Engaging Japanese Fans Building a Bridge between European Football and Japan For us at Ganassa, managing Social Media is not just a matter of translating an English feed into Japanese. The following pages feature some concrete examples of how we have created original content in order to connect European Football Clubs with their fans in Japan.

Twitter is a very powerful tool in Japan, with half of Internet users logged in. It is also the favorite social media among football fans. To launch the Japanese Twitter account of Real Betis in the summer of 2018, we created a video clip with the help of Real Betis TV crew: https://twitter.com/RealBetis_jp/status/ 1022789852729884674 The video focused on the presentation of at Real Betis, which took place a few days earlier. Upon publication, we pushed it in Japan through all possible means, including a retweet from Inui’s account, and several local media and influencers. As a result, the clip received over 215,000 views, almost 1,000 retweets and over 4,500 likes: in a matter of hours we had put Real Betis on the digital map in Japan.

In addition to posting the contents translated from the English or the club's local language account, we often customize tweets based on Japanese fans’ interest. For Real Betis, we published localized graphics before, during and after each match: https://twitter.com/RealBetis_jp/status/ 1073290452567232512 We added Japanese subtitles to the clips produced by clubs such as Juventus FC to reach the Japanese fans effectively. All the localized graphics create a sense of intimacy, and get very good engagement with Japanese fans.

With Real Betis, we created several short clips for Japanese holidays featuring some of the star players, to show the club’s respect for the Japanese fans and their culture.

Our clip for the New Year starring Takashi Inui and Marc Bartra saw 285,800 views, over 700 retweets and 5,700 likes: https://twitter.com/ RealBetis_jp/status/1079756659734532096

The tweet also received 32 comments, successfully generating interaction with Japanese fans.

Many fans were very grateful for the attention that Real Betis dedicated to the Japanese audience.

We have also published some special messages in Japanese before and after matches.

During our visit in Spain, we interviewed Real Betis Women’s Erina Yamane and SD Eibar Women’s Michi Goto, to create special video series for each club. The full interviews were cut into short segments and published as episodes on Japanese Twitter accounts. The aim of the series was to tell a story about each club and city from the perspective of a Japanese player, so that the Japanese audience can feel closer to the clubs. ©2020 Ganassa LLC, Tokyo Engaging with Fans on Twitter

In cooperation with the clubs, we regularly created contents to foster a special bond between the clubs and the Japanese fans, something that many European clubs have difficulties achieving. “Learn Spanish” video series with Real Betis, involving several players, each teaching a Spanish word to Japanese fans: https://twitter.com/ RealBetis_jp/status/1139729238712602625 We engaged Juventus supporters by asking them to show us their favorite uniform - we got an overwhelming 92 pictures as a reply! https:// twitter.com/juventusfcjp/status/ 1190221947524788225 SD Eibar’s MVP voted by Japanese fans on Twitter (weekly, sponsored by a Japanese company) : https:// twitter.com/sdeibar_jp/status/1104940003342245891

©2020 Ganassa LLC, Tokyo Celebrating and Mourning with the Japanese

Japan has many festivities, and we always try to celebrate them with originality, bridging Japanese culture with that of the club we work for. https://twitter.com/RealBetis_jp/status/ 1147671572918013956 https://twitter.com/ sdeibar_jp/status/1140091627962327045 https:// twitter.com/juventusfcjp/status/ 1121934490115293187 Unfortunately, natural disasters are a rather frequent occurrence in Japan. When they happen, we always send heartfelt words of support to the victims on behalf of the clubs we cooperate with. https://twitter.com/sdeibar_jp/ status/1037968645052358656

©2020 Ganassa LLC, Tokyo Tapping into Japanese Culture and Relating to Main Events

Japan has a rich tradition of popular culture which extends into the present era, for example with manga and anime. With the Betis account we have asked the Japanese fans to choose their favorite Pokemon among those sporting the club's colors. https://twitter.com/RealBetis_jp/status/ 1136633848970731526 We try to link with domestic football fans, by cheering for the Japanese national teams, but also with original initiatives, such as this one in which we re-disigned SD Eibar's emblem in the style of four popular J.League clubs. https://twitter.com/ sdeibar_jp/status/1104240393585999872 We also try to find ways to link to main event in Japan, such as the recent Rugby World Cup. https:// twitter.com/RealBetis_jp/status/ 1183364112425852933
