Hank's love for our boxing "dodge" stands out in every note he writes. Kaplan, chock full of info, tells us Tom Heeney visited Hank at his home. Always loves seeing Tom. "Heeney, now 84, is in good shape only somewhat forgetful, expectedly so, considering the tough battles he was in." Al "Bummy" Davis - Hank Kaplan notes Davis was killed in a bar - stick - up. Sports historian James Bus wrote, "Recalling the date around November 20, 1945, Al Davis was killed (shot) in a tavern. Actually he was in a bar/tavern operated by a friend of his, when two hoods came in and held up the place. Bummy, being a boxer, was ready to take the two guys on with his bare fists. As you know, fists can't match bullets. As I recall, Davis was shot a couple of times inside the bar. But that didn't stop him. Al managed to make it outside on the sidewalk and was shot a couple more times and he actually died out on the sidewalk, as I recall." Don Cockell - Gilbert Allnutt, secretary for the Croydon Ex-Boxers Association, London, England, sent us a copy of his April, 1 983 most interesting newsletter. Don Cockell is fondly remembered with admiration. (ed. note - Cockell passed away in London on July 17, 1983 after a long bout with cancer).
