Quinn I recommend it but if you have basic knowledge of the Star Wars timeline you should be completely fine if you read the books out of order. It's surely not the fault of the authors that they weren't given enough direction as to how to write their retellings, but it's still fucking annoying, and it's going to make Gidwitz look inconsistent, even though he and Bracken wrote their books at the same time. So, basically a retelling of The Empire Strikes Back written for kids, filled with funny dialogue and lessons on "how to be a Jedi". The only thing I have to note, after looking at the other reviews is that this is definitely written for children. It was a struggle to finish it. I know this is a cash-grab by Disney and that there is a chance that the target age group may not know how unbelievably bad the writing is which, if we can be honest,is unforgivable given that Gidwitz is telling a story originally and completely written by someone else , but how does it happen that Disney hires authors who simply do not understand the archetypes and imagery used by Lucas and Kershner and reduce them to so much muddled dreck? Do you still want to be a Jedi? It's surely not the fault of the authors that they weren't given enough direction as to how to write their retellings, but it's still fucking annoying, and it's going to make Gidwitz look inconsistent, even though he and Bracken wrote their books at the same time. Though Han Solo has thrilled Star Wars fans for decades, the notorious wisecracking scoundrel was chasing adventure and dodging trouble long before he walked into the cantina at Mos Eisley spaceport. No spoiler possible here. Other Editions I listened to this, and that could make it a different experience - but I loved this! Well, in that case, this is the book for you. I liked this one less than the first one though. Irvin Kershner did an incredible job. In this fifth volume of the Jedi Quest series, mysterious events are taking place: a Senator's son has vanished and a secret squad of renegade students exists in the shadows of his elite leadership school. Quinn I recommend it but if you have basic knowledge of the Star Wars timeline you should be completely fine if you read the books out of order. I could not keep myself interested. In this read-along storybook, the Rebellion begins a desperate mission to defeat the Empire once Gidwitz wanted to actually put readers in Luke's shoes, I think that telling it through second view was the perfect choice, since the main target audience is for kids. When she tells the students that this book is about the most famous jedi, they almost always guess Yoda, and some of them say they would rather be a sith lord. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back So You Want to Be a Jedi? Unsurprisingly, there have been numerous adaptations over the past four decades. Readers also enjoyed. Written with input from director Rian Johnson, this official adaptation of Star Wars: The Last Jedi expands on the film to include scenes from alternate versions of the script and other additional content. As my favorite of them all, I know the dialogue and the scenes in The Empire Strikes Back better than a favorite book. Especially when the author got key scenes and dialogue wrong. This would make a perfect gift for a young Star Wars loving padawan.

Star Wars and Eastern Philosophy / Religion Teacher Key Clip #1: Obi-Wan Explaining the Force to Luke in A New Hope Film: A New Hope: Episode IV (1977) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RroB_8Lhogs Summary: This explanation by the former Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi to Luke Skywalker centers on the concept of “The Force.” Obi-Wan’s explanation has connections to the concept of Taoism and the concept of “The Way.” Clip #2: Obi-Wan Conversing With Darth Vader in A New Hope Film: A New Hope: Episode IV (1977) http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8kpHK4YIwY4 Summary: This clip focuses on the meeting between the former student Darth Vader and his mentor Obi-Wan. The scene provides context related to multiple Eastern philosophies. There is the teacher/student relationship discussed by Confucius and how its failing can lead to an inharmonious life. Additionally, Obi-Wan’s quote is a foreshadowing of the Buddhist trait of the Eight-Fold-Path. Obi-Wan tells his former student, “If you strike me down, I will become more powerful than you could ever imagine.” Obi-Wan knows that if he dies, he will be reborn/reincarnated as a higher being (A Force Ghost), but he knows that this can only be accomplished with a proper understanding of the Force. This is something that Vader does not comprehend at this point, and thus does not understand how his former mentor can reach his nirvana state- of-mind (or even understand what Obi-Wan is talking about). 1 Clip #3: Yoda Training Luke in The Empire Strikes Back http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HMUKGTkiWik Film: The Empire Strikes Back: Episode V (1980) Summary: Jedi Master Yoda’s training of Luke deals with multiple aspects of Eastern religions.

58 • Articles • Across the Star Wars Universe: A Journey into the World of the Italian Star Wars Fandom GIADA BASTANZI Università Ca’ Foscari of Venice ANDREA FRANCESCHETTI Università Ca’ Foscari of Venice Abstract: In this essay, we perform ethnographic fieldwork on the costuming, prop-making, and performances of the 501st Italica Garrison, the Italian sub-section of the 501st Legion, drawing on the "language" and "speech" theories of Gilbert Ryle and J. N. Findlay (Ryle & Findlay, 1961) and the theoretical position on "strategies" and "tactics" of Michael de Certeau (de Certeau, 2001). While considering the Star Wars franchise and its narratives as a "social phenomenon," we will examine if and how the official Italian fandom’s tactics and performances conform to Henry Jenkins’ concept of "textual poaching" (Jenkins, 2005). In fact, prop-making and collecting performances are in dialectical relation to the narratives of George Lucas, as Lucas’s narratives are in relation to the concepts of Joseph Campbell’s Hero With a Thousand Faces (Campbell, 1949). Vol. 16, no. 1 (2018) New Directions in Folklore 59 Introduction In 2012, LucasFilm Ltd. was purchased by the Disney company. As part of an enormous economic operation, the animation corporation put efforts into broadening the worldwide Star Wars franchise to cultivate the brand and reach more people than ever before. "A long time ago," in 1977, the first film in the franchise, Star Wars: A New Hope was released, creating a generation of fans—and nearly 25 years later, in 2001, The Phantom Menace was released. The new trilogy drew to Star Wars an entirely new generation of fans.

Star Wars and the Hero's Journey Connor Butler TC 660H Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin May 7th, 2019 __________________________________________ Martin Kevorkian English Department Supervising Professor __________________________________________ Michael Harney Spanish Department Second Reader ABSTRACT Author: Connor Butler Title: Star Wars and the Hero’s Journey Supervising Professors: Professor Martin Kevorkian, Professor Michael Harney The Star Wars saga created by George Lucas was, by his own admission, influenced and guided by Joseph Campbell’s monomyth theory. The monomyth theory was outlined in The Hero with a Thousand Faces, written by Campbell. In the book, Campbell outlines the Hero’s Journey, a narrative cycle he developed from his research into mythologies and fairy tales from around the world. The Hero’s Journey consists of three distinct phases. The Departure, in which the Hero must embark on their adventure, discover the larger world, and confront new enemies. The Initiation, in which the Hero must undergo trials to prove their worth. Finally, there is The Return, in which the Hero returns to the world of the non-heroic in order to solve the crisis that instigated the journey. This paper examines how George Lucas uses the Hero’s Journey throughout the original Star Wars trilogy, consisting of A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and The Return of the Jedi, and how George Lucas reinvents film and TV tropes. George Lucas’ stated purpose is to create a new mythology to address contemporary moral, spiritual, and cultural quandaries. Understanding his work and its legacy fosters deeper insight into current cultural mores.

  • Hard to Believe It Is, but Taxes Lie at the Heart of the Star Wars Universe. In
Newton’s First Law of Prosperity: ‘Your wealth will not grow unless you actively nurture and monitor it!’ May the 21st Be With You, Yes? A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away (okay, on May 21, 1980), The Empire Strikes Back introduced the world to Yoda, the oldest, most-powerful, and most syntactically-challenged Jedi knight in the universe. Yoda delighted audiences as he trained Luke Skywalker, launched him into battle against Darth Vader, and died peacefully at age 900, his body becoming one with the Force. Today, his fans remember Yoda by celebrating May 21 as National Talk Like Yoda Day. And celebrating we are this year by talking about taxes! Hard to believe it is, but taxes lie at the heart of the Star Wars universe. In Episode One: The Phantom Menace, in the very first paragraph of the opening crawl, we learned that taxation of trade routes to outlying star systems was in dispute. The Galactic Senate had imposed taxes to fight interplanetary pirates, and in response, the Trade Foundation had blockaded shipping to Naboo to pressure the Senate into repealing those taxes. The Supreme Chancellor dispatched two Jedi Knights to resolve the dispute…and the adventure begins! Yes, more to the story there is than that. The Sith Lord Darth Sidious — masquerading as Senator Palpatine — used the dispute to seize dictatorial powers, declare himself Emperor, lure Anakin Skywalker to the Dark Side, commission a Death Star factory, and proceed to ravage the Galaxy. But really…dig down deep enough, past the epic space battles, light saber duels, and colorful aliens inhabiting Mos Eisley's cantina (aka "the bar scene"), and you'll find just another battle over tariffs.
