News from the CEO

Welcome to our February newsletter. Apologies for the absence of the January newsletter but since our AGM last December we have been very busy adapting to internal changes and reconfiguring our services. Most notably, the Children and Young People's Team (CYP) will be working even harder to support and empower voluntary and community organisations working with our younger citizens thanks to the John Lyons Foundation. To this end, our CYP team is undertaking a needs analysis of the sector and I would urge you all to complete the survey so that we can shape our offer more effectively towards your needs.

Thankfully, after a tough few months, we have had a very productive start to 2015. We are delighted to announce we have a CommUNITY Barnet Blog with Barnet Times, which we will use to highlight the positive impact our sector is having on the lives of residents. If you would like us to blog any interesting stories highlighting the work you do, please contact Marley.

We are also thrilled to announce that Volunteer Centre Barnet will continue to deliver a brokerage service - volunteer led and volunteer delivered – we believe this new model exemplifies the sector's resilience to change and challenge. Enormous thanks to our volunteers Donald, John, and Mita for the great work they are doing leading this service. See the Jobs and Volunteering section below for more information.

Healthwatch Barnet continues to flourish. In mid-January we met with the Under Secretary for Public Health Jane Ellison MP who complimented our local volunteers Sue Blaine and Stuart Block for continuing to champion the Healthwatch Barnet brand. Find out more here.

Our Fundraising Coaching Service was cited by Moneytree Giving as their winning case study for the best Strategic/Fundraising Consultancy at the Institute of Fundraising 'Partners in Fundraising Awards' which is a fantastic endorsement of a new approach to building sustainability. We will be organising a mop- up session for organisations who used the service in March to get feedback and to help co-design the new service which we can bid for, so watch out for details.

Supporting a vibrant and successful voluntary and community sector remains a priority for CommUNITY Barnet. We are sad to lose the experienced and knowledgeable Victor Momodu who provided wall-to-wall expert VCS advice, but mindful of the sector's dynamism we are developing a virtual VCS where toolkits and templates will be available to download online to help organisations to self-manage themselves. In addition a range of workshops will be organised throughout the year to support the long term viability of the sector. To complement this offer we will be offering 1:1 advice on an appointment basis. Anyone requiring advice and information please email [email protected] with your query and we will get back to you.

Finally, you may notice that the newsletter has a new look. We hope this makes it easier to navigate. If you have any suggestions on how we can further improve it, please email Marley. All comments are welcome!

Best wishes Julie Pal CEO

Survey on sector support for children, young people and their families

There has been a lot of doom and gloom around but I also know that there are still a lot of great organisations in Barnet supporting our children, young people (CYP) and their families. The austere funding landscape, with cuts / less money around is no doubt making it harder for organisations to continue to function. We at CommUNITY Barnet have not escaped the hard times, but please be assured that we continue to seek funding to support you as our members. Reduced funding means that we have to work differently and we are trying to find out how we can support you / your organisations better.

As existing members, we have some basic details regarding your organisation on our database. However we are trying to get additional information - like the type of services currently being offered to CYP and their families, including delivery times and frequency. Are these services ongoing or do they have a specific life span? What are the important things to you as an organisation? What are your main organisational challenges? What support / training do you need to help you address these issues? This could include training, governance, and fundraising, to name a few.

With that in mind we would be very grateful if you could spend a few minutes completing our questionnaire. The findings from this survey will help us plan a programme of support for the CYP sector and to help us identify /seek additional funding and resources to support your needs. It will also give us valuable insight in generic issues facing the sector e.g. premises issues, training etc. If there are other things you would like to discuss, please feel free to email Janet Matthewson [email protected]

Please take the time to complete the survey in as much detail as you can - the more we know about your organisation, its delivery and its needs, the better we are able to support you.

Over the next five years Barnet Council will have to save £90 million to match the twin challenges of a falling income and growing numbers of young and older people using council services. This will mean that the council’s spending power will halve over the current decade. The council wants to hear your views on how it is prioritising council spending to meet these challenges. For more information on how to take part please visit http://engage.barnet.gov.uk.

During February and March the council will also be holding a series of consultations, below are some of the ongoing and upcoming public consultations. In addition to these, CommUNITY Barnet will also be hosting two face-to-face events in March (provisionally scheduled for 17 and 19 March) to discuss the council’s plans to 2020. More information on how to register will be published shortly.

Have your say on the future of Barnet's libraries

This consultation is open until 22 February 2015.

Community Asset Strategy: An Invitation to Stakeholders

Solace Women’s Aid Confidence Building Group for Women Affected by Domestic/Sexual Abuse

The Confident Woman - Six week group

This group provides some first steps on the road to recovery from domestic/sexual abuse. It will encourage women to look at ways of thinking about themselves that are positive rather than negative and self-defeating. It will challenge old and unhelpful ways of relating to self that have been fuelled by the domestic abuse or by emotional/physical abuse in earlier relationships.

It will focus on confidence building and growth of self-esteem, using a range of practical exercises and different ideas drawn from self-help techniques, cognitive behavioural therapy and other therapeutic ideas. It will provide a community space for women to get together, make friends and links with others for support and understanding on the issues around domestic/sexual abuse. It is possible to access this group while also in weekly counselling. A commitment needs to be made to attend all six sessions where possible.

How do I join a group?

The first step is to contact the counselling service by calling Tel: 0207 619 1360 or 07500 926 008 (open Monday – Friday from 9am to 5.00pm). We will be able to give you information on when the next group will be starting and arrange for a referral for you.

Lloyds Bank Foundation

The aim of this funding programme is to support projects that help people over the age of 17 who are experiencing multiple disadvantages at one of the critical points in their life.

The funding programmes are:

• "Invest" which is a flexible, long term core funding programme for charities helping disadvantaged people. Grants are up to £25,000 per year for two or three years, with the opportunity for continuation funding for up to six years in total.

• "Enable" which is a smaller and shorter grants programme for charities that have identified clear development needs. This funding aims to help the organisations deliver their mission more effectively. These grants are up to a total £15,000 over two years. The funding is available to registered charities and charitable incorporated organisations (CIOs) with an income of between £25,000 and £1 million.

To be eligible, organisations are expected to be working with people 17 years or older, experiencing multiple disadvantage at one of the critical points in their life. The only exceptions are young people who are under 17 years of age and young parents or looked after children and disabled young people moving into independent living.

There are no closing dates and applications can be submitted at any time. For more information please visit: http://www.lloydsbankfoundation.org.uk/our-programmes/

D D McPhail Charitable Settlement

The DD McPhail Charitable Settlement makes grants for voluntary organisations that support the elderly or young, and those that are disabled or sick. Most grants are for £2,000, with a small number of larger grants made. Each year about 15 small grants are made. Many of the granted organisations have an existing relationship with the trust, but new applications are welcome.

Applications can be made anytime. Please write to: Mrs Sheila Watson, The D D McPhail Charitable Settlement, PO Box 285, Pinner HA5 3FB

The Jephcott Charitable Trust

The trust makes grants towards project costs – with a preference for capital rather than running costs. Grants are made in the range of £2,000 to £10,000, and in exceptional cases only, up to £20,000. The diversity of appeals made to the Trustees make it difficult to provide specific guidelines in order to achieve selection. The trustees are flexible in their approach, and take the following into account when considering an application:

 Involvement with a third party (eg NGOs) Whether the project is basic or palliative  The financial situation of the organisation (85% of income should be directly applied to advancing the applicants’ charitable objectives)  Whether the project is one-off or ongoing  The extent to which organisations have helped themselves

Strengthening Faith Institutions Programme

The Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) has £400,000 to award to one organisation (a charity or an organisation with charitable purpose) or a consortium with the vision, capability and credibility to help strengthen and support faith institutions, increase their resilience and their capacity to face challenges. The funding covers the two-year period 2015/16 and 2016/17. Programme delivery should begin in June 2015. An annual review will be conducted on 1 April 2016. All funding after April 2016 will depend upon the results of the review. For the purposes of this programme, a faith institution is a place of worship: its leaders, trustees, staff and volunteers. The Strengthening Faith Institutions Programme is expected to contribute to three of the five key themes set out in the DCLG's 2012 paper Creating the Conditions for Integration:

 Common ground - a sense of shared aspirations and values, focusing on what we have in common  Participation and empowerment - people of all backgrounds have the opportunities to take part, be heard and take decisions in local and national life  Tackling intolerance - a robust response to threats, whether discrimination, extremism or disorder, that deepen division and increase tensions

Applications will be accepted from 30 January 2015 to 2 March 2015 (12noon)

Exploring intimate relationship experiences of Asian disabled women

This is a half day event to report on the research undertaken on Asian disabled women, their relationships and wellbeing. As well as hearing from some of the disabled women themselves, Public Health England and NHS England will be present to respond as to how the findings of the report can be used to influence the wellbeing agenda.

The Race Equality Foundation recently completed a small study exploring the intimate relationship (by this is meant relationships such as: marriage, civil or other partnerships, cohabitation) experiences of Asian disabled women. By using a combination of methods to gather views of Asian disabled women, this small study, will: (a) add to the knowledge base on the experiences of Asian disabled women in forming and maintaining intimate relationships and (b) help identify policy implications for service providers in relation to the wellbeing agenda and Asian disabled women.

There is not very much evidence on intimate relationships of disabled people in general and disabled women in particular and this is even more pronounced in relation to black and minority ethnic disabled women. We know however, that there is some evidence, particularly relating to the Government’s wellbeing agenda which suggests: social relationships, particularly those that are intimate in nature have a positive impact on wellbeing.

 Date: 18 March 2015  Time: 10.30am – 2pm  Venue: Race Equality Foundation, Unit 22 Deane House Studios, 27, Greenwood Place, London NW5 1LB
