While waiting at a bus stop, Rosa and Daniel were hit and killed by a tow truck driver who plowed onto the sidewalk and through a crowd of people. Th e six children, in the wake of their tremendous loss, went to live with their aunt and uncle. Out of this tragedy, an amazing story of generosity has grown. Although the children’s uncle Ricardo was already supporting his wife and their three young children, he welcomed his six nieces and nephews into his one-bedroom home without hesitation. Upon referral by a social worker, the family went to Th e Alliance for Children’s Rights for help obtaining legal guardianship of the children. Th e Alliance turned to Manatt for pro bono assistance on the case. Th e circumstances required a substantial amount of eff ort and expertise, which Manatt partner Brad Seiling was happy to provide. Although Brad had no prior experience with guardianships, after attending a brief training, he successfully navigated a new area of law. Th ough his legal role is done, Brad continues to monitor the family’s situation and remains invested in their well-being. Brad says that working with the family was “one of the most rewarding things [he’s] done in almost 17 years of practice.” Brad and Gene Elerding also worked with the Vernon Police Department to put together a fund to assist the family. Brad recalls being struck by the strong sense of family and their ability to pull together in the face of such a diffi cult experience. Ricardo told him that this is what his (and Rosa’s) mother had taught them: that you help family and take care of them. As a young man with a family of his own, Ricardo’s willingness to take on the responsibility of his six nieces and nephews was “awe-inspiring” to Brad, who was also impressed by the ways the older children helped to care for the younger ones. In discussing the case, Brad shared some of his thoughts and feelings. “What draws me to these pro bono cases is the opportunity to help families stay together in diffi cult times. Th e case was particularly tragic—a horrible car accident that killed the kids’ mother and stepfather. It is heartening to see how these guardians are willing to step up and assume responsibility for entire families in addition to the large families that they already are raising. Meeting the families is always a rewarding experience. You can see how the kids and their guardians have drawn close together to deal with the children’s loss and adjustment to an entirely new life, new home and new schools.

THE PSALMS’ GREATEST HITS 7) Wonder Psalm 8 / Palm 19: 1-6 Rev. Ron Dunn August 28, 2016 Over the past six weeks, we have considered some of the Psalms’ greatest hits as we have touched upon the themes of God’s absence and presence, upon our need for confession and grace, upon the importance of trust and joy. Not only have we considered the written texts of various Psalms that speak to the basic reality of our human condition, but we have paired them with the selected musical expressions of Bono, Van Morrison, the Pretenders, Leonard Cohen and Farrell. From a preaching standpoint, it has been fun to think about the linkage that many of these contemporary songs have with these ancient texts. Though they may express themselves with different words, the hunger and the hope that lies behind them is often much the same. This morning, our series concludes on an appropriate note—the note of wonder. I say, “appropriate,” because, if you look closely, you will find that the thread of wonder is woven throughout the tapestry of the entire Book of Psalms. Even in Psalms of lament and despair, we often discover that there is, at least, a passing reference to the Psalmist’s sense of wonder over the beauty and goodness of God. Even the pain and suffering of the current struggle cannot keep the writer from affirming his or her sense of wonder over the greatness of God and God’s creation. Our two selected Psalms of the morning, however, are not Psalms of lament, but just the opposite.

First Dance, F/D Dance, etc) FOUR WEEKS prior to your event so that we can confirm the band will be able to perform the song(s) and so that we have time to locate sheet music and audio of the song(s). In some cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is needed, this gives us time to properly prepare the music. Clients are not obligated to submit a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and/or avoided. If you desire the highest degree of control (asking the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we would ask for a minimum 80 requests from the band’s songlist. 1 INTRODUCTION The end of the Cold War radically realigned global politics and led to a renewed interest in transnational civil society. The new civil society that helped bring down the Soviet Empire has been considered a major enabling element for worldwide democratization. Simultaneously, social movements addressing issues such as the environment and human rights globalized and increased their prominence within civil society. Leading such movements were inter-governmental organizations (IGOs), like the United Nations, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), like Amnesty International and Greenpeace. Collectively known as international organizations (IOs), the reorganized worldwide society created an atmosphere where such IOs could proliferate and flourish, and become a significant factor in the post-Cold War world. While IGOs are quite powerful, NGOs have achieved a dramatic impact working as non-state players in international society. Current scholars of international relations have begun to consider the implications of traditionally non-political actors advocating political and social causes. However, much of that work has focused on NGOs and their interactions with each other, the governments of nation-states and IGOs. Keck and Sikkink (1998) evaluate the prominence of NGOs and the transnational networks that such organizations form to frame issue debates and establish them on agendas of international concern. However, another important piece of the puzzle for NGOs to successfully promote a political or social agenda is the role played by individual non- state actors, and not just non-state organizations. Non-state actors often have a unique ability to impact an audience that may not be affected by NGOs, especially when these 2 non-state individuals are celebrities.

Are We Not New Wave? Modern Pop at the Turn of the 1980s Theo Cateforis http://www.press.umich.edu/titleDetailDesc.do?id=152565 The University of Michigan Press, 2011 Q&A with Theo Cateforis, author of Are We Not New Wave? Modern Pop at the Turn of the 1980s New wave emerged at the turn of the 1980s as a pop music movement cast in the image of punk rock's sneering demeanor, yet rendered more accessible and sophisticated. Artists such as the Cars, Devo, the Talking Heads, and the Human League leapt into the Top 40 with a novel sound that broke with the staid rock clichés of the 1970s and pointed the way to a more modern pop style. In Are We Not New Wave? Theo Cateforis provides the first musical and cultural history of the new wave movement, charting its rise out of mid- 1970s punk to its ubiquitous early 1980s MTV presence and downfall in the mid-1980s. The book also explores the meanings behind the music's distinctive traits—its characteristic whiteness and nervousness; its playful irony, electronic melodies, and crossover experimentations. Cateforis traces new wave's modern sensibilities back to the space-age consumer culture of the late 1950s/early 1960s. Theo Cateforis is Assistant Professor of Music History and Cultures in the Fine Arts Department at Syracuse University. His research is in the areas of American Music, Popular Music Studies, and Twentieth-Century Art Music. He was editor of the anthology The Rock History Reader. The University of Michigan Press: What were the forces that led to the rise of new wave? Theo Cateforis: New wave initially circulated as a synonym for the punk rock movement that emerged in the mid-1970s.

Sacrificial Nationalism in Henrik Ibsen's the Pretenders

SACRIFICIAL NATIONALISM IN HENRIK IBSEN'S THE PRETENDERS William Mishler University of Minnesota Even during his lifetime, the ambiguity essential to Henrik Ibsen's dramatic method gave rise to considerable interpretive debate. In the near century since his death new approaches to his work have steadily continued to arise in accord with the changes in critical and literary theory. We have had, writes Charles Lyons in a recent survey, Ibsen "the realist, the icono- clast, the successful or failed idealist, the poet, the psychologist, the romantic, the antiromantic" (4). The extraordinary "hermeneutic generativity" evinced by Ibsen's plays cannot be attributed, in my view, solely to their aesthetic excellence or to changes in critical fashion, but as much or even more to the fact that they touch in a prescient way on conundrums inherent in modern life that are both fundamental and particularly intractable. In The Pretenders, for example, Ibsen composed an artistic meditation on the nature of nationalism which, seen from today's vantage point, can be called prophetic. The question the work implicitly poses might be formulated as follows: Is it possible for modern people to create a nation-state on a basis other than the threat of reciprocal violence? In other words, can a modern state attain to a condition of peace that would amount to something other that the mere stasis of fear? And if the answers to this question is negative—the work clearly asks—what will prevent the modern nation-state, which lacks the safeguards and restraints formerly supplied by various institutions of transcendent authority, from falling into desperate conditions? These are questions that are easy, even unavoidable, to pose today when we witness with horror the fires ignited by nationalism around the world.
