As I noted, the change in technol- ogy here is rapid and impressive: Only a couple years ago, the best LEDs could produce about 150 lumens of light, and their power consumption would deplete a pair of lithium 123A batteries in an hour or so. But several LED makers now have lamps that can produce upwards of 180 to 250 lumens while using only one- half to two-thirds as much power! If you don’t need a flamethrower, there’s still good news here: LEDs do not need to be run at full tilt, so another option is to dial back the light output (which also reduc- es power consumption) and then slash the size of the flashlight. As an example, SureFire’s new E1B Backup produces 80 lumens from one lithium battery and has a good runtime—good news for the bulk-conscious concealed carrier. My guess is that we will continue to see ongoing improvements in brightness, runtime, compactness and features, along with a reduction in operation costs. Because there are a lot of important and tricky details associated with modern tactical flashlights, a follow-up article will be posted on the USCCA web page at www.usconcealedcarry.com/LED-lights. html in an effort to shed some additional light on the things to consider when buy- ing an LED tactical flashlight. Even if this technology stuff bores you silly, I implore you to do your research because these are potentially life or death tools, and some of them can cost you more than a perfectly functional gun. n
