CHAPTER 1 1.1 AIM, PURPOSE AND JUSTIFICATION OF THE STUDY This thesis attempts to reconstruct the manner and the effects of the forced removal of the Ravele community, from their historical homes in old Mauluma1 along the Luvuvhu River Valley. Luvuvhu is the name given to a river that dominates the area under discussion. The name Luvuvhu’ is retained until, it enters Kruger National Park, where the Vatsongas call it Phafuri - as the river flows through Chief Mphaphuli’s territory. After relocation, the whole area under discussion is now known as Levubu. Levubu is corruption of the word Luvuvhu by the local white farming community. Old Mauluma in the Luvuvhu valley was situated on the North Eastern part of Louis Trichardt. More or less 3000 Ravele community members were forcibly removed from their land, between 1920 and 1940 to new Mauluma or Beaconsfields.2 The removal constituted a severe crisis for the members of the community as they were taken from a rich ecological area and resettled 100 kilometres west of old Mauluma, a dry and rocky area. A study of the Ravele community’s removal from old Mauluma (Levubu area) is especially pertinent at this juncture because of the campaign by the previous owners to reclaim their land. Since the April 1994 election and the promise by the government that dispossessed people could reclaim their land, hundreds of the former Levubu residents (including Ravele community) have demanded compensation or return to their land. Not surprisingly, the campaign has the support of all those who were removed, but is viewed with suspicion by white farmers in Levubu and surrounding areas. -

The Microbiological Quality of Private and Communal Boreholes in the Tshitale-Hlanganani Region of the Limpopo Province, South Africa

[email protected] ABSTRACT A cross-sectional study was carried out to assess the microbiological quality of 97 private and 97 communal boreholes in the rural Thitale-Hlanganani area of the Limpopo Province, South Africa. Both bacterial and viral indicator microorganisms were used and included total coliform bacteria, faecal coliform bacteria, faecal streptococci bacteria, heterotrophic bacteria, Clostridium perfringens (vegetative cells and spores) and somatic bacteriophages. The South African criteria guidelines of good (negligible risk of microbial infection; fit for human consumption), marginal (slight risk of microbial infection; must be treated before consumption), and poor (risk of infectious disease transmission; not fit for human consumption) for water used for human consumption, with the relevant counts for each indicator organism, was used to group the private and communal boreholes according to the relevant indicator organism. Results indicated that although the majority of boreholes were placed into the good category, some boreholes did however fall into the marginal and poor categories for each indictor organism. This indicated the potential health risk present to the consumers using these boreholes for domestic water sources. Observations at the boreholes identified various potential sources of pollutions that could affect the microbiological quality of the borehole water. In conclusion, this study indicated the need for more intense monitoring of privately owned boreholes and the education of the rural communities on the installation and the maintenance of both private and communal boreholes. -

THE HISTORY OF THE PIETERSBURG [POLOKWANE] JEWISH COMMUNITY by CHARLOTTE WIENER Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS in the subject JUDAICA at the UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA SUPERVISOR: MR CEDRIC GINSBERG NOVEMBER 2006 SUMMARY Jews were present in Pietersburg [Polokwane] from the time of its establishment in 1868. They came from Lithuania, England and Germany. They were attracted by the discovery of gold, land and work opportunities. The first Jewish cemetery was established on land granted by President Paul Kruger in 1895. The Zoutpansberg Hebrew Congregation, which included Pietersburg and Louis Trichardt was established around 1897. In 1912, Pietersburg founded its own congregation, the Pietersburg Hebrew Congregation. A Jewish burial society, a benevolent society and the Pietersburg-Zoutpansberg Zionist Society was formed. A communal hall was built in 1921 and a synagogue in 1953. Jews contributed to the development of Pietersburg and held high office. There was little anti-Semitism. From the 1960s, Jews began moving to the cities. The communal hall and minister’s house were sold in 1994 and the synagogue in 2003. Restitution is one of three main elements in South Africa’s land reform program, which began in the mid 1990s and is still ongoing. There is a dearth of research on how the government has pursued restitution in northern Limpopo. Little is known about how claims for restitution have been completed; how and why those involved – ranging from white farmers and restitution claimants to government officials – have negotiated the program; or what will be the outcomes of restitution in the research area. Geographers, moreover, have contributed very little to the literature on restitution as a whole. Using qualitative research methods conducted during nine months of fieldwork in northern Limpopo, and examining the program with concepts of place, territory and class in mind, this dissertation addresses some of the shortcomings of the restitution literature. It details three main findings. First, that the government has pursued imaginative, innovative, yet ultimately authoritarian solutions to the challenge of transferring expensive commercial farmland to the rightful owners. The government has drawn upon ii the resources and technical expertise of white-owned agribusinesses, whose interest in restitution, although still unclear, is certainly driven by a desire to profit from the situation. -

ISBN No. 1-77005-027-2 ISBN Set No. 1-86845-645-5 Printed in the Republic of South Africa EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The more important findings of this study are summarised below under “Statistical analyses”, “Role of geophysical methods” and “Hydrogeological control of drilling operations” General Groundwater Region 7, a rectangular area of about 12 000 km2, is located in the Limpopo Province. Its eastern boundary is the watershed between the Sand River and its tributaries and the eastward draining Letaba and Pafuri Rivers. Its northern boundary is formed by Formations of the Soutpansberg Group that built the mountain range of that name. The western boundary consists from north to south firstly of Waterberg Group sedimentary rocks, followed by mafic Bushveld rocks and lastly by strata of the Wolkberg Group including the Black Reef Formation. These strata build the Highlands Mountains and the east- northeasterly trending Strydpoort Mountains that form the southern boundary. -

LIMPOPO WATER MANAGEMENT AREA WATER RESOURCES SITUATION ASSESSMENT MAIN REPORT OVERVIEW The water resources of South Africa are vital to the health and prosperity of its people, the sustenance of its natural heritage and to its economic development. Water is a national resource that belongs to all the people who should therefore have equal access to it, and although the resource is renewable, it is finite and distributed unevenly both spatially and temporally. The water also occurs in many forms that are all part of a unitary and inter-dependent cycle. The National Government has overall responsibility for and authority over the nation’s water resources and their use, including the equitable allocation of water for beneficial and sustainable use, the redistribution of water and international water matters. The protection of the quality of water resources is also necessary to ensure sustainability of the nation’s water resources in the interests of all water users. This requires integrated management of all aspects of water resources and, where appropriate, the delegation of management functions to a regional or catchment level where all persons can have representative participation. This report is based on a desktop or reconnaissance level assessment of the available water resources and quality and also patterns of water requirements that existed during 1995 in the Limpopo Water Management Area, which occupies a portion of the Northern Province. The report does not address the water requirements beyond 1995 but does provide estimates of the utilisable potential of the water resources after so-called full development of these resources, as this can be envisaged at present.
