THE STORY Act I opens with the fairies discussing the fate of Iolanthe, one of their number who was banished 25 years previously for her marriage to a mortal. The Fairy Queen, whom Iolanthe was a particular favorite of, agrees to recall and pardon her. Iolanthe's son, Strephon, enters and tells his mother that he is in love with Phyllis, a Ward of the Chancery, but is forbidden by the Lord Chancellor to marry her. The Fairy Queen promises to aid Strephon in his fight for Phyllis, should he need it. The first act continues with Phyllis and Strephon singing of their love. The Peers and the Lord Chancellor make their entrances, the latter confessing his love for Phyllis. Ho,wever Phyllis is also courted by Earls Tolloller and Mountararat, and Strephons appeal to marry her is again rejected . Iolanthe discovers Strephon in tears and promises him her assistance . However, their meeting is overheard by Phyllis and the Peers who refuse to believe that such an attractive young woman can be his mother . Fairies, being immortal do not grow old, of . course. Strepho n Galls on the Fairy Queen for help and in the Fin ale she and the fairies tell the Peers they will send Strephon to Parliament to wreak havoc there. Act II shows Private Willis, of the Grenadier ' Guards, ! on ; sentry duty outside the Houses of Parliament as he reflects upon the current politi cal situatii:m. Meanwhile Strephon's career in Parliament is pursuing it's devastating force with the help of the fairies. Tolloller and Moun tararat, unable to agree on which of them shall marry Phyllis, both decide to give her up. Strephon tells Phyllis of his parentage and they renew their plans to marry. Iolanthe reveals that the Lord Chancellor is her husband, and agrees to help Strephon and Phyllis by asking him to agree to their marriage. Meanwhile all other Fairies have violated Fairy law by marrying Peers . In order to s.ave their lives, the Lord Chancellor suggests a change in the fairy law allowing Fairies to marry mortals . The Queen proposes to Sargeant Willis, for whom she has long cherished a secret love, and all depart happily to Fairyland.

ABOUT THE OPERA IOLANTHE was first performed on No vember 23, 1882, in both London and New York, in London running for 398 performances. It was the first opera to open in the newly built and in celebration of the fact that the theatre was the first in London to be lit entirely by electricity, the fairies had electric lights in their hair and at the tips of their wands. Recently the Doyly Carte Opera Co. produced a sold out run of IOLANTHE at the Lin coln Center in Washington D .C. during the Summer of 1978. Lovers of light opera wiII recognize the characteristic Gilbert and SuIIivan features throughout IOLANTHE. The gentle ( this time directed at the ), humor ous dialogue, the ingenious rhyming of Gilbert's verse ( take note of the Lord ChanceIIor' s "Night Song") and the unexpected twist ending, when Fairies join nobility while their Queen is content to become plain "Mrs. WiIIis". The charm of the music lies, as in aII the Savoy Operas, in its appropriateness to whatever mood the libretto requires. There are several examples of musical parody in IOLANTHE. With the entry of the Peers, Sullivan parodies the triumphal marches of Grand Opera ( to write Grand Opera was an ambition of Sullivan 's encouraged by ). The Guard sman's song incorporates the "fa la-la" refrain more commonly. found in madrigals, while Mountararat's song "When Britian Ruled the Waves" is reminiscent of patriotic drawing-room baIIads of the period .
