Workshop Capabilities

Ninety-nine percent of our framing work is done in-house and does not leave the building until it goes home with you when it is finished. Any pieces requiring out-of-house services are hand delivered to ensure the safety of the work.

We are able to accommodate most large-scale works that need mounting, framing or stretching.

-We have a 4’ x 8’ vacuum press, and utilize a variety of mounting methods: vacuum mounting, fabric mounting, dry mounting, and reversible dry mounting.

-Stretcher bars are purchased in 10’ lengths and are assembled in the same way we assemble our frames. This allows standard and odd-sized stretchers to be made with ease, accuracy, and stability.

-We regularly stock oversized mounting boards and can easily cut them down to meet your needs. -Archival 4ply rag board available in many colors up to 40”x60” and in white up to 48”x96” -Gator Foam in 3/16” & 1/2” thicknesses in black and white up to 48”x96” -Foam core in 3/16” & 1/2” thicknesses in black and white up to 48”x96”

-Our workshop staff is also proficient in building custom shadow boxes for more sculptural works, and can even internally light the piece for a self-contained display.

-Our Wizard Computerized Mat Cutter allows us to cut mats quickly (often while you wait), and gives the capability to cut more complex mats with multiple or decoratively shaped openings.

Scheduling & Turn-Around Times Custom work is often difficult to schedule, due to unforeseen problems that may arise. Work is tentatively scheduled to give you an approximate date of completion and should not be considered binding. All work is done in the same order in which it is received. RUSH orders are assessed a surcharge to cover overtime labor. So that you may plan ahead, please allow two weeks for work to be completed.

2 Custom Framing

Riverside Art has over four-thousand available mouldings with prices starting as low as $3 per foot, so cus- tom framing does not have to be expensive. Our services are completely à la carte and we can do as much or as little work as you want us to.

If you have four or more items of the same size and are receiving the exact same treatment, at the same time, they receive a 10% discount. Ten or more items receive a 20% discount. Twenty-five or more, discounts are by quote.

Wizard Express Creative Matting Service Since 1995 Riverside Art has been using the Wizard Computerized Matting System. We were one of the first frame shops in New England to embrace and offer this technology to our customers. From a select assortment of pre-cut mat boards, we can cut a specific sized opening (or even multiple open- ings) while you wait. In most cases, for less than the price of a pre-packaged commercial mat, we can offer variety and custom quality at the speed and convenience of an “off the rack” purchase. Choices must be made from our pre-selected assortment of thousands of mats. Quantities over 12 mats may need to be scheduled. Our price is based on the price of the mat board (see Below) plus $2.00 per opening up to 16x20--$5 for larger sizes.

Bring in your artwork and frame if you’d like, and match everything up for a custom framed look. These prices are for Wizard Express Matting Services and do not apply to any custom framing order.

Raw Materials for DIY Framing If you are the handy type who likes to do your own framing and just need the basic materials, we’ve got you covered. Raw materials such as lengths of moulding, full sheets of mat and mounting boards, wire, tape, etc are all available for purchase. Moulding and matting are ordered weekly; simply let us know what you need and we will do what we can to accommodate you. Quantity discounts are by individual quotes only.

Reuse and Recycle Already have a frame? No problem. We often refit old frames with your new work. We can even cut down the frames if they are the wrong size.

Kits Some of our custom mouldings are also available as kits. This is a great option for metal-sectional frames, as they are easily assembled at home. Since this reduces our labor time, kits qualify for a discount off of the per-foot cost. Prices vary. Limited to metal sectional frames only.

7 Scanner Pricing

Basic scanning is $17 per square foot, with a minimum of 1 square foot.

SIZE: COST: 8x10 $17 This pricing structure is based on a straightfor- ward scan, with no special lighting consider- 12x16 $22.67 ations or set up. 16x20 $37.78 18x24 $51 (Enhancing the texture of a painting, picking up subtle paper texture, or scanning a 3-di- 24x36 $102 mensional object requires additional set up 30x40 $142 and scanning time, and will increase the price 36x48 $204 of the service.) 48x72 $408

Things to Consider:

-Our scanner can capture a piece using a variety of lighting angles. While most pieces look just fine with a straight scan using both lights, some pieces can benefit from a different lighting setup.

-Directional lighting works well in any situation where you may want to enhance texture or cast a shadow on 3-dimensional elements.

-Works larger than 48x72 are scanned with multiple passes and require extra tech time to combine the files.

9 A Visual Comparison

Riverside Art’s in-house Cruse Scanner has the newest and most accurate optics/color profiles to date. In the following color patches, compare the accuracy of the old configuration with the new!

In the examples, you’ll notice a series of colored squares, some with circles in the center of them. The squares are a standardized set of colors that are used to determine how accuratly the scanner is reading them. When a color is not accurately read, in this example, it appears as a circle in the center of the square.

As you’ll notice there are significantly more inaccurate readings with the old configuration than the new.

What does all this mean for you? Well...

-the more accurate the scan, the less time we have to spend color correcting the file in PhotoShop, and printing proofs to compare to the original.

-with a more efficient workflow, productivity increases and you get a faster turn-around time.

10 OLD Configuration

NEW Configuration Fine Art Reproductions - Step By Step Process

Three Main Steps:

Digitization of Images…done one of two ways

1. Provided by Riverside Art, Ltd -Service is provided for a fee, and is based on the size of the original

2.Done by the artist with the following requirements -Image must be at least 250dpi at size, but no more than 600dpi -TIFF is the preferred file format, but PDF, JPG, EPS formats are acceptable -The file color space should be in Adobe RGB 1998 (files can be converted by Riverside if necessary) -Files are printed as-is. A labor charge will be assessed for needed adjustments above and beyond basic file manipulation or color adjustment.

Because the overall quality of a reproduction is ultimately limited by the quality of the image file, any custom- er-provided file must be reviewed prior to printing.

Proofing We will provide a printed proof on your chosen substrate(s) for approval. If you decline to review a printed proof, you will be responsible and charged for any technical time and/or materials, regardless of the outcome of the final print.

Because the reproductions are produced using the CMYK four-color printing process. This process has inherent limitations—especially when attempting to match florescent, metallic or iridescent paints—and can result in minor shifts in color.

* Riverside Art, Ltd reserves the right to limit the number of printed proofs made.

Printing…done one of two ways 1. All prints in an edition are printed at once.

2. Individual prints in edition printed on demand, as needed *This option might be less cost-effective, as there are discounts associated with volume printing.

12 Things to consider:

Substrate -What kind of substrate do you want your reproductions printed on? -What is appropriate for the original medium, e.g., printing a reproduction of a watercolor on watercolor paper, but not on canvas?

Size -How large or small do you want your reproductions to be? -Reproductions can scale your large paintings or drawings down to a more manageable size, for a wider audience. -Do you need some larger focal points for an exhibit that is comprised primarily of smaller works? -Depending on the original size and quality of the digital file, it may not be possible to enlarge smaller pieces beyond a certain size.

Edition Type (Do you want to edition your prints?) -Limited Edition: where you limit the numbers of prints made of each image. -Open Edition: where you allow an unlimited number of prints to be made. -Hand Embellished: where you draw or paint back onto the print for a hand finished look.

Edition Size -How many prints do you want in the edition? -Do you want multiple editions of the same image, each printed at a different size? Or printed on a different medium?

Presentation -How will your reproductions be presented? -Do you want a framed or matted sample?

Will you stretch your canvases yourself? -Will you need us to cut stretchers? -Did you know we carry a wide selection of standard sized stretchers in our Supplies department?

Additional / Optional Steps Offered by Riverside Art: framing matting shrink wrapping stretching canvas

*Please see the Framing section for more details.

Gifts We know you’re busy, and sometimes you just don’t have time to make that handmade gift. But just because you didn’t make it, it doesnt mean that gift has to be a mass-produced item from a big-box store. Riverside Art’s Mariette Gallery has a wide variety of handmade items by artisans from around the country and from within your community! From a selection of pottery, blown glass, turned wood, and handcrafted jewelry (just to name a few), we are certain you’ll find something unique and memorable.

Gallery Due to the limited wall space of our gallery, we are unable to take on consignment work from most artists. The work you see on the walls was made by current or past employees of Riverside Art as way to show you what the staff is up to when they are not at Riverside.

Community However, we still try to find ways to help support our customers and our extended arts community. Riverside Art has a large customer base that ranges from students to artists to collectors, and everyone inbetween. We hope that this page will help foster new relationships among our different customers, which otherwise may not have met. To that end, our redesigned website has an expanded community section where the following sections are listed:

Classes Individuals and organizations may list any classes offered here.

Artists For Hire Our customers are often in search of an artist who can do a custom piece for a special gift. Let us know what you do! Portraiture (people, pets), Landscape (with houses, boats), Calligraphy, Sign Painting, etc.

Local Art Organizations List your organization and help build your creative community! There are many people who are looking to get involved with the arts and often want to join a local art association or group. Here is a chance to expand your membership and audience!

We get asked about these things all the time and we always point to this page on our site first. Email us if you’d like to list your class, available services, or arts organization. [email protected]
