I would like to thank you very much for your support, patience and understanding. I would like to acknowledge the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (IAMZ) and the University of Lleida (UDL) to enable me to pursue this MSc study. I would like to thank the staff of the Basque Center for Climate Change (BC3) and the department of Civil Engineering: Hydraulics and Engineering, Technical University of Madrid (UPM) for their help, kindness, caring, and providing me with an excellent atmosphere for doing research. Most importantly, none of this could happen without my family. Thank you all. Last, but not least, I thank my friends in Palestine, Basque Country, Syria, Turkey and Columbia for their support and encouragement. III Abstract The relationship between water and climate is a significant one. Climate change is likely to have major effects on water resources. A large part of the world’s freshwater resources is contained in river basins. As climate change is expected to affect the river flows and water demands, an early understanding of its potential impacts and possible adaptation pathways becomes more essential especially when neighboring countries share water resources. The Spanish part of the Tagus River Basin is chosen as the case study. The purpose of this study is to assess the impacts of climate change on water availability in the Tagus river basin and on the longstanding trans-boundary water agreement between Spain and Portugal. The study adopts a hydrological and water allocation modelling approach. This approach depends on creating a river basin model using the WEAP tool. The performance of the basin is evaluated under the current baseline (1940 – 1996), and under the potential climatic conditions according to the A2 emission scenario in the short term (2025), mid- term (2055) and long term (2085). The results show that the basin is sensitive to climate change, and the performance of the basin would change significantly in the long term. The study area currently tends to experience water scarcity problems especially in the agricultural demand sites. Under climate change the water deficit in the basin would increase and the reliability of satisfying the agreed minimum flow to Portugal would decrease. The performance of the basin is more sensitive to the agricultural than to the urban water demand. Reducing the agricultural water demand by adopting several measures could significantly decrease the impacts of climate change. Indeed, a reduction of only 20-30% in the agricultural water demand could significantly reduce the impacts of climate change. The importance of human images in the development of Iberian megalithic art supports an evolution of these contents toward pieces with engraved weapons which dating back to the 3rd millennium cal BC. From the analysis of the evidences reported by the whole geographical sector, this paper is also aimed at determining if the graphic resources used in these stelae express any kind of identity. Visible stelae in barrows and chambers from the 3rd millennium cal BC would be the images around which sepulchral areas were progressively added, thus constituting true ancestral references throughout the Bronze Age. Folia Zool. – 57(4): 420–434 (2008) Age, growth and diet of the Iberian loach, Cobitis paludica in two different environments Ramona SÁNCHEZ-CARMONA*, Lourdes ENCINA, Amadora RODRÍGUEZ-RUÍZ and Victoria RODRIGUEZ- SÁNCHEZ Department of Plant Biology and Ecology, Faculty of Biology, University of Seville, Apdo. 1095, 41080 Seville, Spain; *e-mail: [email protected] Received 24 April 2007; Accepted 10 June 2008 Abstract. Several aspects of growth and feeding of C. paludica have been assessed in two different environments: a lenitic and a lotic hydrosystem, Portil lagoon and Rivera de Cala river respectively. Growth patterns showed some differences with Iberian loach growing slower in the lagoon than in the river. Because of this, although individuals of both populations reach sexual maturity in their second year (year-class 1+), specimens of lagoon population mature at smaller sizes. The C. paludica population in the river showed a better somatic condition than in the lagoon. In both hydrosystems, their diet was mainly chironomid larvae and ostracods, although the Portil lagoon Iberian loach population showed a clear trophic segregation between young of the year (year-class 0+) and sexually matures individuals (year-class ≥ 1+). Key words: Cobitis paludica, lenitic hydrosystem, feeding strategies, biological parameters Introduction The Iberian loach, Cobitis paludica (De Buen, 1930), is an endemic Iberian species which belongs to Cobitidae family. The range of this species covers central and southern rivers of the Iberian Peninsula, and has also been found in several places of Duero basin (Doadrio et al. 1988, Velasco et al. 1992). The Iberian loach is currently undergoing a pronounced decline and has become extinct from several water courses basins in the last decade.

ABSTRACT The network of the Alberche and Guadarrama rivers, obtained by a semicuantitative method, shows that on the granitic and metamorphic rocks of the Spanish Central Sys tem exist circular alignments, until now detected by analysis of satellite image. Such alignments are located in the sub-geological system of the Sierra de Guadarrama, and they coexist with to already known rectilinear alignments. In the sub-westem system, Sierra de Gredos, are detected rectilinear alignments. The circular structures of Sierra de Guadarrama would have a relationship to geological processes still unknown after the Hercynian Orogeny but before of the Oligocene. Key words: River networks, circular alignments, spanish Central System.

Lencart-Silva Application of the United States National Estuarine Eutrophication Assessment to the Minho, Lima, Douro, Ria de Aveiro, Mondego, Tagus, Sado, Mira, Ria Formosa and Guadiana systems ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Acknowledgements The data required for this study exist for many Portuguese estuaries and coastal lagoons. However, data producers often do not make this information widely available; as a result, very limited datasets are sometimes extrapolated to describe the pressures and state of a particular system. INAG, the Portuguese Water Institute, has strongly endorsed open standards in access to water quality data, and has promoted many initiatives which help Portugal have a modern outlook on the relevance of public data dissemination. We thank INAG for the opportunity which this work has given us to play a part in information sharing in estuarine research. Our sincere thanks go to all the scientific community, which contributed data and information for this study. In particular, we must mention those who greatly improved the substance of this work, providing advice, suggesting interpretations, and critically reviewing the text: they played a key consultancy role in the development of the NEEA approach to Portuguese estuaries. Suzanne Bricker, from the Special Projects Office, National Ocean Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, coordinator of the NEEA study carried out for 138 estuaries in the United States. Suzanne was an enthusiastic supporter throughout, and supplied us with much good advice on methodological issues. She worked with us both in Portugal and in the U.S.
