Johnston Fire Chief Jim Krohse said he expects it will be another seven to 10 days before he knows the cause of death for a man found in a house destroyed by fire on Sept. 26.

Lloyd Kennedy’s body was discovered by firefighters under debris from the second floor of the house. Preliminary autopsy reports showed no injuries beyond those that were fire-related, Krohse said. The Polk County medical examiner is awaiting results from toxicology and other tests.

Investigators have confirmed the use of gasoline in the home at 8412 Sandford Place. Krohse said two gasoline containers were found, one burned and one intact with gasoline residue inside.

He said there was no evidence to indicate anyone had broken into the home. Damage to a door neighbors reported as being “bulged out from the inside” the night of the fire showed no signs of prying or damage from a vehicle, he said. Kennedy owned the home along with his wife, Lingyu Zhang. She was on a business trip to China at the time of the fire, while a daughter, Julie Zhang, was away at college.

Council approves health, fitness facility

Metro families and residents will have another option when it comes to health and fitness in Urbandale.

The City Council at its meeting Tuesday unanimously approved a site plan that would allow construction of an approximately 88,000-square-foot, two-story, full-service health and fitness facility off Interstate Highway 35/80 at the intersection of 111th Street and Douglas Avenue.

Life Time Fitness, a Minnesota-based company, has 78 clubs in 19 states across the country. The Urbandale location will be the first in Iowa.

The building, to be located on roughly 18acres, will include an indoor and outdoor pool with outdoor water slide, a salon, a cafe and a children's activity center.

David Tam, development manager for Life Time Fitness, said the building is designed to handle between 7,500 and 9,000 members, and expects to serve 2,500 to 3,000 members daily.

He said the health and fitness club will employ 250 part- and full-time employees.
