The (Old) Luster Parish Register contains the following: "Ragnhild Olsdotter, born out of wedlock by bachelor Ole Johannesen Borlaug from Leikanger Parish, and maiden Martha Halvorsdotter Faaberg in Vigdal." Witnesses at the christening were Johannes Thomassen Kilen (1823-1903), Guttorm Guttormsen Kilen (1837-1876), Kari Olsdotter Dalsøren, Synneva Olsdotter Kilen (1836- 1911) and Martha Larsdotter Faaberg. Ragnhild was not Christened at home after the birth. The birth out of wedlock was reported to the minister by the crofter Johannes Thomassen Kilen (1823-1903). As far as is known, this was the first child born out of wedlock by either parent.

Ragnhild was probably born on the Vigdal farm (#36), the home of Ole Olson Haugen (1825-1910) and Torborg Halvorsdotter Faaberg (1832-1892), Ragnhild's mother's sister. The 1865 Census of Luster recorded Ragnhild Olsdotter as the "foster child" of Ole Olson and Torborg Halvorsdotter.

In 1865,the Vigdal farm was a part of the Dale church area. However, about 100 years ago, the Vigdal farm was, for practical and geographic reasons (accessability), transfered to the Gaupne church area.

Ragnhild "Wigdahl", age 2, from Luster, emigrated from the Port of Bergen, on 23 April 1867, aboard the ship "Claus Heftye". The ship landed at Quebec, Canada on 28 May 1867. Ragnhild was accompanied by her mother "Marthe Halversdatter Faaberg, age 25, Ole Olson Wigdahl (age 41) & wife Thorborg (age 35) and their children Ole (age 13) and Eli (age 5); Rasmus Olsen Wigdahl (age 22), Sjur Anderson Faaberg (age 30), and Marthe Hansdotter Faaberg (age33), all from Luster.

After the death of her mother in September 1869, Nellie went to live with her Uncle Ole Flatjord, and his wife Torborg Halvorsdotter Haugen, near Jerico, Jacksonville Township, Chickasaw County, Iowa.

Nellie and Jens were married by D.B. Sneden, JP; witnesses were James & Cari Otteson. After 1886 Nellie gave birth to an un- named female who died in infancy. On 30 Nov 1888 Nellie gave birth to an un-named son who died in infancy, Dr. Ira K. Gardiner recorded her maiden name as Nellie Oleson Flatis.

In June 1915 Nellie was treated in the Mayo Clinic for mild anemia. In July 1920 she was again admitted to the Mayo Clinic for a pain in her arm which followed the flu. In April 1921 she was again admitted to the Mayo Clinic.

Nellie is the Grandmother of James H. Johnson, the compiler of this family history.

Nellie OLSON was born in Norway, February 2, 1865. When a very small child she came to this country with her parents. Shortly after their arrival her parents both died leaving her an orphan at an early age. She was reared in the home of an uncle, Ole Flatjord, of Crane Creek. Her early education was received in the schools of this county. On January 6, 1886, she became the bride of James JOHNSON of New Hampton, who died January 22, 1931. Five children were born to them; one son and one daughter preceded their mother in death. Those who survive are John of Oakland, California, Harold of Columbus, Ohio, and Mildred at home. Besides her children she is survived by one grandson, James, of Columbus, Ohio.

Following her marriage the family lived on a farm near New Hampton, later moving to this city. Mrs. JOHNSON was a member of the Crane Creek Lutheran church. She was a faithful worker in the Women's Relief Corps of this city. She was a devoted wife and mother, a kind neighbor and a true friend. By these qualities she had endeared herself to all whose lives she touched. Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 7, at 1 o'clock, at the home and 2:00 o'clock at the Crane Creek Lutheran church. Rev. H.M. Finstad conducted the services.

Members of the Martha Mission furnished music for the service at the home. Burial was made in the Crane Creek cemetery. Those from out of town who attend the funeral were Mrs. Nels JOHNSON, Mrs. Nordine TORGERSON, Mr. and Mrs. Wallace JOHNSON and Mr. and Mrs. Edwin JOHNSON, all of Adams, Minnesota.

In memory of MRS. JAMES JOHNSON we extend our deepest sympathy to all who mourn the death of Mrs. JOHNSON. In the passing of Mrs. James JOHNSON we feel the loss of an estimable woman, neighbor and friend whose kind words and deeds endeared her to all with whom she met. Her cheerful conversation was always an uplift to Mrs. MILLS. Mrs. JOHNSON was at all times just her self "Nellie", a person of rare integrity. For more than a half century we have heartily enjoyed "Nellie" as best of friends. Mills family.

Again the Master beckoned and one of our faithful sisters heard the call and gently her spirit winged its way to Him who gave it. She was faithful to every trust and down through the years her untiring labor in behalf of the Relief corps will stand as a monument to her memory. The tender sympathy of this Women's Relief corps, A.P. Morton post, No 69, is extended to her sons and daughter. Not dead, but only promoted. She has entered the Order above, And there 'neath the smiles of the Master, She will finish her labors of love. The next regular meeting of the Corps will be Tuesday, July 14th. --Mable Thorson, Press Cor.
