HOME IMPROVEMENT FUNDS AVAILABLE FROM

THE TOWNSHIP OF MAPLEWOOD

Now is a good time to start planning ahead for Spring and Summer home improvements. The Maplewood Affordable Housing Program (MAHP) assists homeowners in the Township with eligible repairs or replacement of major systems including roof, electrical safety upgrades, heating, plumbing, sanitary plumbing, weatherization (energy efficient windows, insulation, etc) and/or structural repairs. Assistance is provided in the form of a ten-year, interest free, forgivable loan up to $20,000 per dwelling unit. There is no interest charged. There is no monthly payment. There is no cost to apply and it does not affect your credit score.

Mayor DeLuca encourages homeowners to “Take the first step by checking if you may be eligible for program assistance to accomplish your home renovations”. CGP&H, a consulting firm specializing in affordable housing programs, administers the program for the Township. CGP&H’s professional inspectors work with program participants to identify needed repairs and to monitor construction completion. The program has renovated 47 homes in Maplewood with program funds thus far. Why not see if you can get assistance too? Homeowners should go to www.cgph.net for more program information including income guidelines. If you have additional questions and to get placed in the program’s applicant pool, email [email protected] or call Mary Alice at 609-664-2781. The maximum allowable income ranges from $50,744 for a one-person household to $95,689 for an eight-person household. Your financial information is kept confidential. Funds are provided on a first-come first–served basis until all funds are expended. Contact CGP&H for rental property terms.

Local general contractors are encouraged to get an application for construction opportunities at www.cgph.net.

SNOW REMOVAL TIPS

Plan ahead when snow is on the way. Remove all cars from the street. Do not shovel your driveway apron until you are sure the plows are finished plowing the street. Always pile the snow behind the curb. Never throw snow in front of the curb because this only assures that the plow will plow it back in or create an unsafe road condition. Depositing snow from the sidewalk or driveway in to the road way is illegal. If you see a salt truck or plow truck driving behind you let them pass you so they can clear the way for you and open the roadways quicker.

Maplewood Municipal Alliance Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention

The Maplewood Municipal Alliance helps fund programs and education directed towards preventing alcohol and drug abuse. The programs and education are primarily directed towards school age youth. The Alliance is funded through a grant from the NJ State Governors Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse.

Programs currently funded in part by the Alliance are the fifth grade DARE program supplies, The Middle School after school recreation and enrichment programs, Columbia High School orientation materials, and Police Outreach Education at CHS, and the high school graduation program, Midnight Madness. Other educational programs such as Red Ribbon Week are sponsored. The Maplewood Municipal Alliance envisions a community that promotes wellness and the mental, social and physical health of its community members, by fostering an environment that is free of the misuse and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other illicit drugs.

The Alliance Committee currently consists of a Township Committee person, Health Officer, Police, Parenting Center and School Guidance Counselors. We would welcome citizen volunteers with an interest in helping plan programs with the Alliance. Contact the Township Clerk's office for a Township Volunteer form. Questions can be directed to the Health Officer at 973-762-8120 x4400.

Responsible Pet Ownership

As per Township Ordinance, Dog and Cat licenses are due for renewal in December of each year. As per NJ State regulation, the rabies vaccination for dogs must be good through September of the licensing year, so this means September of 2014. Starting Feb. 1st a $7.00 late fee will be charged.

Spaying and neutering of pets is an important part of responsible pet care. Do not feed stray cats as this leads to large cat colonies. Feeding of stray cats is in violation of the Code of the Township of Maplewood. The Health Dept. urges you to be a responsible pet owner and if you want a cat as a pet, you should take full care of the cat, get it vaccinated against rabies, licensed, and spayed/neutered and it should be welcome into your house.

Gladys Grauer has been called the "Mother" of Newark's African American art community. She is best known for her tapestries and corrugated constructions made from discarded and repurposed materials. The materials are allegorical to the people and subjects that the artist- activist champions.

Grauer says: "Homeless people take cardboard and make shelters; they take plastic bags and make rain hats or boots, they take old stuff and make it something good.”

She has been a teacher, a mentor and an inspiration for artist in Newark for generations. In 1971 she opened the first African American art gallery in the city. Her works are on permanent display in major collections such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the National Museum of American Art in Washington, the Museum of Modern Art New York and the Newark Museum, among others. In 2013 she completed her fourth major mural commission titled "A Tribute to Newark Jazz Clubs."

“You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have.” Maya Angelou

Durand-Hedden house and Garden

Maplewood’s historic house museum, located in Grasmere Park at 523 Ridgewood Road, offers a wide array of monthly programs that explore our area’s local and natural history. Events take place from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sundays. Check durandhedden.org or call 973-763-7712 for exact times and locations. January 26 Irene’s Legacy: A Taste of History at the Open Hearth

Skilled 18th century cook Mercy Ingraham returns to the kitchen fire at the Durand-Hedden House this year as we honor our late longtime trustee Irene Kosinski. Irene, a gifted educator and lover of living history, oversaw the restoration of Durand-Hedden’s beehive oven in 1981. She went on to establish our perpetually popular open hearth cooking program, which for thirty years has drawn visitors who are ‘hungry’ for history. Mercy (a Charter Member of the Historic Foodways Society of the Delaware Valley) last cooked with Irene in 2011 and will reprise that day’s show-stopping fowl-on-a-string, this time, a duck, and preserved foods from the fall harvest. In addition she will prepare two of Irene’s favorite teaching lessons -- beaten biscuits using the reflector oven and Johnny cake, in the Dutch oven, plus seasonal recipes of her own.

Children will be able to try their hand at old-fashioned cooking chores like kneading dough and making butter. The intriguing exhibit Where Can I Mail a Letter, The History of Maplewood’s Postal Service will be on view.

February 23 The Maplewood Theater: Its Forgotten Saga

Most Maplewoodians catching the latest movie at their village six-plex have no idea that the theater in actuality has a long theatrical history dating back to 1927. Beginning life as one of the largest combined vaudeville/movie houses in New Jersey, the Maplewood theater struggled along for a decade before becoming the setting for a series of highly popular summer stock shows featuring a myriad of major Broadway and stars including Helen Hayes, , Tallulah Bankhead, Paul Robeson and “Maplewood’s Own,” Teresa Wright. Legendary Tony Award winning producer made Maplewood her theatrical home for three years in the 1940’s and launched her successful version of Porgy and Bess in this very theater on Maplewood Avenue. After another brief stint with legitimate theater in the early 1950’s, the Maplewood Theater settled back into being a popular neighborhood movie house, which evolved into multiple theaters in 1988.

Extensive research has located drawings and photographs of the original Pompeian themed interior, productions photos and playbills from the live show era, early movie memorabilia including a Wurlitzer theater organ console, staff photos from the 1970’s, and more.

March 30 Someone Must Wash the Dishes: An Anti-Suffrage Satire

Pro-Suffragist Marie Jenney Howe wrote this tongue-in-cheek caricature, Someone Must Wash the Dishes in 1912, eight years before women won the vote. Titled “An Anti-Suffrage Monologue,” it was published in 1913, by the National American Woman Suffrage Association (precursor of the League of Women Voters).

Reviewers have called the production being performed for Durand-Hedden during Woman’s History Month, and directed by the late Warren Kliewer, “wicked” in its wit. Michele LaRue’s performance has been labeled “side-splitting.” An Illinois native, now based in New York, LaRue is a professional actress who tours nationally with a repertoire of shows by turn-of-the- previous century American writers.
