Backmann, was a throwback to an age when going to the theater was an event in itself.

Over the years, the Lebowsky Center has made memories in live performance theatre and film and has been an ingrained part of the Owosso community. One would be hard-pressed to find someone who didn’t have a memory of a movie or show, a first date or a first kiss, in the Lebowsky Center. The Owosso Community Players began performances in the Lebowsky Center in 1991, bringing professional-quality community theatre to the historic stage.

Tragically, a devastating fire ravaged the Lebowsky Center in 2007, leaving little hope The Lebowsky Center in Owosso of restoration at the time and putting the future of the Owosso Community Players in question. A group of dedicated supporters, volunteers and community leaders weren’t content to let the Lebowsky Center fade away, and undertook a campaign to Rebuild the landmark theatre with a grand re-opening in May, 2014, as the Shiawassee Center for the Performing Arts.

The newly rebuilt theatre is a LEED-Silver certified energy-efficient, 500-seat theatre featuring cutting edge technology and modern design with an atmosphere of the original old-time theatre, worthy of a night out on the town. Not only is the center the anchor of the blooming downtown Owosso entertainment district and a cultural destination for visitors more than an hour away, it is also a resource for the community for cultural and performing arts education.

The Owosso Community Players produce more than 10 shows per year, from comedies and dramas to grandiose musicals, in the Voight Performance Hall and the adjoining Studio Theatre. In addition, the Shiawassee Center for the Performing Arts is also host to nearly 25 dates for community groups, touring acts and other events, and is an ideal setting for weddings, fundraisers, or other gatherings.

More information on the Owosso Community Players, the Shiawassee Center for the Performing Arts and the unbelievable Rebuild campaign can be found at www.owossoplayers.com.

Steam Railroading Institute puts Pere Marquette 1225 Back on the Tracks After almost five years of being “out of steam,” the world famous steam engine, Pere Marquette (PM) 1225, returned to the tracks sponsored by the Steam Railroading Institute (SRI) in Owosso, Michigan. The long awaited return came just in time for 1225 to pull the popular North Pole Express Christmas excursions to the Christmas Village in Ashley, Michigan.

The PM 1225 has undergone a federally mandated 15 year overhaul of the entire engine. This was an extremely timely and expensive ($800,000) project which could not have been achieved without the support of donors from all over the world and without the overwhelming support of SRI volunteers. The rebuild project consisted of replacing 90% of the firebox, all of the washout plugs, the floor of the cab, and most of the plumbing. To date, the boiler work is complete, all appliances have been inspected and the work crews are completing the final jacketing of the engine. The work is about 99% complete, but there is still much to do to be ready for the upcoming Train Expo 2014: Locomotives, Wings and Wheels, which will be held on Pere Marquette 1225 June 20-22, 2014.

The Pere Marquette 1225 was used as a model for the animated feature film “The Polar ExpressTM” and continues to draw attention from train lovers everywhere. The 1225 has been a favorite for photographers around the world and “The North Pole Express” excursions, that start every year in November and continue through the Christmas holidays, have provided families with unforgettable experiences and memories that will last a lifetime. Steam engines have been a part of American life for many decades and SRI’s goal is to prevent them from dying out completely. To hear that spectacular whistle, to see the smoke and lights, and to feel the earth vibrate under your feet from this massive locomotive, is truly something everyone should have the chance to experience.

The Steam Railroading Institute (SRI) is dedicated to educating the public about steam era railroading. SRI’s mission is to preserve the knowledge, skills and technology involved with the maintenance and operation of steam locomotives and to educate the public about the enormous impact these machines had in the economic development of Owosso, Michigan, the Great Lakes Region and the nation.

To learn more and find out how you can assist in keeping this incredible piece of history alive, visit www.michigansteamtrain.com and www.project1225.org. SRI’s Visitor Center & Museum offers visitors a firsthand look at the intricacies of working steam locomotives and the equipment needed for their operation. SRI is located in Owosso, Michigan approximately 30 miles northeast of Lansing and 30 miles west of Flint. www.shiawassee.org 13 2014 CALENDAR OF EVENTS MARCH JULY OCTOBER (CONT.) 15 Owosso – Kid Concert for Nature with Joe Reilly, Owosso – Saturday racing at Owosso Speedway The Capitol Bowl, 989-725-7717 DeVries Nature Conservancy, 989-723-3365 www.owossospeedway.com www.capitolbowl.net 4 Corunna – All day Corunna 4th of July Celebration 10 Owosso – Friday Night Car Cruise, Downtown APRIL McCurdy Park, fireworks at dusk, 989-723-1166 Owosso, Chamber of Commerce, 989-494-3344 Owosso – Garlic Mustard Pulls, Saturdays in April, 4 Durand – 4th of July Parade, 989-288-3715 11 Owosso – Shiawassee Harvest Festival, Downtown, DeVries Nature Conservancy, 989-723-3365 11 Owosso – Friday Night Car Cruise, Downtown 989-723-5149 16 Perry – Easter EGGstravanganza, Veterans Park Owosso, 989-494-3344 16 Durand – Fall Raffle, Durand Union Station, Pavilion, 517-625-6155 x235 11-13 Elsie – Elsie Dairy Festival, www.elsiedairyfest.com 989-288-3561 19 Corunna – Easter Egg Hunt and Breakfast with 11 Owosso – Camp Out at DeVries Nature Conservancy, 25 Owosso – Fall Hayride, DeVries Nature Conservancy, the Bunny, 989-277-8592 989-723-3365 989-723-3365 26 Durand – Hometown Celebration, Durand Chamber 12 Byron – Family Fun Day & Fireworks, Byron Chamber of Commerce, 989-288-3715 of Commerce, 810-266-4892 NOVEMBER 26 Owosso – Farmers Market Block Party, 26 Laingsburg – Pancake Breakfast – Downtown Owosso – 43rd Annual State Women’s 600 Club Downtown Owosso, 989-413-3728 Laingsburg, 517-651-6101 Tournament, November 1-2, 8-9 & 15-16 27 Owosso – Cruise to the Castle, 989-494-3344 The Capitol Bowl, 989-725-7717 MAY www.capitolbowl.net 1 Durand – Holiday Market at Durand Union Station, Owosso – Racing every Saturday at Owosso AUGUST 989-288-3561 Speedway, www.owossospeedway.com Owosso – Saturday racing at Owosso Speedway, 11 County-wide Veterans Day Parade 8 Owosso – DeVries Nature Conservancy Garlic www.owossospeedway.com 15-30 Owosso – 26th Annual Holiday at the Shiawassee Mustard Festival, held at Wrought Iron Grill, 1 Owosso – Friday Night Car Cruise, Downtown Arts Center, 989-723-8354 989-723-3365 Owosso, 989-494-3344 28 Owosso – Glow Owosso Kickoff with Glow Parade 9 Owosso – Friday Night Car Cruise, Downtown 5 Perry – National Night Out, 517-625-6155 x235 Downtown, 989-413-3728 Owosso, 989-494-3344 3-9 Corunna – SHIAWASSEE COUNTY FAIR – 28 Durand – Santa Event at the Durand Depot 8-11 Laingsburg – Lions Springtime Festival, Fairgrounds, 989-743-3611 989-288-3561 517-675-5552 10 Owosso – 10th Annual Bike Festival – Antique Bike 10 Corunna – City Garage Sale & Spring Craft Bazaar, Show & Ride, House of Wheels, 989-725-8373 DECEMBER 989-277-8592 10 Durand – Alumni Art Show Opening, Durand Union Durand – Wine Tasting & Holiday Dinner, 15-18 Durand – Durand Railroad Days Festival, Station Ballroom, 989-288-3561 (call for dates), Durand Union Station, 989-288-3561 989-288-4080 12 Owosso – Meteor Shower Star Party, DeVries Nature 1-30 Durand – Tuesday thru Sunday – Tree Viewing at 17 Owosso – Survival Day at DeVries Nature Conservancy, 989-723-3365 Durand Depot, 989-288-3561 Conservancy, 989-723-3365 23-24 Owosso – Tour Your Own Town Event, 989-723-1199 1-31 Owosso – 26th Annual Holiday at the Shiawassee 16-18 Perry – Community Wide Sidewalk & Yard Sales, 30 Durand – End of Summer Cruisin’ Car Show, Arts Center, 989-723-8354 517-625-6155 x235 989-288-3715 5 Byron – Christmas in the Village, Byron Chamber 18 Owosso – 7th Annual Mid-Michigan Custom of Commerce, 810-266-4892 Car Show, 989-666-3107 SEPTEMBER 5 Corunna – Parade of Lights – Opening Festival of 24 Perry – Memorial Day Parade, 517-625-6155 x235 Owosso – Saturday racing at Owosso Speedway, Trees, Historic Village open 7-9pm, 989-743-3650 26 Durand – Memorial Day Parade, 989-288-3715 www.owossospeedway.com 6 Laingsburg – 19th Annual Winter Fest Downtown, Corunna – Country Corn Maze – weekends thru 517-651-5358 JUNE October, www.cornmazefun.net 6 Corunna – Festival of Trees, 989-277-8592 Owosso – Saturday racing at Owosso Speedway, 1 Owosso/Corunna – Labor Day Bridge Walk, Historic Village, 810-610-0796 – 6-9pm www.owossospeedway.com 989-743-3650 7 Corunna – Festival of Trees 989-277-8592 5-8 Owosso – Curwood Festival, 989-723-2161 13 Byron – Fireworks Friends Annual Car Show, Historic Village, 810-610-0796 – 6-8pm 8 Durand – Model A Car Show, Durand Union Station, Maple Street Byron, 810-266-4232 12 Corunna – Christmas in the Historical Village, 7-9pm, 989-288-3561 12 Owosso – Annual Downtown Owosso Art Walk, 810-610-0796 9 Corunna – Circus Pages Circus, Shiawassee County 989-494-3344 13 Corunna – Breakfast with Santa, Community Center Fairgrounds, 989-743-3661 12 Owosso – Friday Night Car Cruise, Downtown 989-277-8592 13 Owosso – Friday Night Car Cruise, Downtown Owosso, 989-494-3344 13 Owosso -
