VILLAGE HALL NEWS: I am pleased to report that Spring has been another active time for our regular groups. Now that the better weather has arrived (don’t blame me if it’s raining when you read this) why not pop along to the activity that you have been thinking about having a go at and actually try it out. All of our groups are run by enthusiastic leaders and you will, I’m sure, be made most welcome by everyone. Since our last edition I am delighted to say that two new groups meet at the hall, the Friends of Manningham Wood and U3A Ladies Canasta Club. We are very pleased to have them and hope they have fully settled in and are enjoying using the facilities. I am also pleased to report that 1st Illogan Scouts have started a Beaver Colony. At the time of writing there are still a few places left, so if you want to bag a place for your 5¾ - 8yr old child please contact Steve (Sec. 1st Illogan) on 843845. There are also a few spaces available for Cubs (8 - 10 ½ yrs). The first 3 weeks are free. So why not give it a go? Looking ahead the “youthy” group will be completing work on the community garden project over the summer and of course we are very much looking forward to the Illogan Parish Show in July when the Village Hall and many of our regular users will be playing a full and active part. Bish Bash Bosh – The Tin Violin I am delighted to announce that Dean Nolan will be bringing his version of Alan M Kent’s play The Tin Violin to Illogan Village Hall on Friday 15th June. Phone Box Office (843845) to reserve tickets for this incredibly moving true story. Always looking for help! If your new years resolution was to do something for the community then why not offer to help run the Village Hall or one of the many voluntary groups who are based here and who are only successful because of the kind support and generosity of people just like you. If you have a little time and would like to help to run an activity or think you could support one of them in some other way then please pop along to their session or give their main contact a call. Q: Doctor, before you performed your last autopsy, did you check for a pulse? A: No. Q: So did you check for blood pressure? A: No. Q: What about a check for breathing? A: No. Q: So then, it is possible that the patient could have been alive when you began the autopsy? A: No. Q: But how can you be so sure, Doctor? A: Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar. Q: Yes, but could the patient have still been alive, nevertheless? A: Yes, possible I suppose, but if alive, could only function as a politician!

With Summer upon us, (so we are told) and the barbeques come out of the garage, the rust gets wire brushed off and you nip out to buy new tools because the old ones are beyond hope, remember this bit of Latin: Animadvertistine, ubicumque stes, fumum recta in faciem ferri? Which translates to : Ever noticed how, wherever you stand, the smoke goes right into your face?

Ever wondered how (Cornish: Krows Karworgi) got its name? The village is situated west of . Here’s the most popular 3 possibilities. Each version agrees that the name comes from the name of a coach/post house or inn. The name cannot be traced earlier than the 19th century. The inn was built on a plot of land known as White Splat in the late 18th century. The Indian Queen Inn stood beside the road leading from Goss Moor to Fraddon, just below the top of the hill. The pub had a small porch and displayed as a sign the portrait of an Indian queen. An inscription on the porch told the story of a Portuguese princess who landed at Falmouth in packet days, and slept one night at this inn on her way to London. Her swarthy appearance gave onlookers the impression that she was an Indian. It has also been suggested that the royal lady was Pocahontas (1595–1617), an American Indian who was the younger daughter of Powhatan, chief of the Indian tribes who lived along the Virginia coast. There is very little evidence to support this story; nevertheless, it is still commonly given as the origin of the name. Pocahontas's name has been given to a modern street in Indian Queens known as Pocahontas Crescent. Up to April 1780, the inn had the name "The Queen's Head". Sometime thereafter, and definitely by 1787, it had become "The Indian Queen". It seems that the name became "The Indian Queens" around the end of the 18th century. The signboard displayed an American Indian on one side and Victoria as Queen of India on the other. (Queen Victoria reigned 1837–1901; from 1877 she was Empress of India.) The pub was demolished in the 1960s and its old signboard resides in the Truro Museum. In 2009 the old stone lintel from the pub re-appeared on a house in Indian Queens not far from the site of the original pub.

Garden designer Elizabeth Murray said: Gardening is the art that uses flowers and plants as paint, and the soil and sky as canvas.

How do you know that you are a Master Gardener? There is a decorative compost container in your kitchen . You would rather go to a garden center to shop than a clothing store. You prefer gardening to watching television and you plan holiday trips around arboretums and public parks.
