Report Fellow Members Well the clock is ticking down on Anzac Day. Our final meeting with Australian National Events was on Monday 16th April where we caught up on what is in place and what needs to be finalised, security is still high on the list for the march, but we think we are on top of it. We expect a reasonable attendance again this year, being the final year of the Anzac Centenary of the First World War, which came to an end with the signing of the Armistice on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month 1918. All is being put in place for the day with an early 3am start for the members working on the day. I would at this stage like to thank all of those members who come forward each year to volunteer for working the site or marshals for the march and a variety of other jobs, including the ladies of the Women’s Auxiliary, who prepare the poppy posies for the children on Anzac Day and the next day serve the breakfast on Anzac Day. I thank them all. We will see you on Anzac Day, remember for easy parking, park in the Middle Street car park. Check your programs for the day’s timings in this Bugle. The car park is coming along steadily with half of the first storey concrete been poured and preparations are being made for the last of the ground floor to go under concrete. It will start moving

2. a little quicker once this is done. We are still on a tight schedule to finish early November, hopefully we will make it as long as the weather holds out. Come along and check it out and say hello, we have windows in the wall so you can check on the progress and have a meal or a drink if you like. RSL Queensland is attempting to get in contact with as many of its members as possible. One of the criticisms of State has been lack of information to its members, on what RSL Queensland is doing in ways of Welfare and Business. To this end, State has thrown open their RSL RUNNER, which puts in print all of the news on a monthly basis. If you wish to enrol to this publication, all you have to do is update your email address with their membership team, email: [email protected], this will get you an update of States goings on. Over the last few months the Sub-Branch has been assisting the Friends of the 52nd Battalion in obtaining a grant to erect a Memorial plaque with the names of those who fell in World War 1. The 52nd Battalion in its attack on Villers-Brettonneux, France. The grant was obtained and the Memorial will be placed in the World War 1 crypt under the flame in Anzac Square Brisbane. Redlands are entwined in this attack as there were 3 local soldiers in the 52nd Battalion. They were Pte William Mills from North Street Cleveland who was a blacksmith, Pte Frank Saunders from Redland Bay was a farmer and Pte Wheeler who was a sawyer. The attack on Villers Brettonneux on the night of 24th April 1918 was a victory but sadly all 3 of our locals were killed. The Memorial will be dedicated by the Governor of Queensland at 10.30 am on the 24th April 2018. 100 years to the day of that attack in World War 1.

Keep well, Alan Harcourt, PRESIDENT

Sharks v Bombers AFL Announce ANZAC Game an Annual Contest Mick Boyle President Alexandra Hills AFL Club has advised that they will be playing the Victoria Point Sharks on Saturday 21st April. AFL Queensland have agreed to schedule this match in ANZAC week this year and in the future. The match is of great interest to the local Redlands AFL community and they are intending to make this day a celebration of local sport and more importantly a reminder of the sacrifices that many Redlands men and women have made over the generations. They will be presenting an ANZAC trophy to the winning team and also both clubs would like to present a medal to their best player on the day. They asked the RSL to submit the name of an exceptional serviceman. The Management Committee decided that Mr. Kevin Conway who was KIA in South Vietnam on 6th July 1964 should have this honour. Kevin grew up at Point before joining the Army and in 2016 his body was repatriated to Australia and buried with full military honours in the Cleveland Cemetery. Thank you to both AFL Clubs and AFL Queensland for their observance of this very important day in our military history. 11. Welfare Report With ANZAC Day approaching the days are very busy at HQ. A final meeting with the Event’s Organiser was held on 16th April and final details will be presented to the League meeting on Sunday 22nd April. Volunteers will be selling merchandise in the Coles and Woolworths complex in Cleveland on 20th,21st,23rd and 24th April and also at Anzac Centenary Park on Anzac Day. We have had many invitations from schools and Care facilities to attend ANZAC commemoration services mainly on the Monday and Tuesday before ANZAC Day. As we get more and more requests each year we decided to SMS our Service members to see if any could attend. Six hundred and twenty-five texts were sent out on 5th April and the response was an information gathering exercise and it was great to personally connect with our members. We had over 100 responses. It is pleasing to hear that a number of our members attend services at Schools/Care facilities due to family connections, some are off to reunions but have offered to assist in the future. One member goes with a group of other veterans in a caravan convoy to Western Queensland towns that no longer have an RSL and conduct Commemorations. Another is a volunteer at our local radio station and has asked if he or a representative can attend one of the schools with us to talk to the children about what ANZAC Day means to them. It was also pleasing that members who are unable to assist rang to acknowledge the text and have a chat. We will certainly use this form of social media in the future. If I missed returning your call my apologies, I think my phone went into meltdown. Thank you all who responded. The Pension Office has been getting busier with new and established clients keeping them on their toes. One of our biggest concerns at the moment is addressing homelessness. We are working with State RSL and Salvation Army to address this issue in the Redlands. The Pension Advocates saw around 50 clients again this month representing various age groups and it is nice to see that our HQ is a place where clients feel at ease to bring their families, our toy box has been well utilised this month.

The ladies also assist the Sub Branch with badge sales and set up a Field of Remembrance adjacent to Anzac Memorial Park. On 9th May the ladies will be attending SEDRSL Sing a Long at New Farm where they assist in serving morning tea and lunch to guests from RSL Care facilities in the SEDRSL district. 13. National Servicemen's Assoc. President’s Report: This is a very busy time for our members, many of whom are working on fund raising activities as well as assisting with the ANZAC Day Commemorations. In fact it has been an incredibly busy and very enjoyable month for our branch. Our last meeting was well attended in spite of being held on Easter Sunday. Our thanks to the RSL Club staff who did all in their power to help us overcome all difficulties and hold a successful meeting in this very busy period. During the month, we also enjoyed a day out and visit to a Telecommunications Museum. Any museum visit can sound like a very boring way to spend some time. Not at all. Largely because of the clever and thoughtful presentation and the enthusiasm of the volunteers, this was an enjoyable and interesting visit; this in spite of the fact that there were many of us who could remember using some of the museum artefacts being presented. We then proceeded to have lunch at the well-known Breakfast Creek hotel. At the price they had quoted us, I and I think quite a few others, were prepared to be presented with a meal far below the size and standard normally provided at the Brekky Creek. Far from it, the meal was excellent and quite up to the standard expected from this well-known establishment – good food, good company, how could it not be a success. Phil is working hard organising our projected trip to Stanthorpe. It’s all a lot of hard work, but I’m sure those who are going will enjoy another successful event. Eric Shaw Annual General Meeting: The members of the 2017 Nasho Committee are continuing on in 2018 except that Treasurer Ced Murray has resigned due to health reasons and will be replaced by Barry White. Ced will continue on as a Committee member. Coming Events: Sun 6th May General Meeting Wed 9th to Away trip to Stanthorpe. Fri 11th May Tues 15th May Mess Hall Dinner – Fiction 1730 for 1800 hours Wed 23rd May Ladies Lunch – Hoya Cafe – 1130 for 1200 hours Les Warner, Membership/Development Officer 14. Library Museum Report The number of visitors to the Museum has greatly improved since the inclusion of an article about the Library/Museum in the local paper and also another one in the State RSL News. Thanks to Jeff Stephenson for taking on the position of Honorary Journalist for the RSL and doing such a great job on the articles. We have loaned memorabilia to Price Waterhouse legal firm in the city for an ANZAC Day display in their offices. Some articles are available for loan for displays for short periods any time by contacting Les on 0450577186. Long-time Library/Museum volunteer, Albie Lester, has made a model WW1 Sopwith Camel aircraft for display in our WW1 area. Albie found the plans on the Internet and made the model from scratch. Many thanks, Albie. Donations received March-April • Collection of books from Rhondda Todd • Collection of books from Genevieve Balzavy • WW2 documents of Ernest George Gregory donated by Ross Gregory • Bayonet and scabbard donated by Glenn Hopewell-Mackenzie • Two cushion covers brought back from Egypt in WW2 donated by Paul Oates • A set of books Chega! and magazines re Timor-Leste • Model planes donated by Ron Uhlman • WW1 stirrups, bit and water bottle donated by Gordon McInnes One of the many objects in the collection worth a mention at this time of the year is one donated in 2010 by Ian Williams - a 1918 ANZAC Day badge put out by the Victorian Education Department. It is only a very small object, but certainly says a lot. Young Toby Muller (pictured right) whose Dad is Chaplain at Enoggera Barracks visited the Library/Museum on 3rd April. His comment when he walked in was “Awesome”. Two other school boys – Joseph Caffery (8) and Patrick Sanders (13) - also took time to look through the Library/Museum while their grandmothers were at the RVVG art class held in the Veterans’ Centre. Each of these three young men was a delight to talk with as they all had association with the Defence forces through their families. Vice President Les Warner, 15. Naval Association of Aust. REDLANDS BRANCH The year is progressing quite well, our social calendar is up and running, the next function being a high tea for our ladies in June/ July. The state AGM was held at Pine Rivers in March and our own VP Ray Sandford was again voted in as President. Unfortunately we have had a number of our, mainly older members, succumb to the ministrations of the Greenslopes Hilton, fortunately all are on the road to recovery. Our PR man Troy has had to hang up his camera due to the pressures of Uni life so we are looking for a replacement. Until next edition, yours aye, Graham Hargreaves redlands branch, Naval assoc. president Redlands Modern Military and Families Group Connections between young veterans/ex-service members in the Redlands continue to build. We are looking forward to catching up on Anzac Day in the Gallipoli Room. Unfortunaltely we had to cancel our Big Day Out at Coochie Island, due to bad weather. However, enthusiasim for the group remains strong. We hope to organise another get together in June. On another note, Josh Wilder (a member of RMMF) has identified this opportunity: “I currently work out of “The Cage Youth Foundation” in Redland Bay. They are putting together a package for Current/ Ex Service personal and families to study a short course in either Business management or Fitness to assist in employment or in transition! The criteria is simple, 15yrs or older, current or ex-serving members or family members! If you know anyone that could help or would be interested, please get in touch with Paul Bowers. He is Ex serving and now operates as a youth worker and managing “Get Set for Work” Programs!” To all our Younger Vets/Ex Service members, I look forward to seeing you on ANZAC Day. Best Regards, Joel Wilson 16. RAAF Association REDLANDS BRANCH The main objectives of the Royal Australian Air Force Association (RAAFA), is to promote and maintain the welfare and benefits of members; and for Redlands Branch, the support of No. 217 Squadron, Australian Air Force Cadets. A variety of social functions provide the opportunity for members to get out and enjoy fellowship with like-minded mates with an aviation background. Our informal gatherings every Wednesday at 3pm in the Anzac Lounge, Redlands RSL Club continue to be very popular for those members who can attend. This is a good opportunity for members to get out and get together in an informal environment; and for any new members to make contact. On Wednesday 21st March, Branch members enjoyed our second restaurant dinner for the year at Thai Siam, Cleveland. There was good attendance at this function and the Banquet style food did not disappoint. Our next social gathering will be our Branch Dining In night on Wednesday 23rd May at Redlands RSL. This popular type of function is steeped in tradition and this year, Redlands Branch will celebrate its tenth birthday as a RAAFA Branch.

RAAFA Redlands Branch has general meetings on the second (2nd) Sunday of every second month beginning with February each year. Meetings begin at 10:30am in the Gallipoli room of Redlands RSL Club, Passage Street, Cleveland. Our next general meeting will be on Sunday 10th June 2018 at 10:30am.

The Redlands Branch of RAAFA welcomes new members. Anyone interested in joining, please phone the secretary, David Field on 0439 855 894.

17. Cadet Units Report 136 Australian Army Cadet Unit Our new recruits fresh from getting their uniform and equipment issued during February, went into March doing lessons and trying to understand the theory and why they have to learn some things. Their first Biv held during the Month was for all the classroom lessons to be put in to practice. The recruits have worked well as a group both in the classroom and in the field and have really jelled. They are all working together in sections, this meant that they covered all of the field lessons ahead of time, which was really great as it was a hot weekend and we had to slow the tempo down. Our first biv for the year is March, for our cadets it was Navigation, it doesn’t matter how long we spend on the theory of Nav, it just never translates from paper to bush, so with a little bit of apprehension we let the cadets loose in the bush at Karingal Scout Camp with a Nav Data Sheet and a Compass. We did have sections get it wrong, but that is what training is all about, it is always interesting in those circumstances to see how the training kicks in – actions on lost, actions on loss of Coms etc. As staff we always worry about what can go wrong and how a teenager will react. In this situation it does re confirm to us what a great program Army Cadets has, as when things go wrong, the training that we deliver and sometime wonder if anyone is listening in the classroom, suddenly swings into action and a tricky situation is avoided or solved sometimes with very little adult input. Mr Ian Gray was invited to come and see the cadets in action during the weekend and we were pleased that he was able to visit and spent a few hours with us on the Saturday afternoon. He got to see the recruits in action learning about camouflage and concealment, plus why things are seen and what to look out for, he did escape without being covered in cam cream! He also chatted to some of the senior cadets who were manning the CP for the nav exercise and answered their questions on life in the Army during his time. The cadets really appreciate the knowledge and stories that come from ‘someone who was there’.

18. We have started our ANZAC Day training as we only have one Parade night in April before ANZAC Day due to the School Holidays which we are all looking forward to participating in.

Report provided by OC LT Wendy Kemp. 217 City of Redlands Squadron Australian Air Force Cadet Unit Crickets have been chirping at 217 Squadron as the cadets have been relaxing on school holidays. The first parade night back for the squadron commenced last night, and with no time to waste the whole team was working hard to get back into the swing of things. Cadets were seen to be wiping their foreheads as the sweat that was produced from CWOFF’s Ottermanns drill lesson was impressive. However, with the most anticipated event of the year rapidly approaching, nothing short of that is expected. With nearly less than two weeks until ANZAC Day, the squadron’s priority is ensuring that the cadets are issued with prestige looking uniforms and that the level of drill is up to a high standard. A few weeks into the past saw a team of staff members and senior cadets travel out to RAAF Base Amberley to assist in organising and 19. cleaning the Wings log store. Due to efforts like these, this Friday night will see the team travel out once again to collect a new uniform order of over 210 items for the brand new basic stage cadets. On Monday night, the Squadron was fortunate enough to have visits from Deputy President of the RSL Ian Gray, as well as three former cadets – Heath Fulton, Jason McDonald and Caitlin Clarke. During canteen, Caitlin, Jason and Heath gave a short but informative presentation about life in the Air Force and what they have achieved since graduation from 217 Squadron. This presentation proved to be extremely beneficial to the cadets that were interested in joining the Royal Australian Air Force in the future. Other than the intensity of the drill lessons increasing, things are smooth sailing at 217 Squadron, first stage cadets are looking forward to their first ANZAC Day activity whilst the senior cadets and staff are working hard behind the scenes. If you wish to be updated frequently on activities occurring at the squadron, there is a Facebook page called 217 Squadron Australian Air Force Cadets, so be sure to give it a thumbs up. Report provided by CUO XO Shania Brinckman.

21. The Hon Darren Chester MP Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Minister for Defence Personnel Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Centenary of ANZAC MEDIA RELEASE 29 March 2018 ONE MONTH UNTIL AUSTRALIA’S 2018 COMMEMORATIVE PROGRAM BEGINS APRIL will mark the start of a significant program of military commemorations in Australia and overseas, with 2018 culminating in the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. Armistice Day, 11 November 2018, will mark the end of the most important commemorative period in Australia’s history - the Anzac Centenary spanning 2014-2018. Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester encourages all Australians to attend the domestic and overseas commemorations throughout 2018 to recognise the service and sacrifice of the men and women who have fought to defend our country in all wars and peacekeeping operations. “It is always a moving experience to attend a commemorative service in Australia and a truly memorable experience attending a service overseas where Australians actually fought,” Mr Chester said. “As the last year of the Anzac Centenary, 2018 is an important year for Australians to commemorate those who have served our country and to learn about Australia’s military history so that it is remembered for generations to come. “Many Australians will be planning overseas trips this year and I encourage them to register early for commemorative services to pay their respects.” In Australia, commemorations will be held for the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic, the 50th anniversary of the Battles of Coral and Balmoral, the 65th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice, the 75th anniversary of Australian work on Hell Fire Pass and completion of the Thai Burma Railway and the Centenary of the First World War Armistice. Overseas, Australia will commemorate the Centenary of the Battle of Villers-Bretonneux, the Centenary of the Battle of Hamel and the Centenary of the First World War Armistice. 22. The Australian Government will support Anzac Day Services in France, Turkey, Belgium, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia in 2018. On 25 April 2018, the commemoration of the Centenary of the Battle of Villers-Bretonneux will be recognised in a Dawn Service at the Australian National Memorial situated just north of the village of Villers-Bretonneux, France. The anniversary marks the day 100 years ago when the Australian 13th and 15th brigades successfully retook the village from German forces in a surprise night attack. A commemoration to mark the Centenary of the Battle of Hamel will be held at the Australian Corps Memorial, Le Hamel, France on 4 July 2018. The 93 minute long battle on 4 July 1918 was a success due to the planning and direction provided by Lieutenant General John Monash. In 2018 Australia will also mark other days of national significance including Kapyong Day (Korean War), Battle of Coral Sea Day, Victory in Europe Day, Battle of Lone Pine, Victory in the Pacific Day, Vietnam Veterans Day, the Battle for Australia Day, Merchant Navy Day and National Peacekeepers and Peacemaker Day. Registration to attend overseas commemorations is now open and passes are provided at no cost. Details on how to register are available on DVA’s website at www.dva.gov.au. Passes are not required to attend domestic commemorations. A list of key domestic and international commemorations for 2018 is set out below.
