III Grammar

Countable and Non-countable nouns - Expressions of Quantity

1. Count and Non-count What is a countable noun? Give examples. A noun in front of which you can put a number. You can count this type of noun. Example: two towers, three chairs, ten glasses. What is a non-countable noun? Give examples. A noun in front of which you cannot put a number. This type of nouns cannot take a plural form. Non-count nouns can be broken down in 5 subcategories

 Liquids: water, petrol, coffee, beer etc.  Ground things: corn, wheat, sugar, flour  Mass nouns: bread, grass etc.  Abstract notions: love, happiness, hope etc.  Tricky nouns: time, money

To complete the explanation, please note that the English language allows speakers to talk about 1 unit, even with non-count nouns. You can use “extractors”: A glass of water, a cup of tea A loaf of bread A blade of grass A glimpse of hope, a piece of advice

Regarding what I labelled ‘tricky nouns’, bear in mind that ‘money’ and ‘time’ are naturally associated with numbers or digits in people’s mind. Still, they are non- count nouns. You cannot say ‘I have 2 time’ or She earns 3 money’.

4

Time is even trickier, as we have the word TIMES, to count the number of occurrences of an event, and TIMES is countable. So watch out for context.
