Following its sensational arrival, the politics of popular musical culture has however moved from the shared experience of protest movements and picket lines and to an individualised and celebrified consumerist experience. As a consequence what emerged, as a controversial and subversive phenomenon, has been de-fanged and transformed into a mechanism of establishment support. -
Ed Miliband's Proposed Reforms to the Relationship Between the Labour
Ed Miliband’s proposed reforms to the relationship between the Labour party and its affiliated trade unions reveal the ongoing struggle for the heart of Labour blogs.lse.ac.uk/politicsandpolicy/labour-and-unite/ 7/15/2013 Ed Miliband was under intense pressure to take action and distance the Labour party from strong union influence following the selection scandal in Falkirk. Eric Shaw examines these proposals and argues that the suggested changes do not really form a coherent programme. He asks why this has come about and sees it as an ongoing struggle for the heart of the Labour party between Blairites and the unions. Ed Miliband has announced some sweeping changes in the political and financial relationship between the Labour party and its affiliated trade unions. These have, so far, only been sketched out and we await to see what precise form (in terms of rule changes) they will take. The anticipated reforms include: 1. A shift from collective to individual affiliation to the party: in future trade union members would make an individual choice to join the party rather than being automatically affiliated through the decision of their union executives and conferences. 2. Limits to the amount of money aspiring candidates can spend in selection contests. 3. New limits on outside earnings by MPs and new rules on conflict of interests too. 4. The selection of candidates for the London mayoralty and for parliament by primaries in which all party sympathisers and not simply members would be entitled to vote. Why these reforms? Why now? The first point to be made that the suggested changes (and others too) do not really form a coherent programme. -

The main aim of this essay is to compare and con- trast different British newspapers in order to show how meaning is created and to identify any differences, depending on the discourse. To do this, specific theoretical frameworks have been applied, including critical discourse analysis, semantics, pragmatics and stylistics in the analysis of a number of different British newspapers. The analysis has shown that most of the interactions are used in all of the articles. Journalists have expressed many of the same arguments in their articles. The analysis showed that the arti- cles had many features in common and they require the reader to have a general political aware- ness as well as an understanding of the political leanings of the respective publications. It was discovered that the main difference in the articles is that they deviate from one another in how they present, interpret and relay topical and potentially controversial issues according to their leanings. The articles refer to the same stories and rely upon the same sources, but they pursue different angles, for example on national security, heritage and identity. -

To be or not to be in Europe: is that the question? Britain’s European question and an in/out referendum TIM OLIVER* ‘It is time to settle this European question in British politics.’ David Cameron, 23 January 2013.1 Britain’s European question It came as no surprise to those who follow the issue of the European Union in British politics that David Cameron’s January 2013 speech on Europe excited a great deal of comment. The EU is among the most divisive issues in British politics. Cameron himself drew on this to justify his committing the Conservative Party, should it win the general election in 2015, to seek a renegotiated position for the UK within the EU which would then be put to the British people in an in/out referendum. Growing public frustrations at UK–EU relations were, he argued, the result of both a longstanding failure to consult the British people about their country’s place in the EU, and a changing EU that was undermining the current relationship between Britain and the Union. As a result, he argued, ‘the democratic consent for the EU in Britain is now wafer-thin’. Cameron’s speech was met with both criticism and praise from Eurosceptics and pro-Europeans alike.2 In a speech at Chatham House backing Cameron’s plan, the former Conservative prime minister Sir John Major best captured some of the hopes for a referendum: ‘The relationship with Europe has poisoned British politics for too long, distracted parliament from other issues and come close to destroying the Conservative Party. -

BY DOMINIC WRING AND STEPHEN WARD ABSTRACT Downloaded from The 2010 election was one of the most competitive campaigns of recent decades. The first televised leaders’ debates along with the rise of online social networking led to renewed speculation about the potential influence of the media in cam- paigns. By contrast the press appeared to revert to pre mid-1990s form with strong support for the Conservatives and personal attacks on their opponents. This article concentrates on three main areas: the influence of the leaders debates on the cam- http://pa.oxfordjournals.org/ paign and outcome of the election; whether and how press endorsements made much difference; and finally, the hype surrounding the notion of an internet elec- tion and whether e-campaigning made any difference to the campaign. at University of North Dakota on July 12, 2015 IT IS something of a cliche´ to say that the media play a major role in modern general elections but this was particularly the case during the 2010 campaign. From the broadcasting perspective, interest focused on what influence the first televised leaders debates might have on the for- tunes of the parties and the campaign generally—how far would this result in a further presidentialisation of campaigning and would any particular party/leader benefit? In relation to the oldest news medium—the press—interest centred on whether endorsement of the Conservatives by the Sun would make any difference and, more gener- ally, whether newspapers were of declining significance in a multi- media age? At the outset of the election, much speculation centred on the Internet, notably how prominent and important would social net- working tools, such as Twitter and Facebook, be in the course of the campaign. -

APPENDIX 1: THE RESULtS ANaLYSED John Curtice, Stephen Fisher, Robert Ford and Patrick English The outcome of the 2017 election seems to pose a serious challenge to claims about the decline of Britain’s two-party system. No less than 84.5% of the UK-wide vote was cast for either the Conservatives or Labour, well above the proportion at any election since 1970. At 2.88, the effective number of parties in the electorate (as conventionally calculated) is still somewhat above two, but is now well down on the figure of 3.71 that pertained as recently as 2010.1 But the term ‘two-party system’, is often used to imply more than two parties dominating the vote. Amongst other things, it is also taken to refer to a system in which power and ministerial office alternate between the Conservatives and Labour, one of whom, thanks to the electoral system, always enjoys an overall majority in the House of Commons. But in 2017 no single party secured an overall major- ity, and the election resulted in a minority Conservative government backed by a ‘confidence and supply’ arrangement with the DUP. This fol- lows an election in 2010 which also resulted in a hung parliament (and the formation of the country’s first post-war coalition) and another in 2015 that gave the Conservatives a majority of just 12, a majority that in precipi- tating the early 2017 ballot Theresa May indicated was too small. There is another reason to question whether the outcome of the 2017 election necessarily represented a return to some kind of ‘normality’. -

Evolution of Political Manifestos with a study of proposals to Reform the House of Lords in the th 20 Century. by Peter KANGIS Ref. 1840593 Submitted to Kingston University in part fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science by Research. 16 July 2019. 1 Abstract This is a study of how electoral Manifestos have evolved in the 20th century, with a special case study of how Manifesto undertakings in one policy area, that of Reform of the House of Lords, have been delivered by a party when in government. An examination of the Manifestos issued by the Labour, Conservative and Liberal parties for the 27 elections between 1900 and 2001 shows a substantial increase in size on various dimensions and a certain convergence between the parties in their approach to presentational characteristics. A statistical analysis of the overall set of data collected could not confirm that the variations observed were not due to chance. Examination of the relationship between pledges in Manifestos and action taken to reform the House of Lords shows that these pledges were neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition for reform to take place. Several reforms have been introduced which had not been pledged in electoral Manifestos whilst several pledges put forward have not been followed up. But there was no bunting or cheering crowds. Instead, both candidates for the US Presidency made their announcements in a manner inconceivable just a few years ago: they released videos on their websites.” Politics, Policy and Television and radio transformed the way politics operated in the twentieth century. And, predicts the Internet Robert Colvile, the internet could do the same in the twenty-first. Yet the main British political parties are failing to exploit its potential. The BNP website has the ROBERT COLVILE same market share as all of the other major political parties combined. The internet will bring a far greater openness to politics, helping the activist and the citizen hold politicians to account. The web could also re-empower MPs, by linking them far more directly to the concerns of their constituents. And for policy development, the internet will revolutionise the way policy-making works. The most subtle, but perhaps most powerful, change, may be to the public’s mindset. As we grow used to the instant availability of information online, we will no longer tolerate delay and obfuscation in getting similar information from government. The individual, and not the state, will be the master in the digital age.
