A Guide for Simon Students

Revised March 2002

The following guide has been prepared by second-year students as a reference for the Simon community. The idea for a more comprehensive resource came from the LASOS club. It draws from various sources, including the school's original "Survival Guide," guides from other business schools, and newspaper articles, including those in the Democrat and Chronicle. The inclusion of businesses, events and locations within this publication is not an endorsement of these places by the authors or the school.

If you have any suggestions or find any information that is no longer up to date, please contact the admissions office.

Revised March 2002 7 Incoming Student Checklist

Welcome to Rochester and the Simon School. Following is some general information and a list of resources available to help you get settled in.

(ITEMS 1- 7 MUST BE ADDRESSED. The remaining items are important and warrant your attention for a smooth transition to the Simon School environment.)

1. Sign In - Sign in with the receptionist and complete the form providing us with your local address and telephone number. Check in with an admissions staff member to get your ID verification slip and a short orientation to Rochester.

2. ID Card - In order to attend University special events and access certain buildings after hours you will need a student ID Card. You will need to take either a verification slip from the M.B.A. Programs Office or your course schedule to the I.D. Office located in Susan B. Anthony Hall.

3. International Students - All international students are required to fill out the appropriate arrival paperwork. You may check in with the International Student Office (ISO) located in Morey Hall, Room 209. Please bring your passport with you when checking in.

4. Housing- General information on housing and utilities is available in this guide. The Simon Housing Guide offers more detailed information on local apartment complexes which includes maps and layouts of apartments. You will also find postings for apartments and roommates on the bulletin boards located on the first floor of Schlegel Hall in the Student Commons Area.

5. Lockers- Lockers are located in the tunnel that connects Schlegel and Carol Simon Halls. There is a $10 deposit for lockers that is refundable at the end of the academic year. Contact the receptionist on the second floor of Gleason Hall to obtain a locker.

6. Payment Plan - All students need to fill out a Payment Plan form and submit it to the Registrar's Office prior to start of classes.

7. UHS - All students must turn in immunization records and appropriate forms to University Health Services (UHS) prior to start of classes. If you have questions, contact UHS at 275-2662.

8. Communication Channels - Each student has a mailfolder located in the Student Commons Area. Please check this often, as it is a primary means for the entire Simon School community to communicate with you. Each student will automatically have an e-mail account set up for them by the start of orientation. If you wish to set up your e-mail account prior to this, please fill out the form in the Computing Center located on the fourth floor and submit it to the consultant on duty. The Simon School Intranet can be accessed at www.inside.simon.rochester.edu. You will need to set up an e- mail account first, as your logon and password are used for both. Also, please read the monitor located above the mailfolders in the Student Commons Area. The monitor contains up to date information on events and important announcements.

9. Books - Books are available at the bookstore located in the Frederick Douglass Building. You will need to bring your course schedule or student ID with you in order to purchase books without paying sales tax. Your course schedule will be placed in your mailfolder prior to orientation. A list of most of the required books is included in this guide and available in the brochure rack at the admissions office.

Purchasing a car

Essential tips on purchasing a car (especially nice to have a car in the winter): 1. Hire a mechanic to take a look at a used car which interests you. If someone is not willing to let a mechanic look at the car, do not buy it from them. The Mount Hope Service Center provides a mechanic to look at cars for a fee of $55 (461-3120). 2. Make sure you check with a bank for the Blue Book Value of any used car in which you are interested. This is the way you can make sure you are getting a fair price. Also, you can simply buy a used car price guide at any bookstore or most magazine shops 3. If you are buying a new car, know that it is common to negotiate a price with a new car dealer. Make sure you have test driven the vehicle before agreeing to buy the car. Car dealers who will not commit to a price in writing without your commitment are not allowing you the freedom and time to make up your mind. 4. If you are an international student, bring along an American friend with you. Car salesmen always try to convince you to buy something that day. Remember: you are the customer and you are in control of the situation! To lease a new car, you may need to pay the lease two full years in advance. Insurance is mandatory for registering a car (look under car insurance).

There is a very useful web site which provides information on used cars and ranks them on reliability, www.carpoint.com. It also has information on new cars.

Credit Cards

It is sometimes difficult to obtain charge cards in the US, although they are helpful to have. Many banks require established credit in the US. Some banks will issue a debit card if you have an account with them, which deducts money from your checking account for each purchase. Check with your financial institution to see what types of credit cards are available for you. Talk to second year students about their experience in applying for cards.

Revised March 2002 18 Housing

Before making any verbal commitment or signing any agreement, ask questions. Ask to see the apartment before agreeing to rent.

• What are the terms of the lease? • Is the apartment furnished? • Is there a security deposit? • Are there any utilities included? (Very important, as cold winters can result in high heating costs). • Is parking available? • Are there any restrictions on children or pets? • Who takes care of cleaning the snow? • Is it possible to sublet the apartment during the summer? Is there any fee for subletting? • What happens if I want to break the lease? • When is the rent due?

On-Campus vs. Off-Campus Housing

Many students prefer living on-campus because of the camaraderie that occurs in the apartment complexes. In addition, on-campus housing makes it easier to commute to classes. Other students prefer to live off-campus and commute to classes. This enables a student to have greater flexibility in the type of housing they choose. Approximately half of our graduate students live off-campus.

Additional Information:

Additional sources of housing information are available in the Simon School Admissions Office, 3rd floor, Schlegel Hall:

• Graduate Housing Guide - published by the Office for Residential Life, this includes floor plans and rental rates for University housing facilities. • Housing Information Guide - information on off -campus housing including floor plans and rental rates of selected apartment complexes • Greater Rochester Visitor's Guide • Greater Rochester Map

If you are unsure about a neighborhood, please see an MBA Admissions Staff member in the Simon School Admissions Office 3rd floor, Schlegel Hall or call (716) 275-3533. Generally, students should consider the following streets as options:

Park East Westminster Cobbs Hill Highland Strong/U of Avenue Dartmouth Vassar Area: Park Area: R Area: Area: Cambridge Barrington Highland Linden Raleigh Oxford Princeton Edgerton Monroe Cypress Irvington Rutgers Culver South Rockingham Rossiter Harvard Monroe Goodman Mulberry Norfolk Berkeley Thayer Pinnacle Lattimore

Revised March 2002 19 Students should live east of the Genesee River, as generally this is a safer area.
