An alternative to fishing is the mari- culture. Cephalopods digestion is a two-part process: extracellular and intracellular. This paper describes the progress made in Octopus maya digestive physiology study, particular- ly, in the digestion temporality, absorption and assimilation of crab in an attempt to assess the nutrients dynamic and usage along the digestive tract and, how these are transported, stored and used as an energy source for growth. RESUMEN El pulpo rojo (Octopus maya) es un importante recurso pesquero en México, debido a su alto valor comercial y demanda interna y externa. Una alternativa a la pesca es la mari- cultura. La digestión de los cefalópodos es un proceso de dos partes: extracelular e intra- celular. El presente trabajo describe los progresos realizados en el estudio de la fisiología digestiva de Octopus maya, en particular la temporalidad de la digestión, la absorción y asimilación de carne de cangrejo, en un intento por evaluar la dinámica de nutrientes y el paso a lo largo del tracto digestivo y, cómo éstos son transportados, almacenados y utiliza- dos como fuente de energía para el crecimiento. INTRODUCTION Red octopus (Octopus maya) is an important fishery resource in Mexico. Therefore, it confronts a great catch strain and in recent years has showed an inconsistent production. An alternative to fishing is the mariculture. This species has great advantages for cultivation. However, reliance on nat- ural diets and the lack of a specific and economical feed have slowed the pro- duction development of this and other cephalopods at commercial scale round the world. They advance acuity, bandwidth, and categorization power as possible components. It is first necessary to realize that sensory richness does not automatically lead to perceptual richness and this capacity may not be accessed by consciousness. Octopuses do not discriminate light wavelength frequency (color) but rather its plane of polarization, a dimension that we do not understand. Their eyes are laterally placed on the head, leading to monocular vision and head movements that give a sequential rather than simultaneous view of items, possibly consciously planned. Details of control of the rich sensorimotor system of the arms, with 3/5 of the neurons of the nervous system, may normally not be accessed to the brain and thus to consciousness. The chromatophore-based skin appearance system is likely open loop, and not available to the octopus’ vision. Conversely, in a laboratory situation that is not ecologically valid for the octopus, learning about shapes and extents of visual figures was extensive and flexible, likely consciously planned. Similarly, octopuses’ local place in and navigation around space can be guided by light polarization plane and visual landmark location and is learned and monitored. The complex array of chemical cues delivered by water and on surfaces does not fit neatly into the components above and has barely been tested but might easily be described as perceptually rich.

We investigated the relationship between body size and thermal energy, resource and habitat availability and depth ranges. Both latitude and depth range had a significant effect on maximum body size in each of the major cephalopod groups (cuttlefishes, squids and octopuses). We observed significant negative associations between sea surface temperature (SST) and body size. No consistent relationships between body size and either net primary productivity (NPP), habitat extent (shelf area) or environmental varia- tion (range of SST and NPP) were found.

E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT. The phylogenic relationships among the Octopus species have not been fully established. We compared sequences for three mitochondrial genes (16S ribosomal RNA, cytochrome oxydase I, and cytochrome oxydase III) from Octopus maya, an endemic taxon of the Yucatan Peninsula, with homologous sequences from other taxa within the Octopus genus, with the aim of elucidating the phylogenetic relationships of this species. Maximum likelihood trees grouped O. maya with octopuses that inhabit the East Pacific. Considering that the distribution of O. maya is limited to the Yucatan peninsula in the West Atlantic and that the sequences analyzed show equal evolutionary rates across taxa, we propose that the divergence of O. maya possibly started during the formation of the Panama Isthmus, when the Pacific and Atlantic basins were split. The genetic distances that O. maya sequences show within the trees obtained are in the range of congeneric distances of other taxa in this genus so that these sequences are characters that support the inclusion of O. maya within the genus Octopus.     Cephalopod Senescence and Parasitology 16 Katina Roumbedakis and Ángel Guerra Abstract In the majority of the shallow-water cephalopod species, senescence is a short stage of their lifespan, which takes place at the end of sexual maturity. Senescence is not a disease, although senescent cephalopods can be frequently mistaken with diseased animals. Senescence is accompanied by physiological, immunological and behavioural changes, which are briefly exposed in this chapter. A suppressed immune system may increase susceptibility to parasite infection in senescent cephalopods. High prevalence of infection by Aggregata octopiana was observed in Octopus vulgaris and Aggregata sp. in Octopus maya. In both cases, the infection was found in post-spawned females and was infecting different organs. Cestode larvae Prochristianella sp. were found in the buccal mass of post-spawned O. maya females.
