's solo flight over the Atlantic. Cuddy then transferred to the sports department of U.P./U.P.I. in 1 932 Sports fans and boxing people will never forget the wonderful by-line by the name of Jack Cuddy.

Quotes worth re -quoting: "I have always felt that boxing people have the greatest hearts." - Frankie Ryff "The game fish up-stream" - Grantland Rice "Achieve with honor" - Hollywood (Calif.) High School class motto "Joe Louis fought for the title - for the honor - when it was an honor"

7 Some records, from Laurence Fielding: Word has been received from Julius Weiner that Eddie Leonard, a boxer of the 1920's, died May 9, 1983 at George Washington Hospital in Washington. Here is his record, or most of it, and also most of the fights of Tommy Lowe of Washington, compiled with the help of information contained in Bill Schutte's newspaper clippings and reports in the Washington Star and Post. Any additional fights or dates which can be supplied by the members will certainly be appreciated. Some identity problems: In the record of Johnny Haystack (1928 Everlast, page 1146), in his 1927 record, the name "Caveman" Fisher appears, in fights at Syracuse. Also in Osk Till's record, 1929 Everlast page 207. Was this man the same as Young Fisher, who beat , Mike OlDowd, and ? In the record of Andy Tucker (1926 Everlast, page 223) the name Jimmy Burns appears, as losing to Tucker in 1923. Also in the record of Eddie Le Roy (1932 Everlast, page 287), Jimmy Burns losing to him in 1929. A Jimmy Burns appeared in Norfolk, Va. in 1931. The name also appears in the records of Mickey Doyle, George Goldberg, and Mickey Blair. Were these the same as the Jimmy Burns (real name James V. De Fago) whose record appears in the 1943 Ring Record Book, page 83-84 ? In the record of Happy Atherton (1941 RRB, page 53, and 1930 Andrews, page 295), he boxed a draw with a Frankie Murray on Apr. 5, 1929 at San Francisco. The name Frankie Murray also appears in the records of champions (1924), (1923), (1924), and Izzy Schwartz (1925). Were these the same Frankie Murray as the one whose record is in the 1922 Everlast, page 268 ? Also, what was his real name ? In the record of Benny Levine (1931 Everlast, page 228), he met Al Delmont in 1929 and 1928. In 1927 an Al Delmont was kayoed by Bobby Garcia (1943 RRB, page 193). In 1926 Delmont met Joe Glick and Al Gordon. All of these were Newark fights. Going further back, to 1924 and 1923, this name appears in the records of Jack McFarland and Sam MDssberg. It appears in the 1920 records of Mickey Brown and Johnny Reisler. An Al Delmont won over Chick Suggs on Nov. 15, 1918 in 8 rounds at . Can it be, that these Al Delmonts are the same as the one whose record (only up through 1913) is in the 1941 RRB, page 128, or were there two or three different fighters ? In the 1924 record of Sammy Mandell (1982 RRB, page 769) the name Mickey O'Dowd appears. Also in the 1923 record of Ernie Coozeman (1943 RRB, page 216). Is this Mickey OlDowd the same as Midget Mike OlDowd who campaigned in the later 1920's and beat Johnny Datto and Nationalista, and drew with Santiago Zorilla ? In the 1929 record of Tony Herrera (1941 RRB, page 182), he knocked out a man named Ray Rychell on July 1. But in Herrera's record in the 1931 Andrews, page 181, the name is given as Ray Mitchell. So, which is right, Mitchell or Rychell ? It could have been either, as there were fighters boxing under those two names at that time.

Record book discrepancies: In the record of Leo Kid Roy (1941 RRB, page 318) he is shown losing to Jackie Brady on Ear. 1 5, 1929, at New York. This agrees with Roy's record in the 1930 Andrews, page 239, but disagrees with the 1930 Everlast, page 222, which 7ives the name as Irish Bobby Brady. Bobby is probably right, as Jackie would probably have been too big at that time, to be matched with Roy. Jackie Brady's record (1943 RRB, page 89) does not show a win over Roy. Bobby Brady's record (1931 Everlast, page 268) does not show a 1929 win over Roy, but it does show a knockout over Roy in 8 rounds, Aug. 27, 1930, rich is not in Roy's record. BOXING RECORD BOOKS

The Annual Journal featured a comprehensive list of boxing record books published since 1900 compiled by Luckett Davis. David Bloch offers a substantial list of additions to it. He writes:

"Luckett Davis did a fantastic job in listing the record books since 1900. He certainly presented a number of books that were unknown to me, proving that 'two heads are always better than one' In any case, I would like to add my two cents worth by making a few possible corrections and a number of interesting additions."

Possible Corrections:

American Boxing Guide by Graham : I also have an 1980 edition T.S. Andrews Boxing Record: Also published in 1937 Annuario Internazionale: I have a 1957 edition. This MAY be in lieu of the 1959 edition Luckett mentions. Box Brevier: I also have a 1948 edition Continental Boxing Guide: I have a 1958 edition. I THINK this may be the same as Luckett's 1957 edition. King Korn Record Book: One also published in 1983 Ring, Anne de : I also have issues for 1955 and 1956 Ring Digest: I also have a 1951 issue Small Glove News: There was also an issue for 1977. I do not believe there was one issued in 1980. Sporting Life Records to October 1909, published in London: I think it should be to October, 1910. Truth Boxing Year Book: I also have a 1959 edition.

Additional Record Books that have been published, most of which I have:

Australian Ring Digest: 1952,53,55,56,57 Internationale Box-Rekorde to May 1931 by Fred Petermann (German) L'Almanach Du Ring 1945 by Georges Pagnoud (French) Guia Lagunera De Box, Mexico 1954 All Star Sports Record 1919 by Al Spink - mostly boxing records Nordic Record Book by Roger Soderberg: 1969,70,71,72,73 Pacific Northwest Record Book, Bruce Siebol: 1979-82 Boxe, by L' Echo Des Sports, Pierre Bardel: 1942,1943 FT Ft Parade by Al Robinson: 1949 There was also a Welsh Record Book published. I will get the name of that from a friend who has one."

Gilbert Odd adds the following information concerning the Boxing News Annual:

"With George Whiting, a renowned British boxing writer, now deceased unfortunately, we produced The Boxers Annual which was dated 1944/5. This did not contain individual boxers records. In 1945 this idea was sold to the proprietors of Boxing News who published a copy dated for that year. As a result I was invited to join the staff and in 1946 produced a B.N. Annual which contained records. In 1947 I became editor of Boxing News and regularly produced an Annual which has carried on until today."

He also makes these additions to the above list: "A European Boxing Guide was published by Charlie Parish dated 1958/9. Also the Annuaire Du Ring from 1945 to 1959 was published by Georges Denis in and edited by him."

RON ROUSELLE

John Robertson forwards the following on the record of Canadian heavyweight, Ron Rouselle as appeared in the 1981 Ring Record Book. Rouselle's record was listed as 6-6 and his first bout in 1977 as KO by 1 with opponent unknown. In researching the bout in the Globe and Mail for March 8, 1977, Robertson found that the bout occurred on March 7, 1977 at the North York Centennial Centre and was a preliminary to the George Chuvalo - Bob "Pretty Boy" Felstein bout for the Canadian heavyweight title which Chuvalo won by a ninth-round knockout. "In another preliminary, Ron Rouselle of Toronto knocked down Dave Zguda of Buffalo three times in the first minute of the fight for the victory." Thus Rouselle's entry for that bout should read: March 7, 1977 - Dave Zguda, Toronto KO 1

26 ADDITIONS, CORRECTIONS & COMMENTS (from Bob Soderman)

1. In late 1928 (December), Ray Miller knocked out Tommy Grogan at Detroit. Movies of this fight were shown on January 19, 1929 (and for some days thereafter) at a theater in Grand Rapids, . This then, is a film that could be added to the list of films on record. I ran across this while doing research on 's Jan. 1929 fight in Grand Rapids against Battling Levinsky. I had access to microfilm of the Grand Rapids Press for January - .

2. Ran across some data on bantam champ Panama Al Brown, including a 1931 fight not previously shown in Brown's record: Sept. 21, 1931 - Ginger Jones, Mountain Ash, KO 9. Also, Brown's Mar. 31, 1931 opponent's first name is Douglas Parker and his AFT-. 13, 1931 bout vs. Jack Garland ( W 15 for Brown) took place in Manchester, England - not London. I got this data out of a 1932 edition of the Manchester Sporting Chronicle, which contained a chronological listing of boxing results from around the world

3. Additions to record of Johnny Wilson (bouts not listed in 1982 Ring, but in 1927 Everlast): Apr. 30, 1926 - Tony Clatin, Worcester W 8 June 10, 1926 - Rocky Marion, Richmond, Va KO 5 Sept. 24, 1926 - Chief Halbran, Stamford KO 4

4. Add one fight to record of Bushy Graham: July 8, 1921 - Bobby Micheals (sic), New York...K0 by 4

5. Previously un -recorded fights for Johnny Dundee, Rocky and Bud Taylor - all in 1922 and obtained from study of Chicago Tribune microfilms for that year: Dec. 14, 1922 - Johnny Dundee beat Gene Delmont, New York W 12 Dec. 15, 1922 - Rocky Kansas beat Johnny Donnelly, Erie, Pa. W 8 Dec. 22, 1922 - Pal Moore beat Bud Taylor, Chicago.... W 10

6. Unrecorded fights for two more champions: Oct. 9, 1922 - Charlie O'Connell beat , Buffalo....W 10 Oct. 13, 1922 - Young Sharkey stopped Benny Bass, Phila KO 1

7. Additional bout for Jock Malone not listed in his record in 1982 Ring Record Book: He fought the 6 round main event in Chicago, on Friday, June 27, 1930, winning a close decision from Benny "Kid" Stanley, Kansas City Negro. This is the same Benny Stanley that he beat in 10 rounds at Davenport on June 20, 1928. It is more than likely that Malone fought other bouts in 1930 (besides the March 17 vs. Gorilla Jones). Maybe someone could go thru microfilms of and St. Paul newspapers to track these down.

Julius Weiner has put together the following list of people with boxing experience who became famous in other disciplines.
