Dim. 50 x 35cm Est. 48,000 - 60,000 AED 13,043 - 16,304 USD Abdul Qadir Al Rassam (1882 - 1952) Baghdad, Iraq Was born in Baghdad, Iraq and is one of the rst generation of Iraqi artists to study abroad and paint in the European style. He was born in the Maysan Province, Qal'at Saleh District in 1882. Qadir's life straddled two distinct eras in Iraqi history: he was born during Ottoman rule and died in the royal era (1921-1958). He was the rst well-known painter in modern Iraq and the leader of realism school in Iraq. He is noted for his portraits and landscapes, painted in the Realist style. He studied military science and at the Military College, Istanbul, Turkey, (then the capital of the Ottoman Empire) from 1904, where drawing and painting were part of the curriculum. Along with contemporaries, Salim Mohammed Saleh Zaki (1888-1974) and Hajj Mohammed Salim (1883-1941) who was a relative; all of whom also studied at the Military Academy, this group of Iraqi artists were rst generation to paint in the European style. is group became known as the Ottoman artists. He was the rst local artist to oer painting lessons in his studio, and many modern Iraqi painters began their careers by studying with him. He was also the rst modern Iraqi artist to paint a mural in a public building - at the entrance to the Cinema Royal in Baghdad. 3 Lot 2 Mohammed Salih Zeki. Oil on Canvas. Approx. He graduated as Lieutenant Junior Grade from the military school, Istanbul (Turkey), in 1908. Studied painting at the Fine Arts Institute so as to nish the study of this art which he had started at the military school. Practiced landscape painting and completed many drawings recording his sightseeings and impressions of the countries which he visited. In 1939 he travelled to Europe to acquaint himself with art museums. Participated in the Iraqi Artists Society exhibitions. Member of the Iraqi Artists Society. 4 Lot 3 Assim Hafedh. Oil on Board. Dim. 45 x 25cm Est. 60,000 - 80,000 AED 16,304 - 21,739 USD Jewad Saleem (1919 – 1961) Iraq Jewad Salim was an Iraqi painter and sculptor born in Ankara (Turkey) in 1919. He studied sculpture in Paris (1938-1939), Rome (1939-1940) and London (1946-1948). Upon completing his studies, Salim returned to Iraq and was appointed head of the Sculpture Department at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad, a position he retained until his death in 1961. He also founded the Jama'et Baghdad lil Fen al-Hadith (e Baghdad Modern Art Group) with fellow artist Shakir Hassan Al Said, as well as the new Baghdad School of Modern Art. He is especially known for his Nasb al-Hurriyah (Monument of Freedom), located in one of Baghdad's main squares. In this monu- ment, the artist celebrated the Iraqi people and the 1958 Revolution, however, he died before the monument was completed. Took part in the Avicenna Exhibition in Baghdad in 1952. Held a one-man exhibition in Baghdad in 1956. Member of the Iraqi Artists Society. 8 Lot 7 Hadh Al-Droubi. 1979. Oil on Canvas. Approx. Dim. 69 x 49cm Hadh Al-Droubi Est. 56,000 - 62,000 AED 15,217 - 16,848 USD (1914 - 1991) Iraq In 1936, Hadh Al Droubi travelled to Rome for several years to receive formal training in art. He pursued further studies at London’s Goldsmiths College (1950), after which he returned to Iraq and was actively engaged with the growing art scene. He is credited for establishing Baghdad’s rst free atelier studio in 1942 and founded the artist collective; e Impressionists. Al Droubi is highly regarded not only for his work, but also for his involvement in further developing arts education in Iraq. He was the chair of the Iraqi Artists, and Dean of the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad. His art explored themes of daily life in Iraq. 9 Lot 8 Faiq Hassan. 1989. Oil on Canvas. Approx. Dim. 32 x 25cm Est. 24,000 - 30,000 AED 6,522 - 8,152 USD Faiq Hassan (1914 – 1992) Iraq Faiq Hassan is often regarded as the father of Iraqi modern art. In 1933, Hassan was the second recipient of a government-funded scholarship to study art in Europe, where he pursued his studies at the Ècole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. In 1938, upon obtaining his degree, he returned to Baghdad and accepted a position at the Institute of Fine Art as the director of the Department of Painting and Sculpture. Hassan was highly active and involved in numerous art groups that brought artists together in exhibitions, including the Society of the Friends of Art. In 1950, Hassan founded the group Ar-ruwwād, or the Pioneers, that began under the name Société Primitive. In 1967, Faiq Hassan formed another art group known as Az-Zawiya, or the Angle, which included prominent artists such as Ismail Fattah, Mohammed Ghani Hikmet, and Kadhim Hayder. roughout his career he experimented with various art styles and has been described as a primitivist, an impressionist, and a cubist. 10 Lot 9 Faiq Hassan. Dim. 66 x 63cm Est. 80,000 - 100,000 AED 21,739 - 27,174 USD Khalid Al Rahal (1926-1986) Iraq He was an Iraqi sculptor and one of the leaders of the art movement in Iraq. He received his diploma in sculpting from Baghdad Institute of Fine Arts in 1947 and joined Baghdad’s Group of Modern Art in 1953 in which he had participated in several exhibitions until 1962. Afterwards, he moved to Rome and received a degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome in 1964. Although he is trained as a sculptor, Al-Rahal also enjoyed painting and had exhibited several of them. Khaled Al Rahal was a student of the legendary Iraqi sculptor Jawad Saleem, and he developed a professional yet very emotionally driven attachment to Jawad and his work. One account recalls that on the day of Jawad Saleem’s funeral, Khaled drove on his motorcycle holding a black bag, ran through the massive crowds, uncovered Saleem’s face and started kissing him as he cries his loss. He later removed sculpting clay from that bag and placed it over Saleem’s face, creating a mask that reserves Saleem’s features and returned it to the bag and left. 12 Lot 11 Issa Hanna. 1976. Graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts, 1950. He was granted a scholarship to USA to study visual studio. Joined the evening classes in the Art Institute of the University of Sinacore for a year. Took part in the rst collective exhibition held in Al-Gharbya School in 1933, took part in the exhibitions of art and was one of its founding mebers.

Relics have beem found indicating that the Iraqi craftsman is the first artist in the world. He is the one who creates and produces such beautiful household pottery pieces for functional purposes for eating, drinking and other daily uses. The Baghdad School of Art of Illustration was founded by Iraqi artist Yahya bin Mahmoud bin Yahya bin Abi al-Hassan al-Wasiti who laid down its pillars. Al-Wasiti lived in the seventh Hijri century and is considered to be at the forefront of Arab and Islamic creativity scene where the Islamic art of illustration could be straightened and become competitive. Then this School spread from Mesopotamia to all other Islamic countries. Al-Wasiti inspired others with his miniature manuscripts on which he painted topics and narrative facts from the collections of al-Hariri which were written by Abu Muhammad al-Qasim bin Ali bin Othman al-Basri, famous as “al-Hariri”. These collections are considered to be among the Arabic literary masterpieces due to their richness of material, accuracy of observation and unique imagination. Artist al-Wasiti completed illustrating and scripting these collections in 634 A.H./1237 A.D., and they are now treasured at several international museums and libraries.

    The Principle of Movement in Moroccan Design; as a source of inspiration for contemporary artistic applications Practice-based research in Art and Design Naser Hassan AI-Rifaei A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Brighton for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2009 University of Brighton Abstract This project focuses on utilizing the principle of movement contained in traditional Moroccan design (PMMD) for the production of new and inventive artworks. The PMMD is one of the main concepts that rules the creation and construction of design elements; it consists of a group of advanced technical procedures applied to achieve the highest levels of unity, harmony, variation and rhythm between lines and shapes. Great consideration in the PMMD is given to the viewer's perception, as all parts are formed to be equally interesting and to work harmoniously together suggesting ways for the viewer's eye to interact with and move in and throughout the composition. The purpose of this research is to examine viable methods for stimulating new ideas by taking the aesthetic and technical significances of the PMMD as a source of creative inspiration. The work involved analyzing the relationship between form, method and perception in traditional compositions by exploring the role of PMMD in 1) the process of creating and shaping design elements separately, 2) methods of relating the lines and shapes of different design components. Data on PMMD was collected from recent literature on Islamic art and Moroccan design, from interviews with master-craftsmen, and from my personal analyses and observations.

Cultural Continuity in Modern Iraqi Painting between 1950- 1980 Shakiba Sharifian* Mehdi Mohammadzade** Silvia Naef*** Mostafa Mehraeen**** Abstract Since the early years of 1950, which represent the development period of modern Iraqi art, the “return to the roots” movement has been an impartible mainstream in Iraq. The first generation of modern artists like Jewad Salim and Shakir Hassan Al-Said considered “cultural continuity” and the link between “tradition and modernity” and “inspiration from heritage1” as the main essence of their artistic creation and bequeathed this approach to their next generation. Having analyzed and described a selection of artworks of modern Iraqi artists, this paper discusses the evolution of modern Iraqi art, and aims to determine cultural and artistic continuity in modern paintings of Iraq. It also seeks to answer the questions that investigate the socio-cultural factors that underlie the formation of art and establish a link between traditional and modern ideas and lead to continuity in tradition. Therefore, the research hypothesis is put to scrutiny on the basis of Robert wuthnow’s theory. According to Wuthnow, although configuration and the objective production of this movement is rooted in the “mobilization of resources”, the artistic content and approach of the painting movement (i.e. the continuation of the tradition along with addressing modern ideas) is influenced by factors such as “social Horizon”, “existing discursive context” and “cultural capital” of the painters.

He was the first well-known painter in modern Iraq and the leader of realism school in Iraq. He studied military science and art at the Military College, Istanbul, Turkey, (then the capital of the Ottoman Empire) from 1904. He studied art and painting in the European traditional style and became a landscape painter, he painted many landscapes of Iraq in the realism style, using shading and composition to suggest time periods. He was a major figure among the first generation of modern Iraqi artists and was a member of the Art Friends Society (AFS, Jami’yat Asdiqa’ al- Fen). A collection of his work is hung in The Pioneers Museum, Baghdad. A prolific painter of oils, the majority of his works are now in private hands.
