  • Encounters Between Jesuit and Protestant Missionaries in Their Approaches to Evangelization in Zambia
chapter 4 Encounters between Jesuit and Protestant Missionaries in their Approaches to Evangelization in Zambia Choobe Maambo, s.j. Africa’s reception of Christianity and the pace at which the faith permeated the continent were incredibly slow. Although the north, especially Ethiopia and Egypt, is believed to have come under Christian influence as early as the first century, it was not until the fourth century that Christianity became more widespread in north Africa under the influence of the patristic fathers. From the time of the African church fathers up until the fifteenth century, there was no trace of the Christian church south of the Sahara. According to William Lane, s.j.: It was not until the end of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries that Christianity began to spread to the more southerly areas of Africa. The Portuguese, in their search for a sea route to India, set up bases along the East and West African coasts. Since Portugal was a Christian country, mis- sionaries followed in the wake of the traders with the aim of spreading the Gospel and setting up the Church along the African coasts.1 Prince Henry the Navigator (1394–1460) of Portugal was the man behind these expeditions, in which priests “served as chaplains to the new trading settle- ments and as missionaries to neighboring African people.”2 Hence, at the close of the sixteenth century, Christian missionary work had increased significantly south of the Sahara. In Central Africa, and more specifically in the Kingdom of Kongo, the Gospel was preached to the king and his royal family as early as 1484.

His missionary companions were George Suckling and Lambert Rogers. They were looking for a suitable spot in which to establish a mission station for outreach among the Luvale people. A fortnight later, however, Arnot’s spleen ruptured, forcing his return to Johannesburg. It would be his last expedition. He died in May in South Africa. In the final words of his last book he had written: ‘Messers. Suckling and Rogers had no hesitation in deciding to stay on. May the Lord’s richest blessing rest upon them’.1 Within two years Rogers, too, was dead and the burden of the mission fell on Suckling. At the place known as Chitokoloki—meaning ‘a place of bright shining’—he established a printing press and a school, with the aim of reaching through education the Lunda people, on whom his work came to focus. Later, came medical work, with the addition of a hospital and a leper colony. Alma Turnbull’s book, as the subtitle indicates, was published to coincide with the centenary of the mission of Suckling and Rogers. It is a fitting celebration, being lavishly illustrated on high-quality, glossy paper, with all but a few of the photographs in colour. She traces the beginning of the mission and the vast influence that George Suckling had on the area, and takes the story up to the present time.

  • The Beginnings of Anglican Theological Education in South Africa, 1848–1963
Jnl of Ecclesiastical History, Vol. 63, No. 3, July 2012. f Cambridge University Press 2012 516 doi:10.1017/S0022046910002988 The Beginnings of Anglican Theological Education in South Africa, 1848–1963 by PHILIPPE DENIS University of KwaZulu-Natal E-mail: [email protected] Various attempts at establishing Anglican theological education were made after the arrival in 1848 of Robert Gray, the first bishop of Cape Town, but it was not until 1876 that the first theological school opened in Bloemfontein. As late as 1883 half of the Anglican priests in South Africa had never attended a theological college. The system of theological education which developed afterwards became increasingly segregated. It also became more centralised, in a different manner for each race. A central theological college for white ordinands was established in Grahamstown in 1898 while seven diocesan theological colleges were opened for blacks during the same period. These were reduced to two in the 1930s, St Peter’s College in Johannesburg and St Bede’s in Umtata. The former became one of the constituent colleges of the Federal Theological Seminary in Alice, Eastern Cape, in 1963. n 1963 the Federal Theological Seminary of Southern Africa, an ecumenical seminary jointly established by the Anglican, Methodist, I Presbyterian and Congregational churches, opened in Alice, Eastern Cape. A thorn in the flesh of the apartheid regime, Fedsem, as the seminary was commonly called, trained theological students of all races, even whites at a later stage of its history, in an atmosphere

  • A Study of Ethnographic Collecting and Display
Material Cultures of Imperialism in Eastern Africa, c.1870–1920: A Study of Ethnographic Collecting and Display Alison Bennett UCL PhD History 1 This thesis is submitted for the degree of PhD. I, Alison Bennett, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract This dissertation examines the entangled relationship between ethnographic collecting and early British imperial expansion in present-day Uganda and neighbouring parts of Kenya. Between 1870 and 1920, thousands of objects from this region were accessioned by British museums and their colonial counterparts in eastern Africa. However, historians and curators alike know remarkably little about the contexts of their acquisition. Histories of the colonial period in Uganda and Kenya have rarely engaged with these crucial material sources, relying instead upon methodologies that privilege the textual and oral archive. Meanwhile in museum histories and displays, objects from eastern Africa are eclipsed by material culture from western Africa and Egypt. By combining close object analysis with archival and visual material, and by drawing on theoretical approaches to material culture from anthropology, this thesis reassembles the rich and complex histories of this important material archive for the first time. In doing so, it reveals the significant material underpinnings of both imperial and counter-imperial activity in the region. Focusing on a variety of different collectors ranging from colonial officials to missionaries, local leaders and museums, it shows that collecting was a pivotal tool for mediating different encounters, relationships, identities, and power structures within colonial society.

  • Brethren and the Sao Tomé Cocoa Slavery Controversy: the Role of Charles A
BHR 4: 98-113 BRETHREN AND THE SAO TOMÉ COCOA SLAVERY CONTROVERSY: THE ROLE OF CHARLES A. SWAN (1861-1934)1 Tim Grass It is a commonplace of Brethren historiography that their missionaries sought to stand apart from matters to do with local politics and colonial administration, focusing on the proclamation of the gospel. However, such a view has been challenged by a few writers, and it is fair to say that it has been more of a reflection of attitudes at home than of the situation ‘on the field’. This is strikingly demonstrated by the involvement of the Brethren missionary Charles A. Swan (1861- 1934) in anti-slavery campaigning, and the way in which his career has been treated by later writers on Brethren mission. Swan was born and brought up in Sunderland, becoming a clerk on leaving school. Around the age of nineteen Swan was converted, mainly through the preaching of A.A. Rees (1815-84) at Bethesda Chapel. Rees was one of a number of pastors of independent evangelical causes who were to a considerable extent fellow-travellers with Brethren,2 and so it was a relatively easy step for Swan to begin attending a Brethren assembly, where he began to be exercised about becoming a missionary. Even before his conversion, he had been interested in things African, and after it he devoured Livingstone’s books as well as keeping up with reports of Fred Arnot’s work in Central Africa (Arnot had gone out in 1881).3 When he went abroad in 1886, it was in fellowship with the editors of Echoes of Service, 1.

(University of NSW) B.D. (University of Sydney) Grad. Dip. Min. (Melbourne College of Divinity) School of Arts Faculty of Arts Griffith University A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy May 2007 ABSTRACT The Anglican Church of Australia agreed to a national constitution in 1962. Yet at a national level it is hardly a cohesive body with a sense of unity and common purpose. Historically, Australian Anglicanism developed along regional lines, with the result that diocesan separateness rather than national unity became enshrined as a foundational principle of Anglicanism in Australia. This study questions this fundamental premise of the Anglican tradition in Australia. It argues (1) that it is not a true reflection of the Anglican ethos, both in its English origins and worldwide, and (2) that it prevents Anglicanism in Australia from embracing its national vocation. An alternative tradition has been present, in fact, within Australian Anglicanism from the beginning, although it has not been considered to be part of the mainstream. Bishop Broughton, the first Anglican bishop in Australia, was deeply sensitive to the colonial context in which the Anglican tradition was being planted, and he adapted it accordingly.
