Signed : Date : June 2016 ii UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA ABSTRACT This paper dealed with complex sentences used in Elizabeth Gilbert’s novel “Eat, Pray, Love”. The objective was to find out the complex sentences with Adverbial Clauses and their types used in the novel. In order to get the needed result, the data were taken from the story of the novel. The data, then, were described based on its kinds and their types. From the description, it is found that the complex sentences with adverbial clauses in this novel had adverb adverbial clause of time (6 sentences) 28,5%, adverbial clause of cause (2 sentences) 9,5%, adverbial clause of condition (2 sentences) 9,5%, adverbial clause of manner (2 sentences) 9,5%, adverbial clause of concessive (2 sentences) 9,5%, adverbial clause of condition (1 sentence) 4,7% iii UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA ABSTRAK Kertas karya ini membahas tentang kalimat komplek yang digunakan dalam novel Elizabeth Gilbert “ Eat, Pray, Love”. Tujuannya dalah untuk menemukan kalimat komplek dalam bentuk klausa adverbia dan jenis-jenis yang digunakan dalam novel tersebut. Kesimpulannya adalah daita novel tersebut. Data kemudian di deskripsikan berdasarkan jenis-jenisnya. Dari deskripsi tersebut ditemukan bahwa kalimat majemuk bertingkat dalam bentuk klausa adverbia waktu (6 kalimat) dengan 28,5%, klausa adverbia sebab (2 kalimat) 9,5%, klausa adverbia perbandingan (2 kalimat) 9,5%, klausa adverbia sikap (2 kalimat) 9,5%, klausa adverbia kondisi (1 kalimat) 4,7%. iv UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA ACKNOWLEDGEMENT First of all, I would like to thank the Almighty God who blesses and guides me in writing this paper. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study Language is the most important thing in all parts of the world in having interactions with others people. People can communicate with the others include spoken or written language by making statements, explaining report, and expressing ideas. Without the existence of the language, people will have never been able to have a relation with others. Siahaan (2008:43) says that language is a unique human inheritance that plays very important role in human’s life, such as thinking, communicating ideas, and negotiating with the other. Language is the way. The languages show the similarities in their principle. All languages have this complex, many-layered structure. Owen (2006:1) says that language can be defined as a socially shared combination of those symbols and rule governed combinations of those symbols. Language which is governed by the provisions in questions as above is a cultural and also grammar, language has a very close relationship with grammar where language is a series of rules to learn grammar, rules governing use of language for forming a sentence. Moreover, we have seen to what extent situations conditions the way in which people speak or write. It will be helpful at this point to outline grammar model which relates to a sentence structure in language. When to describe the sentence in the novel, grammar is needed to help us understand about how to make sentences in paragraph and interesting. Grammar teaches us how to read, speak, and write English clear and right. 1 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Woods (2010:9-10) says, “Grammar also means a set of standard that you have to follow in order to speak and write better.
