Conclusion & Next Steps ABSTRACT: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, scholars at institutions of higher education around the world are transitioning their teaching, service, and research into online settings; for many this may be a new and challenging experience. While many of the best practices associated with research in traditional or face-to-face settings also apply to research in or via online settings, there are some additional challenges and nuances that researchers must adequately address and plan for due to the affordances and limitations of online settings. This paper discusses the key issues of privacy, informed consent, trust and trustworthiness, and retention through the literature and provides practical recommendations based on evidence and experience from two different online research projects. The reflections on and examples from these two research projects contextualize the above issues and act as evidence to inform research as a practice. The authors hope this evidence and practical guidance may help researchers better prepare for research in a socially distanced world. Digital Ethnography
Covid-19 The Covid-19 pandemic has altered all of our lives — with immense tragedy, and rapid, major changes in how we work, learn and interact with one another. The pandemic shrunk our spatial experience, disrupted our notions of time, decreased in-person social interaction, and moved our social existence online, both personally and professionally. Isolation measures either limited or stopped social research that involves in-person interactions for the duration of the epidemic. Therefore, many existing qualitative research methods became popular during the pandemic as a way to continue important work while keeping everyone safe. As we begin to imagine the world post-covid, many of the approaches to qualitative methods that have become so popular during this time will likely endure and expand. Qualitative Methods Qualitative research focuses on the collection and interpretation of linguistic and visual data. It is used to investigate and analyze the meanings, interpretations, and symbols people attribute to their behavior, actions and interactions with others. Our goal is to provide a practical foundation for imagining the range of what is possible in social research during lockdown, and then point to resources to more fully engage in learning these methods. -
Doing Fieldwork in a Pandemic
DOING FIELDWORK IN A PANDEMIC Isolation measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 means that social researchers who have for doing fieldwork in a pandemic - specifically, ideas for avoiding in-person interactions by using mediated forms that will achieve similar ends. Social research has been conducted online for many years, of course. There are many examples of using online survey tools or doing content analyses or ethnographies using existing online interactions as research materials. Interviews have been conducted by phone or Skype for a long time. This document was initially directed at ways for how to turn fieldwork that was initially planned as using face-to-face methods into a more ‘hands-off’ mode. However, people have added useful material about ‘born digital’ research (content already generated on the internet by online interactions), which provides an alternative source of social research materials if researchers decide to go down that path.
